@@maxhowlett9661 I love how they mentioned that they thought it was a guitar at first and were curious about the effect he was using only to realize it's a bass once they counted the strings :D
Bass is supposed to be rhythm. Not lead. It’s why I like Steve Harris and David Ellfeson better. Cliff is more talented, but the other two mentioned played the instruments the way they are supposed to be played.
You are missing what makes this version so special. Cliff did things with a bass guitar that had not been done in metal or any other genre. He played it like a lead guitar and had he lived Metallica would have been a very different band.
Cliffs hands man lol The way he could bend those bass strings like they were normal guitar strings lol The man could crush a rock with his bare hands and makes diamonds.
From what I understand, he actually would use strings from more than one set of strings, so he'd get a thicker set for the top two strings and a thinner set for the bottom two to make it easier to bend them. I'm not sure if that's 100% true but I think I remember hearing it somewhere. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong
Magic Steve actually, although at that stage in their career he played an Explorer it was not a signature model. His more famous guitar is in fact his ESP ‘Snakebite’ which is similar to an explorer but made in South Korea.

What soon came to be his main one was a white 1984 Gibson Explorer decorated with a sticker on it reading “So What”. This guitar was originally equipped with Gibson Dirty Fingers pickups (496R/500T ), but sometime in the late 80s - presumably around 1987 when Kirk Hammett switched to EMGs as well - James took the pickups out and replaced them with the EMG 81/60 set. Knowing that, and the fact that this was James’ favorite guitar at the time, the album Ride the Lightning (1984) was largely recorded using this particular guitar equipped with the stock Gibson pickups. EMGs didn’t come into play until the EP: Garage Days Re-revisited (1987) and …And Justice for All (1988). Just like his Electra Flying V, James restored his white Explorer and played it on “Death Magnetic” in 2008.”
I'm kind of jealous. You get to hear Fade to Black and The Unforgiven and Four Horsemen and Enter Sandman and Seek and Destroy and so many other amazing songs for the first time. Enjoy.
David Webb, agreed. The first song I ever heard from metallica was battery, I was hooked from the first note, once it turned heavy and fast I was in awe and have been a metal head ever since. I would love to have that feeling again.
I was at Cliff`s last concert in Oslo, Norway, before the tragic accident, standing right under him , he was on another planet playing that bass, shaking his long black hair. I will never forget him, the most heavy metal artist ever!

I've worried for years that good metal would be lost on the newer generations but you guys are bringing it back and you're explaining the real meaning of these songs for people that may not have totally gotten the picture. Alex Hefner your doing a great job bro! Your reactions are awesome, and I love how u explain the lyrics for all the people new to Metallica. Keep it up!!! Spit out the Bone next man, u need some new Metallica in the mix and the video is sick!
Cliff is a lost treasure. He played that bass like it was a 6 string. In fact the first time James and Lars heard him they thought they were hearing a weird 6 string solo. He was the soul of Metallica. I'm glad the band kept the faith that Cliff taught them. Don't compromise....ever.

Fade to black seems to be the perfect song for this guy. A mixture of important lyrics and awesome instrumentals seems to be what he likes. That should be next hands down.

God I love this band...top 5 bands of all time....such great playing with great energy...even live this is so crisp....just tooooooo damn good......thanks for the reaction
People who don't listen to rock can miss how much it is influenced by classical composers. Many of the great artists were classically trianed and bring that training into their works. One of the reasons albums like S and M and the Use Your Illussion albums from GnR, to name a couple, could use orchestrated music successfully. Also why many rock fans can also enjoy classical. There is also the who sub genre of symphonic metal with bands like Nightwish and Therion blending them.
Cliff was amazing. His bass solo anaesthesia pulling teeth is well worth a listen. Song wasn’t cut short. They were just going straight into the next track The 4 horsemen

