    "Gandalf is not a essential character in the movie"... with that statement, you negated any credibility to anything you say about the movie or books... Gandalf is the reason the story exists... if he hadn't told Bilbo to go on the quest to Erebor with the dwarves, Bilbo wouldn't have found the ring...

    • @yogidemis8513
      @yogidemis8513 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      If Smaug never sacked Erebor then none of it would have ever happened, no Gandolf going to Bilbos, no adventure for Bilbo and definitely no ring. Or I could say if the dwarves weren't so greedy hoarding all that gold to attract the dragon in the first place none of it would have taken place. (Just saying)

    Sorry what? He's literally the character that both initiated the entire story with Bilbo and who drives the war for middle earth side of the story forward by being guidance for Aragorn, Legoland, Gimli, Merry and Pippin forward.
    I swear there must be somebody who is actually interested in at least the film's who you could get to write the script rather than somebody who has no idea what they are saying, to the extent where they look like Shaun Connery at the first reading of The Fellowship of the Ring.

    From the opposite side, things which die-hard Tolkien fans were the only ones to even know about:
    Merry and Pippin's swords weren't given to them by Aragorn; they were obtained from a burial mound (barrow) and the swords were magical, especially designed to fight against dark powers such as the ringwraiths. The ringwraiths were invulnerable to ordinary weapons, but a single blow from one of the magic weapons was enough to make a ringwraith temporarily vulnerable to a blow from an ordinary weapon.
    Which explains what happened with Eowyn and the Witch King.

    While on a tour of Wellington in New Zealand, our guide, who worked on LOTR, told us a story.
    When shooting scenes in Wellington, viggo mortensen liked to stay in character the whole time. One particular night Viggo decided to running around the streets of wellington in costume, swinging his sword and yelling. Concerned civilians nearby looked at him and called the police saying there was a mad man running around the streets swinging a sword. Police arrived and asked Viggo to put the sword down and he replied with "Do you know who I am? I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn!" The police then arrested Viggo and took him to the police station.
    The next morning the Peter Jackson and producers went to the police station and explained Viggo's method acting, so they set him free.
    Till this day at Wellington Police Station there is a plaque saying "Do You Know I am? I am Aragorn, Son of Arathorn! - Viggo Mortensen"

    This is the first time I heard that Tolkien thought that Sam was the true hero of the story. I've always thought this. He was thought of as fat, silly and timid, yet he was the only one other than Bilbo(questionably) who used the one ring and resisted. Even Gandalf was afraid of it. Sam willingly gave it back to Frodo without being prompted. The only other person who did that was Tom. I believe Tolkien put Tom in the story to parallel how powerful Sam's will was.

    You know the scene of Aragon fighting the five Nazguls was filmed as the first scene Viggo had to play? As you mentioned they had problemes with the casting of Aragon, so Viggo entered the set in the last minute. He needed a crash curs in sword fighting, cause he should fight five Nazguls and should look like a profi. On the other hand all four Hobbit-Actors had sword fight lessons since one month, so they really knew much of tricks - however had to play the weak Hobbits.

This is either an example of very bad writing or is some sort of inside joke between Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Peter Jackson (the screenwriters). Ummm... Tolkien got tired of people saying that Sam was the real hero and touting Frodo as weak and ridiculous. The story was Frodo's and it reflected Tolkien's own mental struggles after WWI. He also said himself that Frodo was the only one strong enough to carry the ring to Mt. Doom. Not even Sam would have been strong enough in the end. He also stated that if Sam hadn't been so cruel to Gollum, Gollum would have grabbed the ring and jumped into the lava himself to spare Frodo from living the life he had. So really, it circled around the three and the choices all three made. Frodo was incredibly strong, able to resist the ring for so long. Sure, he gave in a couple of times but those flaws were what made him relatable. The thing with people is that they can't look past his flaws because they want him to be perfect. Tolkien was trying to create a character that anyone with a history of trauma could understand and relate to.
    How many die hard fans knew THAT?

And, nobody would have died, there would have been no wars. Bilbo would stay with the elves. Frodo & Sam could have lived happily ever after in Bilbo’s house, and adopt all the unwanted goblin babies a gay hobbit couple could ever want! And, I wouldn’t be sitting here at 6:30a.m. just starting “Return Of The King”, because when I watch the series, I can’t just watch one and lest it at that! LOTR is certainly a great movie, but it still is extremely flawed. Jackson paid way too much attention to battle scenes and not enough to character-establishing scenes because they didn't have enough action for him.
    Gandalf is basically the impetus for Bilbo's adventures with the dwarves. If Bilbo hadn't gone on those adventures he never would have gotten the ring and...well. So Gandalf is pretty much the most important character in both The Hobbit and LOTR.
