Hey, just as an update, the game was ported to Steam. I don't know if it was a "legal" port, but the person who ported it said that they wanted the flash game to be playable from here on out despite the Flash collapse, so if anyone wants to play, or if you wish to recommend it to someone despite Flash being defunct, there is a free Steam version now.
The scariest part is that the circle in the hat who shot the square was the circle from the beginning. The circle whose photo was captured praising him and influenced others to wear hats. And he shot the square who started off screaming at others. Whose photo was taken to instill fear into others. The one painted in a positive light turned out evil, and the one painted as a maniac changed his ways. The media never really shows us who people truly are, does it?
I hardly remember writing this comment, and boy am I a hypocrite. Half of my vocabulary is stuff along the lines of, "People are awful, people should die." Ah, well. At least it was a nice message.
This game represents the media and this is how powerful media can really go. Hatred, discrimination, war and fake news. We shouldn't blame the media for it. We should blame the people in it. "Evil people makes evil catastrophes"
@@strangevol5264 They're the ones who create and publish news that may influence the mind of the other viewers in the first place. ( and what I actually meant at the comment section is the people BEHIND the media lol )

Like look how in the game the media words the incidents, where it is worded in a way that either exaggerates situations (like labelling the square who was screaming as attacking a circle, despite the square only yelling at the circle and the circle not being a particularly important part to the story), ignores happy things happening, or straight up lies about what is happening (like when they say that squares hate circles when only one guy was screaming at people).
@@myprofilepictureisafishyou're all correct! Systems have many parts and the system should be changed, and we can start with ourselves and what we give our attention to!
I wish this game had more endings. Like sure we get the message but i think itd be funny to see just the squares hate on each other or the people panicking over a cricket invasion.
Andrew, I agree. It's both funny and sad, how a simple game like this share more in common with the world, than any other media. The message was clear and strong... Nice Ghostrick profile pic, by the way.
Brighton Betoit ,The best part of his play through was the fact that he is wanting to make the world a better place. …And we all can do that right here.
The fact that taking pics of positive stuff did NOTHING (other than initially priming you to click, via the guy in the hat,) really makes the message rather... simplistic.
that's true, there could have been a way to stop it from escalating - but i think then you'd be confused as to what the game was supposed to be, when nothing ever happened in the game!
Simplistic, sure, but that’s the point. It’s such an obvious point that has been going on as long as media and news has existed, and it’s sadly as true as ever.
Strange how everyone's saying how "relevant this is to current culture" considering this sort of attention has been cycled through for years and years. People may not be able to bring it up from memory, I know I can't, but things like the Red Scare and general trends of "be scared, be angry" have been around far longer than we'd like to know. History repeats itself, again and again and again. We're out of new plotlines, we just recycle ones we already did with new characters to call the villains.
@@fern4753 ... I think it was much more general than the BLM movement. Mind Jan 6th. A lot of people were fully up the hole of “man, wild how things were allowed this time with minimal violence.” While some backbit that as if those folks were claiming every protest should be synonymous with riot, the point (that apparently needed to be said, and was) was that escalation doesn’t _help_ any one side, and that those promoting it in _any_ group are... well, basically, the man with the gun, in this. Whatever he got out of it goes unsaid (in real life, because it varies), but... hell, a phrase that’s been going around the past several months (that I’ve seen, for all I know it’s been around way longer) goes “so and so really just woke up today and chose Violence.” As a society, we’ve been holding tight to “story need CONFLICT” with a deathgrip, and keep going for the lowest of hanging fruit.
I was playing the game at school today and my teacher told everyone to play what I was playing and it taught the class a lesson about caring for each other.
This is actually a good teaching ways, especially to fulfill free time during class, it does not courage violence but spreadin awareness of how dark things can turn despite our selfishness
Actually, they did succeed. The happy square who was shot was the disgruntled, crazed square who started the cycle of paranoia. They got the square to stop being mad and be positive instead. The problem is that the media feels that people don't want to watch a feel good story about people learning to get along. Instead they'd rather keep the cycle of pain going, so in the end nobody is willing to listen to the happy heart hats.
The game could have had an alternate ending. I tried not to react and let the violent square become happy without starting the paranoia, but that is not possible. Maybe there is something that triggers it without starting paranoia.
GrimFaceHunter the point is to teach us, not give a good ending. you need the truth every once in a while, not a sugar-coated happily ever after, you know what i mean?
Ishtarru Humans will never get over their ignorant, self righteous, petty and downright appalling natures. If so then we would have had peace ages ago, but nope it only gets worse, just look at the Trump and Hillary supporters attacking each other.
