This "guy" is Hirokazu Kanazawa who was taught directly by Gichin Funakoshi the founder of shotokan karate. I guarantee that he knows more about karate than you could hope to know in several life times considering he is the man largely considered to have popularized karate in the United States.
Hell, it brings tears to my eyes just talking about him...he was the kindest person, he taught Karate for FREE, he took kids out of the streets and gave them a purpose in life in his own Dojo. Taught them discipline, and all he asked in return was a notification that they were going to school...people like this don't exist anymore...I even used to help him at Saturdays with younger kids, he was the most pacient and gentle person, but on the same time he was one hell of a fighter...RIP Sensei FP!
What a memories... Those who are learning - practice kata even when you decide to quit karate. It's very good way to keep yourself in peace. I stopped doing it 12 years ago, and here I am now - returned back to the very basics, while at the moment I quit I knew all of them and was capable of performing every one of them one straight after another (had 1st dan and was eligible to try and pass exam to the 2nd).

This guy's technique is inspiring!

I took a two and a half years break from karate cuz of covid and I have my black belt second degree examination in a month, but it took me five years to get my black belt and seven for the second degree
@@ihategettingtermed6500 If you train at least three times a week you can get black belt in 3-4 years. It is actually a good amount of time to invest in any sport.
I got my black belt in 2004 and, while I have continued to practice off and on, my katas have gotten 'rusty' from disuse. This series is very helpful for me now that I'm taking time to polish my skills, especially having each one repeated twice at different speeds. Excellent!
Kata teaches you to do basic movements until they become muscle memory. No one will fight using the exact kata but a good fighter will fight using the movements taught by the Kata. Perform this a few thousand times and next time you need to use Uchi Uke or Zuki Gamai in a real fight you will not hesitate. This Sensei is performing the kata for the beginners, stopping between every specific step. At his level he can also perform it and make it look just like Tai Chi with very fluid movements.
Thanks for being the only reliable consistent Shotokan karate channel! This may be the first Shotokan kata, but it remains a lot harder than it looks, as in most Shotokan it is required during black belt testing.
I earned my white belt at the age of 12 and stopped going bc of family. Definitely going to practice to what I had already learned. So much nostalgia, thank god for the internet. Great video beautiful form

I love watching Shotokan Karate because it really shows how much Moo Duk Kwan, the martial art I practice, is influenced by it. Most of the forms in Moo Duk Kwan are from Shotokan and its great to see where they originally came from.
Unlike what most people think nowadays, a well trained Karate fighter can easily take down a MMA fighter with one or two blows. MMA is based on muscle and strenght, while Karate can turn the smallest person into the greatest warrior. One of my biggest mistakes in life was leaving Karate, but not a day goes by that I don't remember my favorite Sensei Fernando Pinto that passed away, that man taught me so much...he wasn't just a Master, he was a friend...a true friend that helped a lot of people.
I learned this when I was 10 years old and I stopped 6 years ago when I got my brown belt in age of 17 , and i'm 23 years old now, wow I feel it, its like yesterday!!
Guys guys, Karate is not about fighting, it's a way of life. My sensei always told us the best way to win a fight is to win without fighting at all. Karate is about harmony, balance , peace and control in all spheres of your life. Cutesy and politeness are the hallmarks
Now with the internet especially TH-cam, such help when learning the movements of various katas. I'm a Kyokushin practitioner and our kata Pinan Sono Ichi highly resembles Heian Shodan but with subtle differences.
Shorin-Ryu for me, and this looks like a cross between Fukyugata Ichi and Pinan Shodan. It goes to show the bones of Karate all come from the same origin, and there's not as much different as people might think.

