Thank you so much, this video totally helped me out cleaning mine to the bone. It did not smell but after six years I found it pretty much clogged with fine dust. Now it performs as if new! While following the steps in your video I found some things I believe not mentioned in the video. But please comment if I'm wrong, I only wish to contribute. - The six screws in the center are T10. The one on the back is T8. - Be sure to thoroughly clean the valve inside of the nozzle which is directly connected to the container. An unclean valve results into lower performance than possible. - It is not a big deal if the electronic connectors on the container and the sockets in the front of the nozzle get wet while cleaning. But it is of great importance to dry them thoroughly as soon as you have finished cleaning. This prevents the connectors from rust which in turn could result into connectivity problems with powered accessories. Use a clean dry cloth to dry the connectors on the container thoroughly. Apply a hair dryer or a hot air gun at max 140K/60°C for a couple of minutes straight in front of the sockets in the front of the nozzle to get all the wetness out. If you go beyond 140K/60°C, things will hardly go faster and your Dyson might start melting... So why is this not a big deal? :-) The two electronic connectors on the container connect through a black/white wire to two small sockets in the front of the nozzle. Powered accessories are provided with power through these sockets in the nozzle. Meaning that there is no more than an extension wire involved, so no vulnerable electronic parts like chips. - The nozzle on the container can be detached as well. But I advise only to do so if you are a bit of orderly and patient/experienced as a really, really thin rubber gasket is involved (easy to break, easy to loose) and putting back the wires (not connectors) in the right place can be a bit of tricky. And with mine, this part was actually the least dirty. So if you're still willing to do so LOL: inside of the nozzle, next to the valve, you will find two T10's. Remove those. One side of the nozzle will now be loose. From the perspective of the container, that is the right side of the nozzle. From the same perspective, to detach the left side of the nozzle: use a thin but not very sharp object like a table knife to pry very carefully in a vertical manner between the container and the nozzle and it will set loose. When reattaching after cleaning, make sure that the cable is in the right place meaning it will neither get stuck between the nozzle and the container nor will be perforated when putting back the T10's.

The instructions Dyson provided of just cleaning that big main filter was useless. Thanks for the video. I've had a DC35 that I bought new God only knows how many years ago. It quit working a couple years ago so it ended up in my closet with other stuff. I was about to throw it away but I then decided to buy a new battery from Amazon to see if it would work again. I bought the battery and it worked temporarily. It worked until the battery lost its charge. I put it on the charger overnight but it was still dead. I thought I received a bad battery so I ordered another battery. Same thing, nothing would happen. I then decided to buy a new charger and BINGO! That was the trick. I then took it apart with your video's help and now my DC35 is like brand new again. I'm happy!
I have the same problem also a dyson dc35 and now the thing does not charge. So i dont know if it is my battery or is it the charger? I ordered a new battery that will arrive tomorrow. But maybe it is the charger? The charger does not give any light. Do u maybe know the problem?

That's so much for this! I have one small modification for anyone with a DC34 version - around the 5:20 mark, you pop the drive assembly out with a screwdriver. This won't work on the DC34 model because of a protective sheath surrounding the drive assembly. I found that I could pop it out using a tool I made from a thicker gauge paperclip. I unfolded the clip, and bent the tip of it 90 degrees, at about 1 or 1.5 mm in from the end, creating a very small hook. I could then reach into the space between the sheath and the backstop of the drive assembly and pull it out. Hopefully this helps anyone in a similar situation. Your video gave me the inspiration on how to remove this part, so big thanks!
Good job man best video on properly cleaning here. The rest are only skimping round the edges and havent a clue how to clean properly. Brilliant demonstration

@@theresaandrus5409 There are a few contacts on those batteries. If they contacts are corroded at all it might do what you're describing. Aside from replacing it that's the only other solution I can think of.
Thanks for the video! Got a new Dyson, and decided to use the old one in the garage. It smelled like dog and dirt after a while out there. Works better now, and doesn't smell like my dog rolled in mud! He smells like that, but my vaccuum shouldn't!