Wow.... I didn't expect a message like that to come from a game like this. o-o But when you think about it it's 100% true. Not to be cheesy or anything, but as Yoda said, "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering." and indeed it fucking does. I think we've all seen that come to fruition just with this last election cycle. :/ But that's why it's important to be as positive as possible and spread as much hope and joy in the world as you can.
Well, if it's used right it CAN lead to good things... Like the Civil Rights Movement in the 60s. Folks of color were angry and tired of being treated the way they were being treated, but they were never violent with their anger. They just used it to fuel their point and get what they wanted and deserved, equality to whites. But I see your point, a lot of the time anger just leads to violence and that does no one any good.
While I disagree with Yoda that he confuses causation with correlation (a result of... FEAR), I will say that self-fulfilling prophecies do exist, and the media is one of those prophets.
Then again, there are two ways to interpret this. Notice how the news network aired every picture you took, the problem was that the people only showed up when it was a negative story. Maybe the message here is to look out for positive things
Although this is sometimes true, it is also the opposite IRL which I absolutely hate... When I tune in the news channel in the morning I prefer to watch the happenings around the country/world. I absolutely do NOT want to hear and couldn't care less about Celebrity X dating/breaking up with Celebrity Y...
Erik Sever That's what the media does to get views. Before the hat guy shot the square it was basically the media making race relations between circles and sqaures horrible just so it can get views.
Ze Filthiest Of Franks honestly. Like, it isn’t just one side even, it’s both sides doing the damage without realizing it. Both sides just hate each other so much and are growing so polarized that the majority of people(non extremists) are being forced to choose a side.
Property it doesn’t help that the man the Oval Office is acting as a catalyst for this and the rest of the GOP won’t take a stand against him even as he breaks their core values. Republicans have left the party because of it, some have decided that they don’t want to run for office again because of him and what he stands for. Doesn’t help that the younger members of the Democratic Party want to pull more to the left in response to everything but when they’re citizens and told to go back to their countries you can’t blame them for it. The Dems need to quit these impeachment proceedings (in a perfect world the things he has done are impeachable offenses) because the Republican Party and it’s members are too much of a pussy to oust the man who has caused a constitutional crisis and will continue to do so even if he gets voted out of office. We have a half a Democratic Party that wants to pass policy, another half that wants to go through impeachment hearings, and the whole Republican Party so busy trying to keep him in office they won’t pass any policy (see how they struck down a cyber security bill to protect our voting infrastructure) and a man in the Oval Office tearing the country apart and with it, our reputation across the world and even within our country
@@khub5660 considering that this game is all about how media influences us to think and feel certain ways with selective reporting, I'd say you're a classic example of this exact scenario. If the talking heads say "Orange man bad" enough times, it must be true, right?
OneBiasedOpinion if you reread what I said, I’m actually talking about the current political landscape from both points of view with a slight slant towards the left. The Republicans are never going to oust one their own no matter what because then they won’t be unified as a party. It’s sad because if a Democrat did what he and his campaign team did the Republicans would be outraged and calling for their head. Everyone involved in the Trump campaign fell with the exception of Trump because of the fact that it is against Justice Department policy to indict a sitting president, and for good reason. He is our president no matter what until he gets removed from office or voted out. Take this into consideration as well, people like Nunes have been spinning and twisting the events in this country to fit their own narrative as well, so it’s not like either side is innocent of this but when a “(what used to be) respectable and prominent news channel turns into a propaganda channel, that’s an issue and I don’t care which side of the aisle does it, it’s still a problem. This week I was ashamed to call myself an American because of the simple fact that the majority party, the Republicans, said no on protecting what makes a democracy a democracy, our voting institution. And that’s not what a talking head said, that is what happened on Capitol Hill this week even in light of new evidence that showed that other countries have attacked and will attack our voting infrastructure again. Both sides of the aisle are guilty of spinning the narrative to fit them but when it comes down it, the majority party still isn’t doing anything to move this country forward and the minority party can’t pull themselves together to try to force them to focus on policy instead of defending the presidents tweets
Mark kept saying, "square/circle hates square/circles." They headline reads, " squares/circles hate squares/circles." The headline is grouping every circle to hate every square. It makes everything black and white. There is no grey area.
Damn, this message was so strong. Would love to see more people's reaction to the game and it's message. Makes you really open your eyes on what's going on in our world.
