Back in 1958-ish when stereo was introduced to the masses I wandered into one of the new "stereo salons" to see what was up. Before that it was about radio-phonographs and the old Magnavox. So I went in there and I was alone in the store with the proprietor. I was 14. He proceeded to take me to his demo area and blow me away with my first exposure to stereo sound on some AR2's (I think). But he was really a big JBL fan...and this was back when JBL was a stand-alone company and Lansing was still involved and alive. After I was "sold" on the wonderfulness of stereo he started teaching me about how to build a system. He said...buy the best speakers you can, first, then upgrade the source and the amp as you can...the very same conclusion that Steve says he has lately come to. That advice has worked for me for the intervening 64 years.

Great interview, Steve has been involved in audio for a long time. It was his review of Infinity IL10 that made me take the time to go listen and I bought them and soon after bought the matching center and IL 50s for my mains. I have always offered advice especially to younger people on listening to good quality sound. It made me smile when they would come back to me and say I didn't know music could sound like that.

A most enjoyable video. I am a big fan of Steve, I love his style and his philosophy of reviewing products at low price ranges as well as the higher priced stuff. I agree that it helps to bring in new people to become audiophiles as many people love music but can't afford the pricey stuff. I personally have been a lifetime DIYer starting out as a 13 year old kid building kits not only because they were all I could afford but also to learn about electronics and sound. I have taken the technical route and and have worked in such places as NYC recording studios, the CBS Technology Center, a submarine, and places in the Nevada desert that I can't talk about what I did. But I have been interested in audio engineering my whole life and am especially interested in acoustics and psychoacoustics (how we perceive sound). One thing I have learned about that is that we humans have a very short audio memory, and because of that when we are comparing sounds of anything, the comparison should be done immediately and repeatedly, which increases the sensitivity or acuity if you prefer to any differences, allowing a better comprehension of the differences and increasing the confidence in the judgement of the change. To listen for a lengthy time and then changing the setup to something different and then listening again can only give a general sense of any differences or possibly influence the judgement based on knowledge of what equipment is being heard. Therefore I do not put as much faith as I would like to in the descriptions and opinions of what reviewers say about their experiences. It is unfortunate because it is not that difficult to do a proper A/B test even double blind by comparing the left and right channels of a stereo system with a mono source while the devices being compared are in opposite channels. I would like to see someone take this on and see how much more information can be conveyed and even video the testing.

Great interview indeed. Many thanks to you and Steve for all your hard work in enlightening my personal audiophile journey. Kudos to Steve for contributing to my self-determination as an audiophile which I am since my youth. I had the blessing of father who pampered early my ears with Bang & Olufsen turntable, amplifier and speakers. Now I understand even more why I am chasing great sound and recordings to better enjoy the music I love. My point here is that thanks to Steve, I realised who important is the quality of the recording for an audiophile. I am earring about Dolby Atmos music recording for an improve multidimensional sound not only for the movies but also for the music. This is for me the futur and we should emphasize on getting to the multidimensional level of both recording but also the restitution of the music. More new audio sources are being built with binaural/aural capacity. In my audiophile journey, I am currently amazed by oni-directional speakers such as Bang & Olufsen speakers (even if they are active speakers) and Ohm speakers (which are passive speakers if I am not mistaken). This type of speakers provide, I am told, the most precise stereo imaging over the widest sweet-sweep from any other speakers. Your advice will be fondly appreciated. Many thanks again.

I was surprised you were one of the first. Hopefully more to come! Steve has so many stories that I think her should do a whole interview or episode on nothing but stories related to selling hifi, working at chesky records. I think steve would be able to capture a audience even if it wasn't hifi related lol. Keep reaching out to new and exciting folks to interview! I can attest that cables do make a difference. Including thicker speaker cable. Nearing the end of the interview as I write this, I'm hoping he can discuss cd's and the hoopla around them. I still have my cd collection (as Steve does too). I wonder if he condones them? Or, does he hold on to them for other reasons?. I like the point he made about getting into streaming for the international exposure to musicians. That never crossed my mind. I have yet to cross that line into serious streaming, but his perspective about "discovery" really convinces me to open up to the idea.

hi both, thanks for this interview.
Steve, if I may, I guess you're even more a musicphiliac as a stricktly audio one, hearing you talking about how your friend was recording with miques 6 feet high..
And this is what makes it interesting listening to your experience with the gears....
I must confess, expecting the last day's judgement on a specific one from your side , isn't the thing to do...
But hearing your feel for the one and the other....especially speakers, gives some intersting orientations.
So, I would have a question , to both you Steve , and Jay who I heard is fund of drums : for cumbia from the area of Fuente's reccordings, which speakers ?
What leads me to a next question : Steve, what about an interview around the world of shirts design ?
Or maybe, let's say shirts cloth print design ?
I guess you have a pretty handfull of musical matches there..
Thanks for being around Guys !!!!

There's no reason to argue about whether cables or speaker wire matter. This can be *objectively* tested. But don't "listen and decide for yourself" w/o adding controls otherwise placebo can trick you.

I hate the term "!entry level". My love of music and audio led me to study electronics at degree level. The snobbery around the the term means I will never call myself an "audiophile"; for me, loving music means more than merely consuming commercial products.

Steve, may we know how old you are? One time, you showed your photo when you were in your twenties. You do look like those people in "Grease" movie!