Oh man, it makes me so freakin happy to see someone discovering Metallica (like I did). I can relate 100% to his enthusiasm while listening to this epic music. I really enjoy someone enjoying Metallica :D
The most important song of my life, simply like this. Talk about the spanish civil war, my grandfather fought in that war. Glory to the fallen. Cliff'em all.
Amazing how Cliff was only in 3 albums but he SHOULD be considered the GOAT of the Bass, just imagines what more he could have done, what more solos we could have heard
On Master of Puppets' reaction you said you like instruments do the speaking so I just copy pasted my comment from that video since this is more recent xD You like instrumentals to do the speaking? Okay then, I recommend listening To Live is To Die. This is an instrumental written after Cliff Burton's death, the band's bassits, in a bus crash. The song basically reflects how angry and how sad the band members felt after the insident.
iRaptus Gaming he didnt start playing ESP’s until late 87 early 88 the guitar in this video is a Gibson. James’ first signature model didn’t come out until the mid 90’s and it was a V shape
@@Raptus_Gaming James was using Gibson explorers at this time he later moved to ESP explorers but eventually they had to change the shape to the ESP Snakebyte after Gibson sued them
In my eyes Cliff Burton was the Jimi Hendrix of the Bass guitar, he was absolutely amazing with his playing style, he was doing things with the sound of a bass guitar that no one else had ever done and it fucking rocked. He died way too young and the question will always remain, what could he have accomplished with a long and healthy life?? Watch pulling teeth from this same video to see what im talking about. Cliff Burton was an absolute beast on the bass, i am just happy we have the footage of him that we do!!!
Sorry for the delay guys. I was working with some ass trash WiFi. Happy Mother’s Day to all the Hefnerd moms out there ❤️❤️
Alex Hefner you said you couldn't rock the Jew fro but I think you need to grow the Jew fro

too bad I voted for enter sandman but make sure to react to it as well :)

I agree. I say the same thing about Bon Scott of AC DC.
when James starts singing someone throws something on stage and he quickly flips them the bird.

Oops, i glanced right over this
Happens to me, often
Such a dope ass guitar
Indeed, it is!
Flying V is also a sick model :)
Okay I've honestly beenwatching your videos reacting to Metallica all afternoon and I can't stop! They are so genuine and I truly love watching Met getting recognized by everyone as IT.
Through the Fire and Flames is the ultimate shredding song- it's power metal, not thrash, but everyone needs to hear it
All hail Cliff, quite possibly the greatest bass player ever!!!
I have been a metalhead forever (around 25 years) and i learn things from you, thanks to your research and in depth analysis. Keep up the good work!
Dude, I reckon you should start up another series, or another channel even, about deep topics. You seem knowledgable on a lot of stuff, I keep seeing it throughout your videos. I for one would love something like that
Liam Jorgensen that is very interesting! I’ll give it some thought. Hit me in the DMs if you have concrete ideas 👍🏼
Alex Hefner too easy man, I'll hit you up and bounce some ideas around
God I love this band...top 5 bands of all time....such great playing with great energy...even live this is so crisp....just tooooooo damn good......thanks for the reaction
I´m a Metallica-Fan for decades, but i´ve never seen a Live-Cliff-Bass-Solo before. Thank you for this magical moment!!!!!
Cliff is and was the best Headbanger of ALL TIME!!!
FreedumFries ehhh...no.
nope almighty Tom is
Sligfantry your opinion
if you're talking about Tom from Slayer I'll agree w/ you on that.
yes i mean him
Metallica has a classical music influence if you couldn't tell. Cliff and Lars are classically trained in music.
Cliff was for sure. Lars could hardly even play when he started the band or so James says.
Rest In Peace to one of the greatest musicians to grace the metal stage. 🖤
Metallica fade to black
YESSS
Please react to "Fade to Black", "Welcome Home(Sanitarium), "Fight Fire with Fire", "Seek & Destroy" and "Battery(live in seattle 89)".
Cliff was amazing. His bass solo anaesthesia pulling teeth is well worth a listen. Song wasn’t cut short. They were just going straight into the next track The 4 horsemen
It's like you say, they are on another level; Intelligent and incredible musicians. From insane solos through wonderful composition to meaningful and insightful lyrics. Metallica. It's not a music choice... it's a life choice! 🤘
You should listen to “Call of Ktulu” by Metallica. It’s their best Instrumental in my opinion
Still love Cliff's "eyes" bit...I do that motion ever time I listen to this song :) 7:23
In 5:05 from the public they throw something at james and he raises his middle finger

