Your take on Kalos totally makes sense. Just imagine if they had switched up Diantha and Velerie from the start. So now the champion uses the brand new type which is suddenly the strongest type in the game. Also Valerie already has a champion worthy outfit.

Personally when playing through XY I kinda hoped that's what they planned for Diantha. Just having Lysander as a red herring cause "wow this guy is so comically angsty he must be the bad guy" only to get to the champion's hall and find out Diantha had been manipulating him and pulling the strings to get him to wreak havoc.

Valerie always felt more interesting than Diantha and had a presence to be more than just the sixth gym leader to me. She definitely would’ve been an awesome champion who specializes in fairy types with a mega mawile as her ace.

People just don’t notice it since he is the last gym leader so by the time you get there your entire team is already evolved and at a higher level. But Wallace is in fact the stronger water type trainer in the entire franchise (one of the strongest types), plus being famously known as the face of the pokemon beauty contests (which are very popular). With those two unique attributes it’s very clear why he was the best candidate to be Champion.
I just played Soul Silver for the first time, and Karen was the coolest fight ever. I completely swept Lance. But Karen took me to my final Pokémon. She absolutely has my vote for Johto Champion.
I like the idea of Koga being the Champion eventually. Seeing him go from gym leaders to E4 to Champion would make him even more of an absolute legend.

the joke aside its not entirely wrong. the closes story reason for the change comes from the ruby and sapphire chapter of the pokemon adventure manga. its stated there that wallace did beat steven and became champion, but didn't take the mantle because he wanted to secede his master juan as the 8th gym leader. also because he and winona where a thing and he wanted to be closee to her. at the end of that section steven gives the title back to wallace and some time things happen and so it stays that way for emerald. as for the emerald section it focuses on the battle frontier mostly from what I remember.

For Black and White: Finally, there is a fighting type user who has a chance at becoming the champion.
Also, Hop is genuinely a powerful trainer who is definitely worth considering. By the end of the game, he easily matches up with his brother and gives a pretty great challenge. If he tried to be champion, I can see him doing it. The only reason he wasn’t was because we were his fight leading up to the finals.

Karen's words are the most quoted thing in the entire pokémon franchise. Very good choice.

That's what I use
Wally could have a great team in Emerald in the post game.
Gardevoir, Altaria, Breloom, Arcanine, Ampharos, and Tyranitar.
I think these Pokémon fit him better in terms of personality. He already has Gardevoirand Altaria.
I think Breloom is a useful Pokémon he probably should have had instead of Roselia.
Arcanine is like a guard dog for him.
Ampharos is a friendly Pokémon that I could see comforting him when he’s struggling.
And Tyranitar is a pseudo legendary that wasn’t used in the previous generation. It’s dark typing counters psychic and ghost, and the rock is good against flying and bug. It would be the equivalent of his Gen 6 Garchomp. Both contrast his timid nature.
X and Y should've had Professor Sycamore be champion imo. Would've been so fitting and a way better choice over Diantha
Also, he’s handsome and everyone wants to see more of him.

I think Lorelei would have a pretty good chance against Lance. Her entire team is ice themed, one of dragon’s only weaknesses, and the vast majority are also water, doing well against his Charizard and Aerodactyl
Her Lapras can also learn Thunderbolt and electrocute Gyarados.
I don't think she wants to champion tho as she literally retired from being an elite 4 so I doubt she would wanna be champion
Lysander has the greatest chance in my opinion if he didn't die
But he doesn't in Ultra Sun and Moon, so we can use his team from there and fill the gaps at Diantha
Okay, but imagine going through Victory Road in ORAS, but not finding Wally. You reach Steven, who tells you he's already been defeated. He steps aside, and Wally is standing there waiting for you.

I could've sworn Juan mentioned Wallace beating Steven due to Steven being more interested in rock collecting. Also, the gen 6 remakes of gen 3 also take place in the 3 year time difference so wally definitely has his gen 6 best team
Just so you're aware, the Steven and Wallace relationship was elaborated upon in ORAS. There's even a cutscene at the end of the game where Steven says something along the lines of "when the time comes you might have to take my place" or something like that, implying Emerald is just another timeline where Wallace succeeds him sooner compared to story events, similar to how Team Rocket just does all their relevant story events a year later in LGPE vs. the Kanto games where Red and Blue are just leaving Pallet Town.