I completely agree. The hard part about this game is that it points out a truth and the people that wish to do good in the world, the protesters of love, are ignored and can only witness the destruction. And like the camera told the player, "peace is boring" to the media. We need to come up with some kind of solution, as Mark says at the end. If we could somehow make the media and audiences cheer for the positive stuff that happens rather than glorify the terrible acts, then we could create a happier environment.
Not all politicians and corporations can be bad people. There has to be some that believe the same thing and want the best for everyone, but somehow feel limited or powerless. And if that is the case, then we the people should make a stance to change who is in power or not watch and follow the media that only perpetuates hate.
but saying all that it only takes one or two isolated incidents that get blown up to sway public opinion as the old saying goes a few bad apples spoils the bunch and that doesn't just apply to corporations
I remember watching this first time and my heart sank when it went to that scene ._. Just goes to show how society can be portrayed so simplistic yet so surreal
When I saw the gentleman, it was the second time so I was like "Sweet I can make hats cool again." I took the picture but it said hats still weren't cool, and then he shot the square rocker dude. :(
This game’s message is absolutely accurate with today’s society, this has been happening for years and years, it keeps going on to this day. This game shows us how anybody can believe anything from the media, nowadays people are so twisted and sick on the mind that they just want action and violence to happen instead of the good and positive thing to happen.”Peace is boring, Violence goes viral” is what this game is stating. People want others to suffer with toxicity, and cruelty and follow along with what other people do. Someone gets a new game, someone else follows, and then everyone else does. Someone likes a song, someone else follows them, and then everyone listens to the song at the very end. People like to follow what other people do as a way to not be left out and to keep up to date. The fact that at the end of the game where people that caused the violence were all killed because of how aggressive and mind controlled they were from the news/media, while the two people (circle and square with heart hats) that wanted peace were left to mourn and witness the death of all of their friends and family. That is why this game and message is called, We become what we behold, we become the things we witness happening around us...
"This game will leave you speechless" me: OK EITHER THIS GAME IS REALLY MESSED UP OR REALLY MEANINGFUL LETS GET READY TO CRY OR GET READY TO SHRIEK IN HORROR
This game does an excellent job in portraying this issue, and presents an angle that even people within this comment section fail to see. There are several noting what this says about News Media, but that completely misses the point. Never does it reference media corporations, but rather references us, the people on the internet. Notice that it does not use headlines, but hashtags. Furthermore, as it comes to a close, it shows that this has been us, on our laptop, the entire time. In trying to find something to go viral, we have created a problem that never was there to begin with. We did not even have to say anything, just picked and chose what parts of their world to show them. It must be noted, however, that there is also some responsibility to be placed on the characters in the game for the scenario that arises, as it is them who do or do not view your images. This is precisely what the title of the game says. In responding primarily to inflammatory images, these characters have guided you to set those images. In setting these images, you have guided the characters to live in these images. It is a responsibility carried by all parties to be conscious of what we show and how we show it, as well as what we respond to and how we respond.
The escalation is beautiful. First the game shows how the news can be influential with the hats. Then you can see how this influence can be harmful with the couple. Then you see a random crazy square, and it shows how sensationalism itself is harmful. Then a circle believes all squares are like this because, well, the news made it look like all squares are like this. And then the snowball begins.
What amazes me is how accurate to real life this is. What amazes me is how many people realise this. What amazes me is how many people commented about it. What amazes me is how many of those people Are still being manipulated like the circles and squares, And aren't thinking outside the television. It's amazing how bad that is.
Wow... I didn’t think I could feel worse about the situation lol. But seriously you’re right instead of talking about it being a thing though though we should be trying to stop it or something idk.
I showed by friends this game, and the look on their faces where absolutely priceless. It took a bit for them to figure out how to play, but it was worth it.
Maybe it symbolizes how the big stuff and the stupefying stuff kind of comes out of nowhere. Think about it: before someone shoots up a school, no one knows who you are, and no one cares. Then, as soon as you commit the heinous act, every good deed you have ever accomplished up to that point fades away. Even in the game, the "posh" circle just started a trend, but chances are, no one will remember that because he shot someone. That's my first theory. My second theory is that the "posh" circle symbolizes the sweet kid from down the street that always had the best grades and a good personality and was the last person you'd expect to do something like that.