Are you making a fantasy Monsters of Rock Lineup and their setlist? And when it comes to Fear of the Dark I think that the best version is Rock In Rio when it sounds like all of Brazil is singing w/ them.
What about wherever i may roam and atlas rise i love those two
Inferno Games They are good too, just cant fit everything into 1 comment :)
Oh man, it makes me so freakin happy to see someone discovering Metallica (like I did). I can relate 100% to his enthusiasm while listening to this epic music. I really enjoy someone enjoying Metallica :D
You should react to Metallica “The Thing That Should Not Be” Live Seattle 89.
The kings themselves, looking baby faced in their early 20s.
The most important song of my life, simply like this.
Talk about the spanish civil war, my grandfather fought in that war. Glory to the fallen. Cliff'em all.
that is a Gibson explorer my dude.
Joshdabomb 777 what Hetfield is using isn’t a Gibson, it’s a ESP.
Het started using ESP during ...And Justice For All. These early days he was indeed using Gibsons.
Alex Noftz actually he still uses ESP it's a custom ESP Iron Cross which is shaped like a Gibson
You can even see the Gibson logo close up at 3:30
Wrath Child it's an ESP Snakebyte, look it up
I think that is time for "Symphony of Destruction"!
Walk maybe?
Nikolay Jovanovic It is, time for the symphony of destruc-tiooon!
Slayer- Rein in blood!!
Nikolay Jovanovic hell yea i love Megadeth
And pantera
Holy Wars...
Amazing how Cliff was only in 3 albums but he SHOULD be considered the GOAT of the Bass, just imagines what more he could have done, what more solos we could have heard
Do 'Ride the Lightning' next. About a man about to die in the electric chair. Insane rifts.
May I add that it has a sick ass solo. (And that ride riff tho)
Nah I think a lot of stuff from And Justice For All has the best drumming, ie Shortest Straw, Blackened
Joe But hes only dreaming...
On Master of Puppets' reaction you said you like instruments do the speaking so I just copy pasted my comment from that video since this is more recent xD
You like instrumentals to do the speaking?
Okay then, I recommend listening To Live is To Die. This is an instrumental written after Cliff Burton's death, the band's bassits, in a bus crash. The song basically reflects how angry and how sad the band members felt after the insident.
Exactly im telling him in almost every comment that To Live Is To Die is a must !!!
i got this dvd and i love to crank this song, this song was out almost 3 months before i was born. good times.
The guitar you are referring to is a Gibson/Epiphone explorer
James currently uses an ESP Explorer but I'm not sure if he had one in this video
iRaptus Gaming he didn’t have his own signature model with esp yet. He’s using and explorer not his own snakebyte
iRaptus Gaming he didnt start playing ESP’s until late 87 early 88 the guitar in this video is a Gibson. James’ first signature model didn’t come out until the mid 90’s and it was a V shape
@@Raptus_Gaming James was using Gibson explorers at this time he later moved to ESP explorers but eventually they had to change the shape to the ESP Snakebyte after Gibson sued them
The Guitar was a "Gibson Explorer"
In my eyes Cliff Burton was the Jimi Hendrix of the Bass guitar, he was absolutely amazing with his playing style, he was doing things with the sound of a bass guitar that no one else had ever done and it fucking rocked. He died way too young and the question will always remain, what could he have accomplished with a long and healthy life?? Watch pulling teeth from this same video to see what im talking about. Cliff Burton was an absolute beast on the bass, i am just happy we have the footage of him that we do!!!
Fade to black is a Effin masterpiece.
To anyone that wants to learn to play Bass fast Cliff Burton RIP 🤘🤘
Thank you, cause I do🤘🤘
Rising Storm me too bro i’m happy for u
I've picked up Bass four weeks ago, wish me luck🤘
