Love "Sugar." Great line up, widely available, and cheap.

Yessir, I love that era of Return to Forever/Chick in the early '70s, Chick's playing touched a lot of different smooth records at that time.

I own the excellent Return To Forever, Stan Getz and Stanley Turrentine albums on vinyl. I haven't listened to the RTF or Getz albums in years. Sugar is on my car's mp3 song list so I hear that song every time the song list replays.

If you can check out Stan Getz - Live At Montreux (1972), same band that did the Captain Marvel album.

Thanks for the heads up about that Max Roach album Kenny. I remember listening to him and Abbey Lincoln on "We Insist", but haven't listened to much after that. Listening now ...
Favorite "Third Stream" Jazz -Classic fusion album, "Bill Evans Trio with Symphony Orchestra", followed by the first track on the Evans-Ogerman collaboration "Symbiosis". But if I really dig deep into the history, I guess the greatest "fusion" artist would have been Scott Joplin, bringing "ragged time" to European harmonies and melodies.
I have the Captain Marvel album on CD, but will have to listen again.
It was at 5:39 I got goosebumps. The title track alone of that first RTF album is one of my touchstones in GREAT jazz. Those first two acoustic albums of RTF are among my favorites, and I guess "Where Have I Known You Before" is my favorite of his electric line-ups.
Sugar, I don't have, but remember the title ... so I must have heard it in the past. Another favorite album featuring Turrentine is the '71 CTI album, "Gilberto with Turrentine", a favorite piece being their cover of Edu Lobo's "Ponteio" with that haunting harmonica of Toots Thielemans. Astrud can be annoyingly too "sweet" for my taste on some albums, but she floats like a butterfly over this hard-driving line-up.
Cheers from a near midnight in Japan.

Hey Kenny…Thanks for the reviews. I’m going to have to check out that Stan Getz album with that incredible pre RTF lineup. Also, his album Focus as you talk so highly about it and I’ve not heard it. As far as Sugar is concerned, you’re absolutely correct. It’s one of my favorite CTI recordings and I forgot to list it as one in my comments to you on your CTI opinion a couple video’s ago. I was fortunate enough to see Stanley play live at Yoshi’s in Oakland shortly before his passing. Thanks Kenny

Love that era of Stanley Turrentine on CTI, he was always Soulful and Funky going back to those Blue Note recordings. Storm is one of my CTI favs. Musicians like Stanley Turrentine represent the link between Jazz and Funk (R&B). From this style of playing, you get the Maceo Parkers (James Brown/The JBs).

I have one record that blends jazz/classical that came to mind as I just listened to it the other day. It is Jacques Loussier Trio Play Bach 5 on the London record label. Well worth checking out if the blend of genres is your thing.

when i hear music with instruments, i always prefer to listen to the guitar but recently, i'm very intrested to hear the drums ! i love drums and percussions in general ! I never heard max roach's music, i heard the name before so i'm very looking foward to discover his music. when you mentionned the names of the line-up of the stan getz album which is an album that i didn't know, i automatically thought of return to forever ! thank you very much kenny !😄

Kenny, two albums I would add for this discussion. First is The Last Concert by The Modern Jazz Quartet, an amazing group that created a "classical chamber music" approach to jazz with a great group of musicians led by Milt Jackson. The second is Freddie Hubbard's First Light album with CTI. I think Freddie was under appreciated for being such a marvelous trumpeter, and this album has a stellar collection of musicians, too. His Red Clay album on CTI was excellent as well, but I liked First Light more. You can listen to that one all day!

Last night, the "Jazz Bums" were touting the Stan Getz "Sweet Rain" album as one of his best. 🙂

Thanks Kenny! I don't have an audiophile setup and just listening on my old Triad speakers but that track by Turrentine sounds exceptional!

Sometimes I forget what I have in my LP collection, but "Captain Marvel" did get a lot of spin time on my turntable in the 70's...Had no idea Stanley Turrentine, and Shirley Scott were married.( Goes to show you learn something new everyday)...I would've thought she'd be married to Eddie"Lockjaw" Davis for all the collaborations they did together...Please do a video on great Sax, and Hammond B3 Organ combinations..It doesn't get any more Soulful, Bluesy ,and Jazzier than those 2 instruments in perfect harmony.

Captain Marvel is great, and it's also wonderful that they filmed the incarnation of the bands material at the Montreux Jazz festival in 1972. And speaking CTI records another gem is the Joe Farrell Quartet featuring John McLaughlin and Chick Corea. Joe Farrell was also in the earliest ensembles of RTF.

Out of these 3 albums, the (Captain Marvel) and the (Max Survivors) album appealed to me the most. It was probably because I prefer, a more faster approach to playing instruments when it comes to jazz music? That's not with every jazz album. The playing can be suttle as long as it takes me somewhere. Actually, the (Survivors) album kind of reminded me of Akira Ishikawa (Count Buffaloes Drums) album a little.