Perhaps because he was the only one who realized where the problem originated? The happy square guy he killed was the angry square that started the hatred cycle in the beginning. The square guy became happy after he talked to the happy couple but he was still the origin of the hatred. He clearly changed as a person but the negative things he did in his past still had a huge negative impact on the people that surrounded him which eventually spread to even more people. Perhaps the "calm guy" is representative of people with warped logic. A smart individual that knows all the information about the situation but had a very twisted/biased view which caused them to to develop narrow minded solutions that only made the situation worse (aka killing a reformed individual for their past mistake). The "posh" look was probably to make the character stick out and showcase him as an intellectual (or a person that views themselves as intellectual anyways). "Smart" people have seriously suggested -and literally done- mass bombings or killings in the past (and present actually) to resolve issues just as meaningless as the one in the game - being a circle versus a square.
I think it's because the other shapes didn't do what they did because of hate; they did what they did because they were angry. They did what they did because they were afraid. The posh circle, likely a rich individual in this shape community, could afford to kill a shape not out of necessity, but out of pure unbridled HATRED.
i like the message, but when the game started i thought it was going to be one of those evolutionary things, where you take a picture of interesting things, and others start doing them, it would have been nice to see more factions of "people" in the game with different characteristics and "personalities" ... lol still, i like the message, the game is simple, clear, and powerful!
Trenton Streator I wish you could broadcast peace but because a lot of people tune more into violence, make it so that peaceful stories influence less people than violent stories.
I feel that certain people should play this game to see what the world has come to. I'm not going to say who, but they need to play it. This shows what media has done to form our society. This game developer has gone deep, to show what is wrong with our world. It brings me to tears to think of what people have to go through everyday. This shows it. That media can make or break our society. I may be repeating a lot, but I mean it. A single person could cause hell on Earth. Like the game shows. Spread the word. We Become what we Behold.
RealMartialNova So you blame the people being easily captivated by such things, but not the people who intentionally use this fact of human nature for personal profit, regardless of the consequences? You seem to be forgetting that the news media nowadays isn't an innocent messenger. It's littered with bias and agenda no matter where you look, and for pretty much any side of any issue you can think of. Sure, the susceptibility for people to get carried away with these things doesn't help, but it also wouldn't be as much of a problem if media outlets weren't so agenda-driven. There's blame to be shared across the board. Also, the way you portray it, the two in red in this game do not exist in reality. And I have to call bullshit there if that's something you intended to imply.
That simple phrase "be scared, be angry" speaks so much more than anyone could give credit. We as a species let this violence go rampid, we spread death and negativity for what. A dollar, clicks on a screen, to be know. How much farther will this go. Time will tell
@@atherapists3331 exactly. It is easier to hide behind hashtags and spout the good stuff than it is to make an actual change. Nobody wants to struggle through and make a change because it is hard to do. So we just keep telling ourselves that we are fine, when in reality, we are very far from fine.
Media before alerts u in stuffs and show u the trends. Now, its full of negativity. Its so sad that, that how it turned out.... The innocent dies.... Their family avenges them... If JUSTICE is what you call revenge, it will forever be a dark world. This game is only 5 minutes, but the lesson will take you 5,years to understand. This is some next level philosophical stuff...
@JustCallMeGlacier What you're saying is sadly true, media do has a part in the spreading negativity. Wordings play a big role in shaping information in order for it to be shown to or shared with other people. Which leads me to say, don't you think your passive aggressive way of showing your concerns could lead to negative thoughts in others. Rather than pointing out that there are 'many' people who do not care, why don't we all remind our selves of the people who do. And spare ourselves from that very negativity. Spread positivity.
@JustCallMeGlacier You're missing the point. I told you before that the fact is true, however, we are discussing that some ways of the media forms facts into something of negativity, which leads me to the way you're arguing a Correct fact of the matter (which was that there is much negativity being spread around people) in a way that also spread negativity. You are confused that this issue is either black or white but that's not the case. You could've instead said your concerns with a paragraph that starts with the issue (1. the press has the potential in spreading negatives), then suggestion (2. we should be more cautious and alert of the news that is shown to us), and then remind the good (3. since the bad is there we should then be good, so there will still be hope for the greater good) so that it will leave an end note of hope instead of hatred. .... That is what I was trying to say. I'm not disagreeing with anything your were arguing previously, but it seemed since I had focused on the brighter side without reminding the bad one triggered you.
Neat detail about this game, when a person is killed, they don’t just blow up into generic chunks, you can see the body is actually blurred, something modern media does all the time with bodies nowadays.
Alolamao this happened in the 90’s when blacks were being murdered by whites because blacks were deemed dangerous and not one of ‘them’ so out of fear white people would make blacks less than what they were and would also murder them.

