I think that Giovanni using a Marowak on his team with people knowing about Team Rocket's high-profile killing of a Marowak would be a great way of reminding the audience of how evil Team Rocket is supposed to be and how disrespectful they are to pretty much everyone and everything.
except it will be kinda weird since well team rocket fricking commited oof to one in the wild and giovanni just catches one before or after (imagine he caught one after tho) and then he has another creature of that species just eradicated.

I think I need to point out that Elesa's main gimmick was to spam volt switch so that you didn't really know which Emolga you were fighting and I think that was quite clever. As a kid, I used to consider Emolga as Elesa's ace honestly

@@FalcoNat I had to use Zebstrika with grinding my nuzlocke challenge team up to the same level. I know, it sucks, but at least I can use my favorite move, Attract, to get past her Zebstrika.
My Zebstrika's ability: Lightning Rod (Absorbs Electric-type Attacks and boosts Special Attack)
I just had a dwebble with stealth rock, so I didn't have any trouble against the emolga; but I can see why you would.

Hardest part of beating Elesa is playing with one hand.
I really love the design of Raihan's gym battle. While not the first gym leader to have a double battle format, it reinforced the idea that we could use more. Weather effects being the main gimmick for his entire gym is really fun. Not flawless, but would definitely like to see the concepts used more
I don’t considering he is a dragon gym leader with only 2 being dragons when there are multiple dragon types you can get before the 8th gym

I actually object to the "replace one of the Emolgas with Tynamo" thing for BW1 Elesa because two volt-switiching Emolgas is a very, very good gimmick.

One has a Choice Scarf to be faster snd the other one has a Choice Specs for a stronger Volt Switch!
Without any held items they are just the same Pokémon constantly switching up all the time without any good reason to do so!

Thank you but the idea would still only work on paper but never in-game because EVERY player see the HP bars of the two Emolgas and already knows that something isn't right.
The Volt Switch Spam could work as a strategy with choice or over held items but not as a wannabe version of Zoroark's Illusion ability.
Not even Best Wishes Ash would fall for this nonsense and we all know his fight with Elesa in the anime!

I honestly wish that they would branch out from just having gyms specialized around types. I like what you mentioned in another video about a hypothetical situation where someone was a honey tree specialist. Imagine a gym leader who in pokemon available at night. Or a Dog Breeder specialist who has different dog Pokemon. A gym that is part science lab that studies dreams and has sleep/dream related pokemon. Maybe only have a few like this per generation so most of the game is still more traditional.
The gym leaders have their own pokemon yet the leagues forces them to use one single type. This can be evidenced by the first gym leader of black and white 2. Not only do we know he has stronger pokemon, we also know he has a starter.
I like the idea of a team that isn’t specifically just one Type. Giving a team a unifying strategy or thematic connection would be great. And to be fair, I think Raihan does this pretty well with his Sandstorm team. So getting more teams like that would be great.

Honestly I kind of agree. I think a good example I had discussed with a friend when the new games were announced was a sort of "futuristic/technology" themed gym, with example pokemon such as the Porygon line, Metagross line, and Rotom.
Or a "storm" gym with a mix of water, ice, electric, and flying types and a heavy emphasis on weather.

Well the player does have access to many of the Platinum dex pokemon (houndoom, Gardevoir) during a playthrough via the Underground, but yeah, the NPCs need access as well.

@@amberstargameswell many platinum dex pokemon are available in the Underground during the playthrough. Sure it takes extra work to find them, but they do help tremendously with team building.

@@Direwolf181 Third party devs probably were told "you remaking DP games" and they went "oh okay so do same game, but prettier" and then somehow.. still included *some* of Plat dex... only in the underground.. only for the player.. but *did* do Plat dex for rematches... but also just royally fucking with the E4 by being competitive stats and hidden abilities... they.. seriously did suck a weird mixed bag but still did the worse of each option

I think the anime and manga are helpful for explaining the gym leaders teams. Sabrinas Abra Kadabra and Alakazam team makes sense because in the anime, her gym is full of psychic spoon benders, so while it may be a somewhat redundant team, her reliance on them makes sense.
You suggested replacing Giovannis first Rhyhorn with a Sandslash, but I personally think a Golem would make more sense, as Brock is mostly seen with a geodude instead, and his signature pokemon is more onix/steelix, while Giovanni uses a Golem in the Adventure Manga and blows up the entire gym, which i think is hilarious.

I never looked at Let's Go but I didn't realize just how much it fixed their teams. This is what all remakes should do, fix garbage teams. Nobody's that nostalgic for garbage gym leader teams.

The only thing they should have done with Lets Go is either replace Slowbro or Jynx with Hypno (To avoid to much overlap with Lorelei) and replace Koga's Weezing (Since Crobat is his Johto ace) with Tentacruel to avoid to much overlap with Agatha.

