Michael Keaton is the master of moving his entire upper torso with every move. Beetlejuice was expert physical comedy - every little head twitch and jolty movement. This dude's got underrated chops when it comes to PHYSICAL acting.

The suit is honestly very good in terms of design, they just didn't have the materials to make it work 100% like they wanted to. You believe that he's this supernatural entity living in the shadows of Gotham. Hell, even the characters make him like he's this urban legend or myth and it perfectly fits. Everyone else that turned their head looked really stiff or their head bobbled around like Clooney.

I wanna take this time to commend Ironhead Studios for unlocking the secrets behind the flexible batcowl for batfleck in BvS. Yes the TDK suit was the first to solve the stiff neck problem by making the cowl a separate headpiece, but the BvS cowl went back to the old school design and managed to make it flexible enough for the wearer to freely move his neck without making it a separate headpiece
Not only that, but I'll forever miss the grey/black BvS suit (with yellow-ish/gold belt) as it is the absolute most comic accurate batsuit we've ever gotten on film only for the next reboot to go back to black armor again since the dark knight. I will always be salty about that.

I wish more of the live-action Batman flicks after the 90s tried to replicate this otherworldy, gothic feel to Gotham. While the most recent Batman film was mostly grounded, I do appreciate how they at least added some style and neo-noir flair to its version of Gotham.

Such unique movements this costume made the actor perform. Usually, in Batman movies, they made him more lurking/agile, but this costume kinda gave him more of a robotic movement, almost robocop style, which I think is pretty unique for a Batman costume. Also made the movement much more dramatic, as a simple turn around really becomes well more over the top.
Robocop suit was worst of worst in movie history where it literally took hours for Peter Weller to get in to, but the movie turned out to be amazing, from what i have heard it was hard to see through predator mask as well,I’ll think even to breath but again another classic, fun fact i heard that for robocop 2014 keaton supposedly told the actor to settle down when he complained about his Robo suit given modern suits are way way easier to get into and handle compared to the old ones
@@techyrock there are so many horror stories about movie costumes (godzilla and cowardly lion also being examples) it makes me wonder if the costume designers knew how impractical the costumes would be, but made it anyway or if they got lost in the designing process and accidentally made stuff too heavy and disjointed.
@@techyrock basically the costumes were to heavy to move around and the movie lights made the set extremely hot, which caused the actors to pass out multiple times during filming. Also the stuff already mentioned, falling because it was hard to move, unable to breath under the mask, long time to put on and take off the costume, making break time shorter.
Honestly didn't notice but now that I do, I realize it just adds to the character. If he could have normal mobility, it would have made Batman feel less mysterious which interestingly enough, is something most of Keaton's successors have. The fact that he lacks mobility but turned it into something of a believable and dramatic character trait, is a mark of what makes this to this day, the most interesting Batman movie ever. Do you see Gotham? Modern NYC-like Gotham has nothing on the early movies.

Soooo cool. That rigid quality totally captured his own character trait of stone rigid discipline and stiff stubborn focus. Spock himself couldn't be more stoic! Genius film making choices, worked exactly.
IMO, Michael Keaton's inability to turn his neck in this Bat-suit and having to turn his body around or partially twist his torso added a bit extra to his Batman's personality, in a good way.
As uncomfortable as the suit might have been for Keaton, it is my favorite of all the suits so far. Edit: I also don't find this too odd. For me it only adds to the character. It gave him a peculiar characteristic. Back then I thought this was a conscious choice to make him look different. I actually like those movements.

You guys have got it all wrong, the rigidity of the "cowl".. The complete and total inability to turn his neck and head prevents any injury to his neck should he fall, get hit in the face hard, get in a car accident, ect ect.. it's like a built in neck brace collar to prevent a broken neck. You see guys, it's a feature, not a bug.

Keaton's Batman is still the most menacing. The Bat-Turn just makes him all the more frightening; this man in a batsuit who kicks the shit out of criminals, just quickly turning his entire body to stare you down.

I wish more of the live-action Batman flicks after the 90s tried to replicate this otherworldy, gothic feel to Gotham. While the most recent Batman film was mostly grounded, I do appreciate how they at least added some style and neo-noir flair to its version of Gotham.

The line Morgan freeman has “so you want to be able to turn your head” feels like a callback joke now.
Such unique movements this costume made the actor perform. Usually, in Batman movies, they made him more lurking/agile, but this costume kinda gave him more of a robotic movement, almost robocop style, which I think is pretty unique for a Batman costume.
Also made the movement much more dramatic, as a simple turn around really becomes well more over the top.

Robocop suit was worst of worst in movie history where it literally took hours for Peter Weller to get in to, but the movie turned out to be amazing, from what i have heard it was hard to see through predator mask as well,I’ll think even to breath but again another classic, fun fact i heard that for robocop 2014 keaton supposedly told the actor to settle down when he complained about his Robo suit given modern suits are way way easier to get into and handle compared to the old ones

it makes me wonder if the costume designers knew how impractical the costumes would be, but made it anyway or if they got lost in the designing process and accidentally made stuff too heavy and disjointed.

@@techyrock basically the costumes were to heavy to move around and the movie lights made the set extremely hot, which caused the actors to pass out multiple times during filming. Also the stuff already mentioned, falling because it was hard to move, unable to breath under the mask, long time to put on and take off the costume, making break time shorter.
From 0:11 to 0:18 I always loved how he’s ready to move but stops, the only way out is up and he’s prepared. Such a fun sequence

Honestly didn't notice but now that I do, I realize it just adds to the character. If he could have normal mobility, it would have made Batman feel less mysterious which interestingly enough, is something most of Keaton's successors have.
The fact that he lacks mobility but turned it into something of a believable and dramatic character trait, is a mark of what makes this to this day, the most interesting Batman movie ever. Do you see Gotham? Modern NYC-like Gotham has nothing on the early movies.

IMO, Michael Keaton's inability to turn his neck in this Bat-suit and having to turn his body around or partially twist his torso added a bit extra to his Batman's personality, in a good way.

Keaton made it work and look cool. It's a unique thing for his version. That's why he's the best Batman.
As uncomfortable as the suit might have been for Keaton, it is my favorite of all the suits so far.
Edit: I also don't find this too odd. For me it only adds to the character. It gave him a peculiar characteristic. Back then I thought this was a conscious choice to make him look different. I actually like those movements.