Awesome. Truly appreciate it, I still have my DC44 and I use it daily, and have been doing my own maintenance and work on it. Changed the roller before, as well as new filters, but this is a much better option to clean 🧼 my upstairs vacuum. I could NOT get the filter for to open. All I had to do was squeeze the parts together as I released the clip. Great tip! This time I also washed the plastic cyclone innards. I couldn’t get those three clips undone, but you showing what is inside helped me decide just to wash it as one big piece. Thanks! PayPal sent.
Thank you so much! I’ve had my vacuum for 10+ years but as time has passed it has shut off more and more. I have been rinsing most of it aside from the motor so it was extremely helpful to get it taken apart properly. Although it is clean, unfortunately I continue to have the shut off issue. I see a screw to the motor portion but not brave enough to get that apart.
If your DC35 won't turn on, try flipping the filter the other way around! Mine would not go even tho i was sure the battery was charged. I cleaned all the contacts i could get at on the battery, up inside the handle, behind the dust can and going out to the attachments, but no luck. I was hoping this vid would show me how to open up the power head, because i thought it was corroded up in there. But then i noticed the little "faucet" icons printed on his filter were upside down as he took the filter out. So i flipped mine around and put it together and it worked. Mine only works with the purple side facing out, and the faucet icons upside down. Looking at the rubber gasket around it, i cannot see how the top is different than the bottom, but for some reason it matters. There is a little purple tab on each end that has to push against a rubber-covered switch at the bottom of the power head. This happens when the dust can is properly latched in place, but apparently one end of the filter gasket is too squishy and doesn't cause the switch to contact. Or maybe the tolerances are not great and it varies from filter to filter. Afterward, i realized that i could have tested this by just pressing that switch and pulling the trigger while the battery was in, but the dust bin was off. Presumably this is defeating a safety feature, but all its gonna do is blow a little dust in your face, so YOLO. Also, i noticed that the "MAX" light only comes on while the trigger is pulled. I thought it should come on whenever the MAX button was pressed, which was another reason i thought i had issues up in the power head, but apparently that's not how it works. As soon as i flipped the filter so that the faucet icons were upside down, my trusty old DC35 was fully back in business!

I have the DC35 and I've done what I thought was a good deep cleaning before, but I didn't know I could go further than the last step on the cyclone assembly with the T8 screws. That part is so hard to clean. I had my flashlight and pipe cleaners and an old drinking straw cleaning brush and I couldn't get it all clean. Thank you for showing me how to go further on the cyclone assembly. Mine doesn't smell, but I'm sure there's more dirt trapped in there. My battery is worn out so I am trying to find a good replacement even though generic batteries worry me, but I bought a used OEM Dyson battery and it's life is about as short as my original OEM Dyson battery. I have been trying to figure out if my issue is the batteries or the motor dying. I'm hoping just the batteries are the issue.
My experience with replacement batteries has been good by in large. I wouldn't worry too much about that. And sounds like battery is your problem so go for it!
Great guide! On mine the little flap which keeps nozzle closed while it is vertical (i.e. hanging in the wall charger) was stuck open. The nozzle is held on the transparent bucket by 2 more T8 screws (on one side) and clips on the other side. You have to pry it up with quite a bit of force to release the clips. I cleaned the flap mechanism from both sides with a shower jet until the dust stuck in the mechanism was released. Should be no problem getting the cables and contacts wet as long as they can dry quickly afterwards. Blow out the water from the contacts with compressed air ideally.
Great video - really helped - I took mine apart (DC25) - after I took the brush out, I noticed debris in the inlet tube - turned out it was jammed packed - that was a real surprise - put it back together and it works great now. By the way, I left off the the little plastic piece in front of the roller and it actually picks up larger stuff now - like cat food - how cool is that - but it makes me wonder - is there a soft roller head for an old model like mine? If not, maybe I could modify the one that I have?
Great video and helpful but for the one thing I need: the gasket on the cyclone that seals the clear bucket needs replacing and nobody mentions that part anywhere 😢

Thank you for the informative video. I was trying to research a way to get into the meat of the meat and potatoes part of the Dyson vacuum being the motor assembly because it has a watchdog type filter inside the unit. I was looking for a way to gain access access to the motor without destroying the motor assembly in order to service the filter and clean out any unwanted dust and debris that's gathered up on the motor blades. I'll check to see if you have a how to clean the motor assembly of a Dyson vacuum? thanks again
Very useful video, thanks. I've just been given one and have given it the 1000 mile service . Full of dirt and crap. I noticed a flap in the collector box where the nozzle plugs in had a lot of dirt and fluff jammed in it. I undid two torx screws inside but can't seem to get it apart to properly clean it and I didn''t see it mentioned in your great video. Any ideas please? It looks like it pulls apart but I don't want to break it trying.
I believe there are some internal clips that also keep it together. I’ve tried to take apart but I felt I would risk breaking it with the force necessary to free the clips.