Erika: vileplume and victreebel
Sabrina: venomoth (sometimes)
Giovanni: nidoking and nidoqueen
Agatha: arbok, gengar/haunter, golbat
(These were taken mostly from the FRLG teams)
I’ve seen people on the mandjtv subreddit complain a bunch of times about koga and poison types in kanto, but nobody seems to realize how many other trainers have poison type pokemon in kanto.
This is why I think treating Koga as a poison specialist is too simplistic. His poison specialism is more incidental. I’d argue he's a status condition specialist. His tactics are based on ninjitsu: stealth and hitting from the shadows. In the Elite 4 he speaks more about how many status conditions he will inflict than his type specialty and all his pokemon inflict at least 1 condition, and this is without even mentioning his evasion tactics. He’s a ninja first, poison type trainer second.
Erika makes sense but Sabrina having a Venemoth in the first place makes no sense since there are other psychich types and Agatha should never have been made a Ghost specialist due to there only being one Ghost line.
So it makes no sense for the Gym Leader who SPECIALIZES in Poison to have to repeat Pokémon just because they gave them to specialists that don't need them.
Besides the "other trainers use other Poison types" arguement is silly because 1.) There are still other Poison types that weren't used by them 2.) Different specialists means different strategies can be employed and 3.) Gym Leaders already use Pokémon used by other trainers anyways.

One thing to note with Johto is the reason Chuck, Olivia, Pryce, and the general level curve of their areas being so similar is Game Freak technically allows you to handle them in any order so in order to compensate for that they kept everything around the same level.
They’re pretty much expecting you to go right instead of left in ecruteak city because Pryce is a lower level than the others

I believe that a younger Sabrina was saved by that Venomoth during her Mt.Silver travels. Most likely a dangerous dark type like a wild Tyranitar wiped out her entire team and that wild Venomoth having a vendetta against that Tyranitar because of it's rock typing used Bug Buzz and defeated the Tyranitar. Then she also noticed the psychic potential of Venomoth and the eternal telepathic bond was created. 🍥🦋💜

in the case of kalos gym leaders, i think everything would be solved if the starters had mega evolutions, until the 4th gym your starter would probably already have the level to evolve to its final form, if you received a mega after the 4th gym and all the others from there would be much better (it would be almost the same of ORAS because they did it right)
if gyms 5-8 had megas, then clemont would be ampharos, valerie would be mawile, olympia would be mega slowbro, and wulfric would be mega abomasnow
Yeah some of the mega evolutions picks, while needed, were weird. If I’m not mistaken I don’t believe a single gen 6 mon got a mega, which is weird because gen 6 introduced megas?? Also gen 1 and 3 starters got megas, but NOT the starters of mega evolution’s home region.

Hey man, lurker here, just wanted to say, the Weezing line and Venomoth line teams make sense, if you think about it, there is a master and some apprentices, very ninja, and it shows how annoying a single type of pokemon can be when they are scaled up a couple levels, and have a slightly different moveset. Just an observation though, not to argue, I just prefer the poison type, and always thought his teams were a nice homage to ninjas in that regard.

Watson having Plusle and Minun would actually be counter-productive from a design standpoint as their abilities, plus and minus respectively, were meant to show synergies that could occur in the at-the-time new double battle system.
Unless Watson had a battle partner, Plusle and Minun would have muddied the synergy concept by appearing in singles format from a gym leader.

For Volkner I would personally add a rotom because the only thing needed to beat him is a Pokémon that can earthquake. Maybe rotom could be programmed to be a form super effective vs your starter or it’s completely random every time.

Jeez, even freaking ORAS did it better, and they just threw that mechanic in because it was a Gen 6 game. Let's do the math: X & Y had the Lysandre fight and the championship fight against Diantha (I'm not including the Mega Lucario vs. Mega Lucario fight in that because it's basically a glorified tutorial), while ORAS has the final fight with Maxie/Archie, the fight with Wally at the end of Victory Road, the championship fight against Steven AND the post-credits fight against Brendan/May. And that's not even including the post-game content, where every Elite Four member gets a Mega on their rematch teams. Dear God, how did X & Y screw this up so much??!!!

Well in ORAS once they added the national dex after you first beat the elite four. They get mega evolution and change their teams to national dex pokemon. I remember drake using a Hydreigon and Haxorus

I definitely agree that every Kalos leader should've had a Mega, and even the E4 could've definitely had them as well. I feel like Megas should've been a staple for Clemont and beyond, Since Ramos is older, Maybe he's against that "New Fangled Mega Evolution"

Actually, if you add a second Abomasnow with a mega stone equiped then it would be a decent enough challenge, but still beatable.