There actually is an explanation for Wallace's cape in the PokeSpe manga. That cape is the signature champion cape of the Hoenn region, and Steven was the one in possession of it at first. It was later revealed that Wallace was supposed to be the Hoenn's champion, having won the League, but he refused the position because he wanted to inherit the position of Sootopolis gym leader from his mentor Juan, so the one to come in second at the time, Steven, became the champion instead. He later on returned said cape to its rightful owner Wallace during the climax of the manga.
So, yes, becoming the Hoenn champion does give you a fancy cape.
Man... Valerie would be such an awesome, popular, and likeable champion lol. I love her character just for the fact that she has strong ties to Johto, being I think a former kimono girl and clearly having a Sylveon as her ace, implying it was a starter Eevee.

@Sean Simon LuRes She didn’t. They had two matches which both interrupted for different reasons. The first match was interrupted due to Pikachu getting captured by Team Rocket and there second one was interrupted due Ash and Greninja fainting from exhaustion but not being knocked out. As far the anime continuity is concerned Diantha has never beaten Ash and vice versa.

I think lorelei should be an honorable mention for Kanto, she's very confident but extremely professional and i mean...She's the Ice-Type Elite four member. If we were to give her Mamoswine instead of Pillowswine on her FR/LG rematch team her team would consist of Dewgong, Lapras, Jinx, Cloyster, Mamoswine and (If we gave her one of the other pokemon she's used before) Articuno or even Slowbro. Chicks a monster honestly.
Mamoswine is gen 4, FRLG is gen 3. Thus she can't have Mamoswine in it.

Wally being champion is something I want to see. The underdog coming out on top, proving to all what he's not the meek boy he was perceived as is a great thing people enjoy.

In Emerald, I'm pretty sure it was mentioned that Steven straight up never tried to become champion due to him quitting competitive training in favor of continuing his hobby as a geologist, and somehow this... let him train his pokemon to be stronger than in the universe where he became champion...?
In R/S he's busy taking on challengers, dealing with Hoenn's many problems(people breath ash! Too much water!) and his father's corporation
In Emerald he's chilling training his pokemon and following his passion by making them casually crush boulders for a living

Actually nothing much is mentioned in Emerald concerning Steven and Championship title. I think that decision was less plot and more the creators wanted a Red-Champion-esque battle like G/S/C, given it had already proven to be popular. Considering Emerald is an alternate tale to Ruby/Sapphire. It actually opens a lot of possibilities:
1. Steven was champion but is later defeated by Wallace (how the protagonist of the games does it every time, and how we saw Iris take the title from Alder)
2. Wallace was champion, Steven defeated him and became champion, then retired and the championship title automatically reverted to Wallace since he was the last to hold it (Ex: Red left, his title reverted to Blue/Green, Blue/Green rejected it so it reverted to the highest ranking Elite 4 member.)
3. Wallace was champion and Steven defeated him, but decided not to take the title so it remained with the current champion
4. Wallace was champion and Steven didn't defeat him/didn't attempt to
I have this faint memory of beating Steven and then all he has to say after that is "Hmm". I can't actually remember but I just have this memory of him being salty that he lost to the mc
I think if Clair had a really emotional moment that broke her ego (let's say her Kingdra dies or something), she could break her limits and contend with Lance. A humbled Clair who puts her love and attention into growing a new 6th party member (let's say an Ice type, signifying her new personality, Lapras). She would be terrifying

Seeing Sanqua in 'Legends Arceus' really threw me back in memory lane, remembering Karen's precious line after beating her on the Pokemon.
The subtlety in the characters in x and y serve the story the games constantly suffer from exposition x and y get to the point of why we are there, to fight. They just needed to utilize mega forms more in the challenge

Just as an FYI, the Steven vs Wallace debate is settled with the manga which I understand you not using. The manga explains that Wallace is the champion as he beat Steven, but refused to take the throne, preferring being visited by more trainers as a gym leader and also being able to leave to still show up at contests. So yeah: Wallace is the technical champion, but let Steven keep the role, Steven was originally champion.
I think the Steven-Wallace champion debacle was solved in the anime. Wallace was champion in Hoenn during the Wallace Cup in Diamond and Pearl and then in Journeys Master 8 tournament Steven had said he had recently became Hoenn Champion 🙏