Your video better than Dyson Tech Chat, actually they were worthless. Still problem with DC31, charger "flashes" green when plugging in but won't turn solid to charge. Is it charger, battery or motor? Pretty clean, no build up on roller or filter or machine head. Suggestions?
Hello, do you know where i can find a spare motorised floor tool for the DC44 version? Later versions have a plastic insert in the middle of the pin socket that prevents me from inserting them into the vacuum cleaner.... Thanks!
Any hints on where to find the o-ring for the cyclone assembly? When I got to the step of using a flathead screwdriver to pop the tabs, the oring/gasket snapped. The only thing I can seem to find online is full replacement of the cyclone unit. I just need to gasket/oring. (around 2:30 mark)
Yep, I'm in Los Angeles. If you find one that would be amazing. I was able to get it back in place with a couple dots of Superglue and it seems to be working, but s replacement would be awesome.
Hi Tom, followed you instructions on the clean for the DC 44. Is there another filter near the max button. Cleaner is still pulsing when I use the mac power after a pull apart clean. Any suggestions?
hold the machine with both hands on each end (dirt up/cyclone end) and motor end and press hard inwardly (pinching the two sections together closer) and then hit the latch. should release it
Doesn’t always mean anything. Dyson handhelds have some sort of sensor that does not send voltage out if there is no head connected. I’ve tested this way and not found it to be conclusive. I keep spare working heads and motors etc for testing.
I have a serious question.....I have bought a used Dyson or two....what are the odds in your business of a dirty vac coming in for service that has flees or even worse bed bugs in it and how to you prevent from taking them home? Yes I am serious. I just bought a back up stick vac today for $40!!! But I wont let it in the house until I do a thorough cleaning.
It’s never happened to me in 13 years in the business. That is not to say it is impossible but based on my experience it’s not a huge concern. However I’m not taking any of my repairs home with me so I understand your hesitancy. If I were you I would certainly tear it down and deep clean it before it comes in my house. Thanks for asking.
if you don't want to disassemble the whole top part, just submerge it in some water with laundry detergent, flush it out with water and let it dry. I can imagine the plastic wearing out if you'd take it apart every time you want to clean it.

I’ve heard similar testimonies of this type of service. Buy local! 😊 at least at my shop I’m not interrogating my customers if they have a problem however there are certainly instances where I have had to use discernment so as to not be taken advantage of. I do understand the difficulty in trying to solve a problem over the phone. It’s very difficult and almost always requires the person bringing the vacuum in so we can get eyes and hands on it to better understand the problem. Dyson kind of did this to themselves in how they treated us local repair guys. I quit doing their warranty work because I was being treated so poorly by them. I was a doormat.

Or maybe the tolerances are not great and it varies from filter to filter. Afterward, i realized that i could have tested this by just pressing that switch and pulling the trigger while the battery was in, but the dust bin was off. Presumably this is defeating a safety feature, but all its gonna do is blow a little dust in your face, so YOLO. Also, i noticed that the "MAX" light only comes on while the trigger is pulled. I thought it should come on whenever the MAX button was pressed, which was another reason i thought i had issues up in the power head, but apparently that's not how it works. As soon as i flipped the filter so that the faucet icons were upside down, my trusty old DC35 was fully back in business!
I bet you’re correct in your suspicion (the part of the filter is squishy so it’s not activating the safety switch)

I have the DC35 and I've done what I thought was a good deep cleaning before, but I didn't know I could go further than the last step on the cyclone assembly with the T8 screws. That part is so hard to clean. I had my flashlight and pipe cleaners and an old drinking straw cleaning brush and I couldn't get it all clean. Thank you for showing me how to go further on the cyclone assembly. Mine doesn't smell, but I'm sure there's more dirt trapped in there. My battery is worn out so I am trying to find a good replacement even though generic batteries worry me, but I bought a used OEM Dyson battery and it's life is about as short as my original OEM Dyson battery. I have been trying to figure out if my issue is the batteries or the motor dying. I'm hoping just the batteries are the issue.
My experience with replacement batteries has been good by in large. I wouldn't worry too much about that. And sounds like battery is your problem so go for it!

Great guide! On mine the little flap which keeps nozzle closed while it is vertical (i.e. hanging in the wall charger) was stuck open. The nozzle is held on the transparent bucket by 2 more T8 screws (on one side) and clips on the other side. You have to pry it up with quite a bit of force to release the clips. I cleaned the flap mechanism from both sides with a shower jet until the dust stuck in the mechanism was released. Should be no problem getting the cables and contacts wet as long as they can dry quickly afterwards. Blow out the water from the contacts with compressed air ideally.
I have the same problem, have undone the two screw but unsure what I need to pry to get at the flap to to clean it.