I'm glad I found someone else that has the same mindset as me. While I was watching I literally felt like pulling out my hair because the pokemon Yellow teams were made the way they were due to Tha anime. Though I can understand not liking to Red and Blue teams.

@@robertlupa8273 I did some research and the most likely reason is because by the time the anime got to Blaine, Game Freak was pretty ready to release the game, so anything around that time was just modified from the game instead of being based fully on the anime.

I genuinely enjoyed battling Ryhan as I favor doubles myself, and I liked that he had a theme running with the sandstorm, but it has bothered me from the start that they call him a Dragon type gym leader when he's really a weather gym leader. Even his underlings had other weather effects in their battles..

I favor double battles myself as well, and I hate that there aren't more. Every time I run into two grunts of the evil organization at once, it INFURIATES me that they don't always do them as a double battle. And it's not because they're letting you heal between, because usually the next one starts right after.
There is literally 4 other dragons accessible by the 8th gym to literally give him a team of 5 to 6 dragons by the 8th gym. You have flygon, duraludon, drakloak, dracovish, dracozolt, noivern, and a few others bc his current team is a disgrace to be called a dragon gym and dragon types are my favorite. I literally beat x and y with all dragons starting with lvl 1-5 dragon Pokémon
I liked that Raihan was different with his battle style. Choosing to do a double battle was unexpected and very cool the use of weather effects was also very unique
This may be an unpopular opinion but I'm actually fine with some gym leaders having one pokémon that doesn't belong to the type they specialize in, I think it makes things a little more unpredictable and challenging.

I like venomoth in a psychic gym and octilery in an electric gym. Gives some versatility. Wish we had more gym leaders who equipped Pokémon that didn't match their type of gym.

Johto's 5th, 6th, and 7th Leaders can be fought in any order, as are...most of Kanto's Leaders, so the level curve is bad there. All of them should have 4 Pokemon still.
I disagree. While you do have flexibility in what order you fight them in there is still an intended order. Fighting a higher placed Gym Leader early is essentially the player choosing to have a more difficult battle OR the players team matches up better against a later gym so it's better to fight that gym for levels and stat boosts (As Gym badges in early games boosted your Pokemons stats). It's pretty common from my experience that players will delay Sabrina until after Blaine since Blaine's AI is terrible and team isn't particularly strong while Psychic types are OP in Gen 1.
@@bdf1006 I'll give you Kanto being more of a player choice than a game design intention. However with Johto it feels very intentional that the player is allowed to choose the order of gyms 5, 6 and 7. Since after gym 4 you get surf. Additionally you're in a crossroad and the next gym choice both require surf to access. Hell if anything I'd say Jasmine is gym 7 since she is game wise, further away from gym 4.
Additionally a point for the intention being "do these gyms in your order" is the radio town. After you complete gym 7, the radio town takeover happens forcing the player back to a central location and putting them back on route to the next gym after takeover.
I believe gym battles should always be 3 on 3. The Elite 4 should be 4 on 4. The champion should use 6. Only that regions Pokemon should be used by gym leaders. Everyone else can use whatever.

Bugsy’s scyther is irreplaceable in my mind. I had such a hard time with it my first play through on the original gold when I was younger so it was so satisfying beating it that I fell in love with that battle.
I feel the same way with Faulkner and the Pidgeot line. Some Mons are just symbolically linked to certain trainers and they can't be separated.
Everything before Morty in Gen 2 was just blatant trolling by the devs. Flying type gym has a ground type coverage move. Bug gym whacks you with a STAB 110-Attack fueled move that doubles in power each time it's used. And of course everyone knows about Whitney's Demon Cow. (Honorable mention to her Clefairy who once Metronome'd me with a STAB hyper beam)

@@SpadeDraco fury cutter is only base 20 on the first hit, I know it reaches 110 at its peak but it takes a few turns to get there. You are implying it starts out at 110 and doubles each turn, potentially ending up at 3520 base power on the 6th pokemon, which simply isn’t true.

Yeah, Beedrill fits; its pin missile in Gen 1 is definitely ninja-ish, and in pokemon yellow, they could put swords dance and double team on it to make it more of a ninja theme. Arbok also fits because it has glare, which adds to the whole strategy theme Koga also had.
Imo, Koga should've also had Gengar. It's name comes from "doppelganger".. a body double or shadow. It screams ninja. But I guess it wouldn't make it unique to Agatha. But still, I think it's a missed opportunity there.

Agatha is just a repeat poison specialist. Her first non-Poison type is her Gen 3 Rematch team with a Misdreavus, and she doesn't have another until Let's Go with Alolan Marowak.

Flint was forced to use Infernape(a starter) because the only other fire type was rapidash. Game freak didn’t think to add any fire types to DP dex.