@scraffen1 They're used in techniques as well...one has to keep in mind they were BUILT for a very different period, wide sturdy stances helped largely in maintaining stability in wet ground such as rice fields. I'm also of the mind that a lot of these techniques are often more than what they seem. A genius creating a fighting art wouldn't waste time "setting up" for a low block for example, the same movement could easily be a wrist lock and break, or neck break followed by a block or takedown
A high block can just as easily be a forearm to the jaw/face, the low block could actually be the end of a throw, and many more practical applications/bunkai.
+Tim Schmeiss so?! ...training the night before a belt is not the best way to learn karate, this is not a chemical class... but i still hope you did it.. :)
I'm working on this kata to get my yellow belt too. People who have never done Karate have no idea how hard it is. I NEVER thought it would have been this hard. It's all about technique.
That's the problem with modern karate-do. People are learning the kata for a level up. Everyone wants that black belt but it doesn't mean anything. A black belt used to mean you were a master. You were fit to teach people karate to its full potential. And to have the know how to know who was fit for that belt. Now you buy your black belt. I'm guessing everyone on here with one got theirs roughly around two to two and a half years in? Learn the moves, learn the names, pay the bill and get your belts. Its sad. I'm not shit talking anyone on here. I'm very proud of all of you and glad you are training. I'm just giving you a few bits of advice. Train hard. Train with your entire body mind and spirit. Study sensei funakoshi's 8 important phrases, and 20 precepts. Make them your bible, whatever your style of kara te. And remember that the color of your belt means nothing. There will never be a lower feeling than when you get handed that belt and realize you don't know half of what you always thought you would when you felt it around your waist. Its a matter of time not skill. The skill lies in you and like everything else, what you sow, you will reap............ Anyway!! Happy training everybody! Amituofo :-)

Yes I believe this demo was made for instructional purposes, considering he does it twice at regular speed and move-by-move. It makes me laugh how some people judge the abilities masters like Kanazawa Sensei on tapes like these..."Oh he's too slow, no speed, kiai is weak, blah blah..." He's a teacher for goodness sake, he's supposed to slwo it down for beginners! Karate is not about you being the best and getting yours, it's becoming good enough to help others get theirs too.
@scraffen1 One big misunderstanding about the stances come from the fact that there is no visible opponent. This leads people to think erroneously that the stance is were technique begins when in actuality the stance is were the technique finishes. For example it is common in boxing and many other arts to step to the left diagonal when throwing a right cross or overhand right. This transfers body weight into the punch and when the foot touches the ground looks just like zenkutsu dachi! :)
It's done properly -- front leg is bent at the knee, 90 degrees with the knee and toes parallel. For some people, this creates a lower stance, higher for others.

Shotokan karate is a way of life like the first guy said. It teaches you discipline and camaraderie. Learning how to defend yourself just comes with it all. It's not about violence like most of the stereotypes.
im learning gendai shotokan karate. its very similar but with a modern twist to take account of this day of age fighting. im only white belt but loving it all! and feel experienced already!!
I believe that this kata is the foundation for all of shotokan, and not just because it is the first heian. If you can master this kata, you have mastered the basic body mechanics of shotokan. The tekkis are also necesary to master kibi dachi. I agree. If you move your foot in an arc, on the turn, you lose power to the side and its not efficient, and it makes a person off balance. The crossing needs to be tight.

@@20021redturle oof, i actually took karate classes when i was 5 and didn't really get any belt cuz at that time i didn't really care about karate. If i didn't quit karate at that timr, i could've been a black belt by now since im 12. yea, i know, really sad
@@20021redturle my test is today and after practicing, i think im ready
Just got my yellow belt recently. This demonstration helped me to tighten up my kata. Next up, Heian Nidan.

Well, you gotta practice then mate :D
Shotokan karate is a way of life like the first guy said. It teaches you discipline and camaraderie. Learning how to defend yourself just comes with it all. It's not about violence like most of the stereotypes.

I never fully appreciated how he perfectly ends up in the same starting point. How many times has he done this I can only imagine
Just learned this kata today. I was having trouble with the order of the knife hands. Thanks
Nice kata sir I dropped my prectis 20 years but Today I filling start to kata and kumite I love both of
