  • When @Makita Tools USA launched their 12V cordless ratchet, it took about 5 minutes for everyone to ask when we'd get the 18V. Low and behold, it's here, we have the Makita XRW01 18V Cordless Ratchet and we put it through some testing. You can get the Makita 18-volt cordless ratchet as a bare tool (XRW01Z) for $159, or you can get the kit (XRW01T) with one 2Ah battery and charger for just $229. Makita includes a 3-year warranty on the 18V ratchets. You get a brushed
    motor and variable speed trigger that controls the 0-800 RPM and 35 ft-lbs of torque. Just like the 12V cordless ratchet, you can switch between the 1/4" and 3/8" anvil within seconds.

    I could be wrong but I think these ratchets are designed for you to manually break the nut by cranking the handle then using the trigger to run the nut off. Same for tightening.

    Gday Tim,
    This was exactly the review I’ve been looking for! You answered all the questions I had. I’ve always enjoyed the quality of my Makita corded tools and I’m about to upgrade my early Dewalt cordless 1/4” impact to a Makita 18v ratchet. (I’m also investing in the Makita 40v 3/4” impact so I’ve got the larger stuff we’ll covered to.) But I need a ratchet for the smaller stuff in tight spots and mainly after the time saving nut runner aspect of it. I expect to help it to break most nuts loose, then run it off. I mainly work on skidsteers such as Cats and Bobcats and they have a lot of 10-14mm fasteners. I believe the latest model out now is the DWR180Z. Great review with practical information. Thanks for taking the time to make and post this vid. Much appreciated,
    Cheers 🍻

    I just got one of these and it works great. The press release says it has 35 ft. lbs. of tightening torque. Doesn't say it will break something tightened to 35 ft. lbs. Don't know if that makes a difference. The only reason I'd use the 1/4" drive anvil (if I don't lose it first) is if using a 3/8" to 1/4" adapter would take up too much space. I bought the kit since I wanted the small battery and it cost the same as buying the bare tool and a battery. The charger it comes with is the slow charger but I have so many of the fast chargers it doesn't really matter. If I wasn't on the Makita LXT platform I probably would have gone with the Milwaukee but I'm still happy with it.

      The newer fuel M12 Milwaukee ratchet is slightly more powerful (rated at 55lbs) but the ratchet head is huge! Their older model was way smaller and was more usable for me. I work on compact cars so I can barely fit it anywhere. I actually regret buying the newer Milwaukee ratchet because of the size issue.

    • @pflaffik
      @pflaffik 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@lfgamble3924 Thats not true for ratchets, they can tighten but not loosen. Part of the explanation is the momentum, the nut/bolt is rotating fast and comes to a sudden stop, its a mild impact. Starting from zero rpm they cant tighten more than they can loosen.

      I bought a Makpak 2 and will get some universal foam used in tool suitcases to cut out space for the 18v Makita ratchet, extra 2ah battery and the extra anvil, plus some bit adapters and whatever. The barebone Makpaks are cheap but beware that they seem to be of lower quality than cases included with expensive Makita kits, i had to remove some plastic to make the locks of the universal Makpak go smoothly but yet firm, can use a rouch sandpaper and make sure to not remove too much plastic.

    just curious. Friends mechanic told him to return hie 3/8 drive milwaukee and get the 1/4 drive. Said it was more versatile due to the much smaller head. The 12 volt milwaukee also is more compact due to battery configuration. Makes sense to me. As a carpenter I use different brand tools for different reasons. Battery tools might confuse that. When I cut I look AT the blade.Grew up on a skill worm drive. Makita let's me see the blade on their rt handed saw. I can't make the same cut either a milwaukee or Dewalt saw. Milwaukee used to make the best recip saw. That went out the window years ago. 12volt milwaukee tools are little beasts! To me milwaukee cordless sanders, jig saws don't measure up to the Makitas? Go figure. Newer 36 volt left hand saw is a great saw! Thanks for listening.

The battery on the back is critisized by some but i doubt those people used it in real life, because in real life its the only ratchet that holds up ergonomically.
      I respect Milwaukeee, some batteries fall off so its definitely not up there with Makita quality wise but overall they are great, i know shops thgat do heavy duty work on trucks who use Milwaukee exclusively and they have very few issues, but only Makitas are proven to last a lifetime, its Japan vs China, Makita manmufactures in China but under their own rules. I know Chinese people who told me stories about Chinese mentality and i agree with them; China is best at manufacturing but ONLY when the mother company abroad is doing the QC. • @christopherenoch4230
      @christopherenoch4230 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "nega"? Do you mean negative? I left nothing negative, just a suggestion to help a wider audience. I bought it just so I can weigh it. I don't trust the manufacturers for their specs.
      I do like it, it feels small in the hand... I've been using it more than my M12 high speed ratchet.
      Thanks

    You went from a 18V 2.0Ah Battery to a 18V 5.0Ah Battery expecting more power?
    That's like having a V8 engine with a 15 gallon gas tank and swapping it out for a 25 gallon gas tank and expecting more power. Amp Hour (Ah) is a measurement of how much Capacity a battery has smaller batts have smaller Ah# larger batts have larger Ah#

      Correct, we mentioned in the first video that this ratchet is brushless, but it is Not brushless. So, we had to reshoot a scene and do some more editing. We re-uploaded the fixed video and pulled the wrong info down. Thanks for watching.

      My problem is the M12 is too bulky. The grip, with a thick battery inside, its terror, would not use an M12 for any extended time.

    Glad I saw your video because as a professional, I wouldn't buy this Makita ratchet. It's a overpriced nut runner. If they can't make a cordless ratchet that break at least 35 ft lbs, no point in owning one. If you have to use it like a manual ratchet, save your money. Keep up the good video reviews.

    • @TKettle
      @TKettle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't have to use it like a manual ratchet. It easily has enough power even for rusty threads. If you use manual ratchets a lot, it will speed up your life. I had to tear apart the front end of my car and never touched my manual ratchets. Just this thing and an impact wrench for the stubborn ones.
      I thought he covered that fairly well with the nyloc nuts, but I suppose if you don't understand the difference, yeah you don't need one.

      I like Makita but lately their tools seem to be leaving me wondering what the hell were they thinking when they designed some of them. Like this ratchet. It’s forward reverse selector is really awkward and the torque is really lacking especially if you want to use it as a 3/8” ratchet.