We're out of new plotlines, we just recycle ones we already did with new characters to call the villains.
ppl are just saying that now because they think it gives them a reason to shit on the blm movement tbh
@@fern4753 ... I think it was much more general than the BLM movement. Mind Jan 6th. A lot of people were fully up the hole of “man, wild how things were allowed this time with minimal violence.”
While some backbit that as if those folks were claiming every protest should be synonymous with riot, the point (that apparently needed to be said, and was) was that escalation doesn’t _help_ any one side, and that those promoting it in _any_ group are... well, basically, the man with the gun, in this.
Whatever he got out of it goes unsaid (in real life, because it varies), but... hell, a phrase that’s been going around the past several months (that I’ve seen, for all I know it’s been around way longer) goes “so and so really just woke up today and chose Violence.” As a society, we’ve been holding tight to “story need CONFLICT” with a deathgrip, and keep going for the lowest of hanging fruit.

lol that's so cringe
That didn’t happen but ok
This is actually a good teaching ways, especially to fulfill free time during class, it does not courage violence but spreadin awareness of how dark things can turn despite our selfishness
I just wish you could get people to listen to the two guys vainly trying to stop the hate. I really feel bad for them.

Jace Gem Very wise, you are young one. In your hands the best future lies XD
Jace Gem I don't see the point of anger. When has it led to good things?

This game traumatized me when I was younger mainly because of what happened at 4:26 😭
Who knew that this game would almost accurately predict 2019’s political climate in the USA?
Gotta love the media
Mark kept saying, "square/circle hates square/circles." They headline reads, " squares/circles hate squares/circles." The headline is grouping every circle to hate every square. It makes everything black and white. There is no grey area.
That moment when he pulls out the gun, everyone stops
They’re probably realizing what they caused
Yeah man
It's the moment they realized they have passed a point of no return.
I just saw a short of a creator playing this game in 2024 so i had to come back and watch this bc it unlocked the memory of watching Mark play it
Damn, this message was so strong.
True.
but saying all that it only takes one or two isolated incidents that get blown up to sway public opinion as the old saying goes a few bad apples spoils the bunch and that doesn't just apply to corporations
I agree. Played on NG. "The _Spec Ops: The Line_ of Flash games."
I thought the exact same. "Yay, hats will be cool again. Everything will be alright... Oh no..."
It's starts with abolishing the republican party.

Well said, my good sir.

Im curious why the one who started the killing was not just an angry circle...but a posh calm circle.....
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Stole his hat thunder?
All these comments are too deep for me. You people are too smart.

@@therealswitt4554 he's right why should we care it's not like we can fix it
even awareness won't spread anything other than apathy

Oh my gosh thats true
The media wasn't ever good
I’m 14 and this is deeeeeep
This is scary because this is what's happening in the world now.
Last time I checked, people weren’t killing each other in a fearful rage
Also people aren’t that dumb this is overdramatized
@@alolamao833 we will tho. We will.
Alolamao the message went way over your head lmfao
Alolamao this happened in the 90’s when blacks were being murdered by whites because blacks were deemed dangerous and not one of ‘them’ so out of fear white people would make blacks less than what they were and would also murder them.
the killing is when the collapse happens