Great video - really helped - I took mine apart (DC25) - after I took the brush out, I noticed debris in the inlet tube - turned out it was jammed packed - that was a real surprise - put it back together and it works great now. By the way, I left off the the little plastic piece in front of the roller and it actually picks up larger stuff now - like cat food - how cool is that - but it makes me wonder - is there a soft roller head for an old model like mine? If not, maybe I could modify the one that I have?

I’m sorry but I don’t know of how you could get another one. That’s an uncommon problem so I’ve not had to replace one of those before.

Thank you for the informative video. I was trying to research a way to get into the meat of the meat and potatoes part of the Dyson vacuum being the motor assembly because it has a watchdog type filter inside the unit. I was looking for a way to gain access access to the motor without destroying the motor assembly in order to service the filter and clean out any unwanted dust and debris that's gathered up on the motor blades. I'll check to see if you have a how to clean the motor assembly of a Dyson vacuum? thanks again

Very useful video, thanks. I've just been given one and have given it the 1000 mile service . Full of dirt and crap. I noticed a flap in the collector box where the nozzle plugs in had a lot of dirt and fluff jammed in it. I undid two torx screws inside but can't seem to get it apart to properly clean it and I didn''t see it mentioned in your great video. Any ideas please? It looks like it pulls apart but I don't want to break it trying.
I believe there are some internal clips that also keep it together. I’ve tried to take apart but I felt I would risk breaking it with the force necessary to free the clips.

Your video better than Dyson Tech Chat, actually they were worthless. Still problem with DC31, charger "flashes" green when plugging in but won't turn solid to charge. Is it charger, battery or motor? Pretty clean, no build up on roller or filter or machine head. Suggestions?

Any hints on where to find the o-ring for the cyclone assembly? When I got to the step of using a flathead screwdriver to pop the tabs, the oring/gasket snapped. The only thing I can seem to find online is full replacement of the cyclone unit. I just need to gasket/oring. (around 2:30 mark)

Yep, I'm in Los Angeles. If you find one that would be amazing. I was able to get it back in place with a couple dots of Superglue and it seems to be working, but s replacement would be awesome.

Hi Tom, followed you instructions on the clean for the DC 44. Is there another filter near the max button. Cleaner is still pulsing when I use the mac power after a pull apart clean. Any suggestions?
Check your intake on the clear bin. That flapper can get stuck. Also check nozzle for any partial blockages.
Is there any other way I can get the end cap off the hoover brush head part? as the slit for the screw driver to go in has rounded off!
Usually a bigger screwdriver helps!

hold the machine with both hands on each end (dirt up/cyclone end) and motor end and press hard inwardly (pinching the two sections together closer) and then hit the latch. should release it
I'm getting zero volts at the floorhead contacts on the main unit.
Doesn’t always mean anything. Dyson handhelds have some sort of sensor that does not send voltage out if there is no head connected. I’ve tested this way and not found it to be conclusive. I keep spare working heads and motors etc for testing.

The battery is old, but it works in normal mode and only cuts out when you press max mode. I can’t see it being the battery.

I have a serious question.....I have bought a used Dyson or two....what are the odds in your business of a dirty vac coming in for service that has flees or even worse bed bugs in it and how to you prevent from taking them home? Yes I am serious. I just bought a back up stick vac today for $40!!! But I wont let it in the house until I do a thorough cleaning.
It’s never happened to me in 13 years in the business. That is not to say it is impossible but based on my experience it’s not a huge concern. However I’m not taking any of my repairs home with me so I understand your hesitancy. If I were you I would certainly tear it down and deep clean it before it comes in my house. Thanks for asking.

Why does every video on the Dyson 35 total ignore how to clean the POST MOTOR FILTER?
Because it's not a filter! It's a diffuser. It diffuses the exhaust air so it's not as powerful of a stream of air flow.
if you don't want to disassemble the whole top part, just submerge it in some water with laundry detergent, flush it out with water and let it dry. I can imagine the plastic wearing out if you'd take it apart every time you want to clean it.

I’ve heard similar testimonies of this type of service. Buy local! 😊 at least at my shop I’m not interrogating my customers if they have a problem however there are certainly instances where I have had to use discernment so as to not be taken advantage of. I do understand the difficulty in trying to solve a problem over the phone. It’s very difficult and almost always requires the person bringing the vacuum in so we can get eyes and hands on it to better understand the problem. Dyson kind of did this to themselves in how they treated us local repair guys. I quit doing their warranty work because I was being treated so poorly by them. I was a doormat.
