Live at Slugs is fantastic from start to finish, and the best release of 2024. IMO

Kind of sad but that's where Lee Morgan was shot and killed. He took a slug at Slugs. That album is something else Kenny, great stuff.

Another great review !!! I was super excited seeing Hang On Ramsey !!! This is one of my favorite eras of the trio. Ramsey was always Funky and Soulful. You can hear traces of "The In Crowd" sound on the prior "At Bohemian Taverns" album. "Barefoot Sunday Blues" and "Bach To Blues" are great, too. Joe Henderson and Mccoy Tyner at Slugs has to be the significant find since the Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall. Mccoy Tyner is one of the finest !!!! Tyner along with Randy Weston and Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) incorporated African rhythms into Jazz.

@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews Appreciate your channel !!! There was a great wealth of piano jazz trios !!! Oscar Peterson Trio, Les McCann Ltd, The Three Sounds, Red Garland trio, and Quartet recordings on Prestige Records. My head is swimming now. BTW Ramsey Lewis' version of Since You Been Gone (Aretha Franklin) Maurice White was kicking up the Funk on that one !!!

Another great review Ken, Ramsey Lewis The In Crowd live. Bought it new in 1965, and still got it spinning...

Interesting that Ramsey Lewis's "The In Crowd" won the Grammy for Instrumental Live Performance in 1966 and the other album your viewer mentioned, Cannonball Adderley's "Mercy Mercy Mercy," won the same award the next year. Those were the days when jazzy instrumentals could actually become hit singles. The cover of the latter says it was "Recorded Live at 'The Club'" -- which was really Capitol Studios in Hollywood (the famous round building, like a stack of records) with an invited audience and an open bar for the occasion. There is a similar upbeat vibe on both records, though. As there is on Young-Holt Unlimited's irresistible (and once ubiquitous) 1966 hit, "Soulful Strut." I'm waiting for 21st Century music fans to rediscover Young-Holt Unlimited! I got back into them when I heard "Soulful Strut" used in the 2015 Tom Hardy gangster movie "Legend," about the notorious Kray brothers. (P.S. That Ramsey Lewis "Maiden Voyage" record also has versions of Bob Dylan's "Mighty Quinn" and the Beatles' "Lady Madonna." There were not so many boundaries between genres in those days!)

I've been listening to the Ramsey Lewis Maiden voyage album and it's very nice. Thank you for your comments about Cannonball Adderley and Ramsey Lewis 🙏 👏 👍

Mccoy Tyner, Joe Henderson Live at Slugs is indeed a great performance, I agree with you, Kenny. If I had to name a great live jazz album, I suppose it would be Electric Masada - At the Mountains of Madness. It was recorded in 2004. I also enjoyed Anthony Braxton live at the Iridium 2006. This was back when Mr. Braxton was in his Ghost Trance Music phase.
Thank you for this presentation, and here's to a happy, productive and great listening New Year.

Thanks Kenny! I picked up the ‘in crowd’ my 1st Ramsey Lewis vinyl last year and later found ‘back to Bach’ for 5 bucks at an antique mall- both are terrific albums!

I like the Live At Slugs album great performances by everyone. I don't care about the sound, it was 1966 so it's what I expected. I'm just glad there was a tape of it. I never had a chance to go Slugs , I was to young but they made big headlines in 1972 because that was were Lee Morgan was killed.

It's sad what happened to Lee Morgan 😞...The performances on the Live At Slugs album are great, I'm glad that you are able to overlook the occasional sound issues.

Hey Kenny...a first time commenter here...love your enthusiastic encyclopedic music knowledge...I first heard of the venue 'Slugs', when the melodic trumpeter Lee Morgan was murdered there...I inherited the Ramsey Lewis Trio live album from my father...speaking of Maurice White, I highly recommend his autobiography titled Maurice White: My Life with EW&F...it details his time with the Ramsey Lewis Trio and meticulously decribes his formation of the great verstile EW&F band...since I am a Blue Note label fan, I know that the McCoy Tyner/Joe Henderson collaboration Live at Slugs is one that I must find and add to my collection...again great review by you Kenny!!!

Thanks for reviewing each album, especially "Forces of Nature" b/c I've been reluctant to purchase. The In-crowd, as you probably already know, is a tune made popular by both Lewis and Dobie Gray. Gray's version was arranged by the late great music/Motown/Wall of sound arranger, Mr. Gene Page, and his partner, the maestro himself, Barry White. Page would go on to make music magic with White on most of Barry's biggest hits throughout the 70's. Again, I'm sure you know this being the repository of music that you are.
Also of note, Birmingham Bassest, Cleve Eaton would later join Ramsey Lewis for many of Lewis's early 70's hits before leaving to join the Count Basie Orchestra where he stayed for many years. Each of these greats made a huge impact on me and countless others during that magical time of discovery during our youth. Again, thanks for the review!!!!

Kenny…You are truly a man of the people, spreading love and making dreams come true. 🙏 Thank you for reviewing Ramsey Lewis’ epic “The Inn Crowd” live album. I’ve always dug that soulful set on LP and can picture being in the house that early Summer evening in DC when it was recorded. I read many years ago that a restaurant waitress recommended to Ramsey that they cover the song “The Inn Crowd” which was a big hit by Dobie Gray back then just days before this recording. Thank you also for mentioning Maurice White’s presence in the band. I particularly enjoy that Wade in the Water album with White on drums. I was unaware of the Young and Holt partnership and will need to check that album out.
You didn’t have Maurice Lucas Blazers jersey on to complete my ultimate dream sequence but at least you didn’t have his later Lakers jersey on!! That would’ve nightmarish and far too much for this old Jazz cat to handle 😳😵‍💫 You are the man Kenny! Really enjoying your Jazz audiophile Master class channel.

Hi, Agree on the sound issues. I even would give the sound a 5 to 6, not more. This is definitely an archival recording, interesting and involving. I also noticed piano and bass are far away, but mostly, sound presentation is so ''flat'', I was disappointed as far as sound is concerned. Probably digital corrections and sound treatments thaey had to do, flattened and killed the sound quality. J from Paris, France.

I liked the (Forces of Nature) out of the two, being that it's fast, pace, and that's not me saying I don't like slower jazz grooves. I think the (Forces of Nature) album is an 8.5 while the Ramsey Lewis Trio album is a 7.5 in my opinion.👍
