Great video. I actually enjoy watering my plants. On Sundays, I put on some classical or jazz records and make a pot of tea. Then I start going through my home watering and tending to over 200 houseplants in my studio apartment. Don't judge!!! Some people drink . . . some people do drugs . . . I do junglmania! Lol. I end up so relaxed and zenned out by the time I am done. I have a lovely collection of African Violets and ferns. Living in

I discovered the 2 liter thing when I was propogating a ton of basil once. I did not use the wick / cloth, but that's a very good next step in my process. This is the best plant channel on youtube. Thank you.

Is there a difference between the function of the reservoir and the quick systems? Does one keep the substrate wetter than the other? Do different plants do better in a given system? Heh, I just realized you could make a whole video on those questions! This was very informative. Thank you! 💚
Its really cool! Now I am doing it for all my home plants. I updated it even with strew which stayed in the pot and wooden stick which helps me to check the level of water in the pot:)

I do have a question/request: can you show/teach us how to get your vining plants like that marvelous Hoya that you have climbing a ring and eventually forming a wreath? The one you showed at the end that's been in your home, how do you know when the plant has exhausted all the water in the reservoir/how do you know when to add water?
Thank you for a detailed "video on the "self watering system". It is very helpful to plan and repot our plants. Can we trim the water roots if they out grow? What kind of fertilizers are suitable for a self watering system plants? On the average how many days we don't have to water the plants? Does the Nylon robe becomes mouldy and clog so water can't be absorbed ? Which type of robe/wick is long lasting?

When you're using selfwatering pots (the one at the end in the video) do u use a dry-out period before filling the reservoir? Especially for calathea's?

Hi. Good video thank you I finally got to understand how this system works and why I see so many self watering systems around, not knowing which one to pick. Since now I see they all work I’ll keep the one started to adapt to my pots already which is using a small Dixie cup with holes in it, but no rock, just soil touching the water. My question for you is: is this system good for all plants, even those not needing water that often- will they just take what they need sort to say, or is it good just for plants that require daily watering? Also, is this method good for seed planting or just for plants.thanks for your help I’m just starting my veggie garden and since I’m not very good at watering my plants regularly I’m trying to find something that will work for me. I appreciate your help

My question is a little bit off topic, but is about watering, soil and oxygen content of the soil, and I wonder about the health of the plant.
So, I want to try out a new potting soil mix, it says 1 part coco peat + 1/2 part vermiculite + 1 part worm casting or other similar organic material.
I usually tend to over water my plants by using potting soil which is too heavy in organic material and soak it really good and let the water drain out, it takes quite a few weeks to dry out.
My question is, would the above mentioned new potting mix good to solve my issue?
Also from what I'm understanding coco peat even if moist it is fluffy and it would contain some amount of oxygen
+ the vermiculite which is pours would keep some oxygen.
I am just a beginner, and you have helped me avoid some mistakes I would have made had I not watched your very interesting video. Thank you.
Another alternative would be to put the plant into a net pot or a plastic flower pot with drainage holes at the bottom. Thread a nylon rope or a shoelace through the holes and then add your soil medium. Then put the net pot or plastic flower pot into a slightly bigger outer pot that can be a glass or plastic container. Fill the bottom of the outer pot with water making sure that the water level is below the drainage holes. In this way, you save on buying pumice. In my country, pumice is very expensive.
Yes you can do this also with acrylic string or a paper towel 😎
Hi guys, love your channel!! I have a question… I have just planted my pothos in self watering pot with a wick like you showed in the video in the end…Now 4-5 days are gone but my substrate is still very wet … I was wondering if I have done something wrong …do I have to put leca or Pomice on the top of wick then put plant or I can put directly on the wick? Will my plant would survive like this or am I over watering it ? Waiting for your answer …. TIA

Can self-watering systems be used for succulents and cacti? I stress out the most about watering those and have killed many many many of such plants... =(
I live in Arizona and have tons of cacti and succulents. I wouldn’t do this method for those plants. I give my succulents 4 Tablespoons if water per plant, per month. Cacti gets 2 Tablespoons. This is based on a 4” plant. Add 1 tablespoon per inch of plant height. I know it doesn’t seem like “enough water” but it really is. Hope this helps

Do you recommend microfiber or cotton cloth? I would think that microfiber would retain the moisture and not allow for easy capillary action.
So to get the water in the bottom you have a 2 container system either were you take out inner pot or find something with a tube that leads to the bottom with water lvl bobbers . Or do your glass jar system . I got a bucket with just the soil /water seperator insert . Sorry I am new . How do i get the water to the bottom ? or is my set up like the glass jar already . Just water and the excess will drain away ? Or should I find a water tube and bobber still ?Or just toss the insert and do your glass jar set up ?
I love your informative videos -thank you! I made a self-watering pot (using the empty plastic water bottle and fabric strip), at first it was very successful and my Prayer Plant cutting began to thrive but then after a few months there was fungus gnats in the soil, I guess if the soil stays perpetually moist it will attract and become a breeding ground for fungus gnats. Did you encounter such a problem with self-watering systems? Do you have any advice for prevention? Thanks again.
Drosera (sundews) are very easy carnivorous plants that have an especially high affinity for attracting and wiping out fungus knats. They are great natural pest control. They have a few special requirements for the soil and water that is used in their care (nutrient free soil and distilled or rain water), but they are very easy to care for when kept in the proper conditions.
