How do you make the most of a short time in the pool? Do you focus on speed or technique? 🤔

Before COVID, short swims meant speed. After COVID, it’s either OWS or bike and run because our pools aren’t open yet (NYC).

A good (effective, efficient, economical) technique results to quicker sped with time.

We are having a lock-down here in Singapore and we are only limited to swim 50 minutes per day in public pools. I find that doing a pyramid swim is very useful. For example you can do 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 with 15 seconds rest each set and that would be 1500 meters, about 30 minutes if you are average swimmer. If you have more them, you can then continue with 400, 300, 200, 100 and that would be 2.5k swim!

good advice. i particularly like the bit about not skipping warmup/cooldown, a thing i'm notorious for doing, even when there is no time restraints. Not sure if you guys have done one, but a video that focuses purely on warmups/cooldowns for swim, bike and run, all in the same vid, would be something i'd be keen to watch.

The three most important things in swimming are technique, technique and technique.
The technique session given is fine but you do need to know why you're doing each point e.g. what are you aiming for when you scull? And why kick? Are you aiming to build kicking technique? Kicking endurance? Or (as I see a lot) just using it as an excuse for an easy time?

My Walmart trunks are the equivalent of a parachute. It takes me 40 minutes to swim 1600 meters.....
Update.... in the last 3 weeks, I've increased my swimming to 90 minutes daily. Same trunks.

No no no, this is nonsense. The best swimming workout you can get in 30 mins is being a trash swimmer (me) so it's not swimming, but what I call "surviving". You will hit ALL heart rate zones, be very exhausted, and probably feel it the next day... if you live. Remember what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk.

Thanks for your wise distribution of pace, from warming up to cooling down.
Could you please tell us about recovery/resting after a workout, I'm 70 now... and sometimes afterwards I become a bit sleepy 😴.... that sometimes I need to take a short nap.
Is it normal ? Or a premature decline of stamina.
    Cheers !

What exactly do you mean by swim? So for example, you say "25m as 10m Scull and 15m swim". What do you mean by "swim" here? Do you mean Front Crawl or something else?

    • @gtn

Why do all the swim workouts seem overly complicated with so many variations of speed and techniques. Wouldn't it be better and more simple to just to do what you might do with running and do say 100m intervals with rests in between. Or variations of that. I'm struggling to find a simple workout where I don't need equipment and having to change technique every length.

    What a bunch of nonsense.
    If you have 30 minutes.
    Warm up
Swim 1500m at race pace, concentrating on technique
    Cool down
    Hit the showers.