The only change I’d make for Raihan’s gym team is to replace his Gigalith (which has basically no dragon-like attributes) with a Tyranitar. Tyranitar is far more dragon-like than Gigalith, and both would have similar functions: setting up sandstorm for the rest of his team. The only major differences are that Tyranitar is faster than Gigalith, but is also 4x weak to Fighting.
Again there are multiple dragons you can get by the 8th gym his whole team pissed me off since he literally had 1 galar dragon and are at least 6 new dragons in the game. Definitely would of enjoyed his gym more if it was a full team of 6 double battle with actual dragons instead of a sandstorm team.

I always felt like Koga and Sabrina got jumbled up somewhere because Marshes are more associated with murk and poison and the like whereas Souls are more associated pyche/psychics. Plus Sabrina has Venemoth and Koga's gym is full of Drowzee and Hypno wielding jugglers. Like, it seems like they decided to switch their roles in the game but they never got around to finishing rewriting all of the code for the game. Or something.

@@Kyush4 The badges are named after colors in Japanese - Marsh Badge (the Psychic one) is called the Gold Badge (gold is associated with psychic powers for some reason). Meanwhile Soul Badge is called the Pink Badge.
Basically, whoever translated the games might've switched the names of the two for whatever reason. The original names make sense.
Wonder what he has to say for the Paldean gym leaders. None of them have Paldean aces (and the Terastellize mechanic shouldn't count, since the Elite four still had paldean aces that coincided with their type)
The iono trailera showed that her partner/ace is bellibolt, the terrastal pokemon are to be taken more of a mixup than their ace, like sudowoodo who is a rock type and has rock type moves a type that deals with 4/5 weaknesses of the grass type, iono herself has mismagius who is a femenine pokemon and has levitate to make a pokemon with not weaknesses that or have thematic relevance with them like ryme's toxticitry
honestly the terastellize mechanic gave them such a good opportunity to just slap any new Paldean pokemon into a team and just have it terastellize into the gym leader's type.
instead it was always wasted on older pokemon and the only case where I particularly liked it was when the grass type gym changed a Sudowoodo to a grass type, I felt like that was fairly clever and if all of the aces had been like that I would've been fine with it.
if they'd done other stuff like that (perhaps have Katy's ace be a Pawniard terastellized to the bug type for example) I would've been fine with them not having Paldean aces.
it's made worse by the fact that they all already have one or more Paldean pokemon on their team, just not in the ace slot

After Ecruteak City gym you get the HM surf, which doesn’t just make Cianwood City available, but also makes Mahogany Town and the Lake of Rage available to you. This means that you could choose either route. This also means that the devs probably saw this, so they made the levels to be more equal to Jasmine and Chuck. It is part of Johto’s open experience, which is one of the reasons why the original and the remakes are so deeply loved by a lot of fans. Now, it could’ve been a coincidence, idk, but still, something to think about.

I'm sorry, but this 'open' experience is why I don't like Johto as much as the other regions. Unless you like grinding, you're bodied into using the in-game trade mons, so half your team is gonna be the same- the antithesis of why pokemon playthroughs are fun, the diversity of it. My home region is Sinnoh, idk about the backtracking, but Johto would've been so much better if there was a strength block to get into Mahogany town.

I will say I think the reason Sabrina & Lt Surge only uses the Alakazam line & Raichu in their respective Gym Battles in Pokémon Yellow is because Yellow was made to mimic the anime as closely as possible but since she's the strongest Gym Leader in every version of Kanto, it makes sense to keep the Alakazam from Red, Green and Blue since her Kadabra didn't evolve in the anime, and Raichu was Lt Surge's only Pokémon in the anime. But nevertheless I agree with all your gym leader changes. Another great video as always, keep up the great work Michael
For Morty, I think one of the Haunters, not the Gastly, should’ve been swapped for Misdreavus. Sure, it’d make him a tiny bit easier, but it’d mean there were no repeats.

Deadass, I thought Skarmory was introduced in Hoenn cause of Steven. I was a literal child when G/S/C came out, and stayed as far away as I could from ground/rock/steel types cause of their slow exp growth. Anything rock and ground could beat, I used electric and water and/or grass for, respectively

I mean, I understand that they said the developers said they would stay faithful to the original Diamond and Pearl games, but frankly this is staying a bit TOO faithful for my tastes. Are these Pokemon still catchable in the main story but just not in the Sinnoh Dex? What's going on?

10:57 I think the reason Pryce’s levels are the same as Chuck’s is because the game allows you to challenge either one of them first, which while this makes the game structure more open, it’s also forced to lower Pryce’s levels in case the player would challenge him first. I honestly think it would’ve been better if they just blocked off Mahogany until after Jasmine and kept it linear, which would let them increase Pryce’s levels.
