Thanks for the upload, i tried this with 6 seedlings whilst away for 3 weeks ,all survived, stunted growth but all healthy ,for, larger plants use 2 or 3 thin ropes into 1 pot, fill the bucket with water 3/4 way up and use a clothes peg to clip the twine to the bucket to secure, then put at least 3 inches submerged in water, run it to the plant pot and bury 2 inches in the soil,it work's great.
Are you sure ? When I set these up my plants seem to always drink the water in my jars the same level that the wick ends inside my plants ... I just don't want to end up over watering on accident .
All of these commenters saying to put the water source above the soil line apparently never been to the Lowes planting section where they have wicking trays full of water with plants placed on TOP of the trays.
The first example is a mess!! Water WILL GO UP into the pots but only if the rope is in a tube otherwise it will just drip water at the ropes lowest point on the table and on your electrical outlet :))
Would this work for plants like Bromeliad or Orchid or the Easter or Christmas cactus (The Easter and Christmas cactus is not succulent) and would it work for succulent plants as well?
A cup of water equals a week? Bruh this dude doesn’t know shit. I use wicks to water my plants when I’m away I have about 100 plants on my terrace, out of those 50 are connected to the wicks. I have a huge 100 gallon water container and that goes for about 1.5 - 2 weeks in the heat of summer. Also if the water container is higher than the plants you will get a quicker feed.
FYI Water don't run or drip UP hill Water container need to be about the plants rope need to be wet able for water run down or dip down to the house plant
the rope doesnt work by dripping it works by capillary action, its not that the water is running up the rope is that the water is soaking up through the rope and then into the soil, you can see this in effect easily by getting a piece of tissue paper and dipping one end in water, after awhile if not immediately youll see the water shoot up it (not sure if this is what you meant but just incase it would be useful)
Self watering - What is the point if it only last about a week? Most house plant can live without water for 1.5 week without water. Most of the time when i go away for about a week i just water them before i leave. I need a technique that can last over 1 month😅

Use a plastic wrap to cover the water jar so that mosquito doesn't lay eggs on it and water doesn't evaporate quickly into the dry air.
You have mosquitos I your house?
The top of the water holder needs to be above the dirt level, not below it.

Isn't it more efficient?
Hi, is there any specific type of string that will work?
Nylon
Jute?
Nice vedio i really enjoyed
We should place bowl higher than pots in first exp
No. If you do that it'll water too much.
@@apieceoftoast710 at what level would you suggest please. I'm new to water wicking. 😊
The top of the water container needs to be ABOVE the plant pot...
Water will wick upwards.
does it have to be rope? can you cut up pieces of cotton cloths (Ex an old pillow case)?
I tried and my strips were too wide I think and dried out

Water is best placed above the soil line.
It is capillarity, not gravity.

Nice hacks
thanks a lot
Genius 🤯
Been around for decades
Those pencil shavings don’t have lead?
Pencils aren’t made with lead anymore they’re completely non toxic

I guess this will never work unless the water is put higher than the pots
For a week? I never water any of my plants that often
The bowl of water needs to be higher then the strings
Capillary action

FYI, you are a *****. Capillary action as already stated. If the water is above the plants, it will overwater them eventually. Science.
The rope size would drown that plant….yarn would be better size.
Interesting how you "flew over" (for plants that need watered this way). Does NOT work for all plants.
Get rid of the word HACK
WO!!! Rachel has put on some weight!

Use the same technique, just use a bigger container of water 💧
