A Burst of Deep Sea Fireworks: Halitrephes Jelly | Nautilus Live

- We're starting this year with deep sea fireworks, and a spirit of exploration! When something remarkable floats by in the middle of sampling operations, our team quickly switches gears to marvel and document.
The frilled tentacles of the Halitrephes maasi jelly came into view at 1225m in the Revillagigedo Archipelago off Baja California, Mexico. Radial canals that move nutrients through the jelly's bell form a starburst pattern that reflects the lights of ROV Hercules with bright splashes of yellow and pink--but without our lights this gelatinous beauty drifts unseen in the dark.

It's comforting to me to know that somewhere in the deep, vast ocean, one of these is just floating around and existing.
I didn't even know this was a species!
...kinda like me in these covid times!! Except I'm ugly and just floating around in my living room! xD
@@MusicFromTheOm that's not comforting at all
I'm in tears, this is the kind of creature that makes me want to be a marine biologist, absolutely fantastic and there's so much still to be discovered
I love your passion :)
@YSN KOÇ I love how fairytales are still being used to explain natural occurrences. rotfl It's like seeing the stone age firsthand.
@YSN KOÇ Stehpen Hawking hatte nach eigener Erkenntnis geäußert : Es muß wohl ,,doch" einen Gott geben . . . 💫 Gott sei alle Ehre u Dankbarkeit..
I think most people don’t understand what was fixin to happen…!
We need to dump this nuclear waste in the oceans.
Love how bummed out they were when they had to stop observing the jellyfish. The pure joy and fascination of the work they do is what I hope to achieve in my own career.
Yea, and I feel like they could have totally watched it for another minute or two!
i mean it is really cool to see something like that, especially something so colorful in the ocean, it looks almost like its wearing neon lights haha!
Good luck to you ✌️
it's great that we get to hear it! there is a whole generation of scientists who need that taste of reality, this is the job of dreams and I'm sure it's no cakewalk!

That jellyfish is going to go tell all his friends about the UFO he saw and they'll say, "you crazy".
More like UDO. D for diving lol
The submarine is not floating on a surface. It is diving beneath the surface. But your joke is valid also.
Submarines are basically underwater airplanes
You mean USO? Unidentified Swimming Object
Don't think so that jellyfish don't have eyes.

This being seems to be in peace at the dark bottom of the oceans. Sometimes I wish I could be like it.

Seriously Who needs Space when we have these mysterious creatures RIGHT HERE on earth!!
To me, the marine realm, is without a doubt the most fascinating, awe inspiring and alien places on earth. A world within a world, evolution in motion, grace and beauty suspended in brine, living fossils and brand new species, existing side by side in possibly the oldest ecosystem on the planet 💙
I can't believe this is not CGI, that looks so surreal!
exactly the reason I hate aliens being portrayed as humanoids, such a lack of creativity. This jelly fish looks like it could come from the methan seas of Titan.
@@ChangoGestor well i mean, most animals outside of the water have a very similar structure, gravity etc exists they cant just magically look like theyre floating through the air

It actually looks like a creature you would see on earth because it is real and it's not a game....
Andrew Givens wow, you're right, thanks for the insight, dickweed
I dont believe subnautica has any jellies, kind of a bummer really. That game could have some awesome critters if they put forth the effort. (been a while since I played last)

The Nautilus Live project is so incredible. I never would have seen these images if not for your team!
"Awww do we haaaavee toooo" breaking my heart! 5 more minutes dad!
Why is his reply, "Trust me I'm a mid-water guy?" If they are on the bottom of the ocean wouldn't that mean he's completely not sympathizing with their desire to see more of this jelly?
NO he is acknowledging their disappointment at getting back to work for the job at hand ( get the crab sample) . As a mid water guy he would love to stay and study the jelly
Who really cares bout a crab when this is in front of U?
That’s the unfortunate part they are more then likely doing research and can’t spend their whole day following some of the other amazing creatures they stumble across... like this jelly :(
that's exactly what I was thinking, and then I saw your comment
Probably because it way easier to spot a fish that literally glows instead of tiny crab that most likely blends with background.
Deep sea creatures are underrated. I’d love to see these in video games.
The beauty that was put into every aspect of sea life always astounds me. I never would have known this jelly and all the other creatures existed had it not been for EVNautilus....So thank you very much.
"bruh where's my contact lens?"
Haha, lmao... 😂
He was definitely looking for something
Glad I'm not the only thought of contact lenses or eyes upon seeing that jellyfish.
What an amazing creature.
It's amazing the camera quality we can get of these amazing sea creatures. If it waa wasn't for these researchers we would have never seen them in our whole lives

Normally deep sea isn't my thing (phobia) so I avoid looking at stuff down there but this might be the most beautiful art I've ever seen. Its hard for me to wrap my head around how something so colorful and artistic (I can't get over how well defined the coloring is!) can justifiably exist without an audience. Its so beautiful.
nature's cool like that, making such beautiful forms with living organisms, not for any particular audiance in mind, but just because. And look deeper into it and an organism's beautiful looking form has some reason to exist, to help it adapt to it's environment, like flowers that attract polinators with their patterns, color an scent. Wonder what in particular this jelly's color and pattern do for it, if anything significant to it's species' survival?
@Sarr Cat.....ikpts' thoughts were articulately and beautifully expressed from the heart, and do not necessitate "correction" by way of a dissertation on darwinism . Thank you.
It also makes a sound when no one is around to hear it.
Sarr Cat yeah & there’s also specific numbers in nature, that’s why the jellyfish looks to have a certain pattern, everything in nature is designed accordingly it uses fractals & different shapes to form bigger life forms it’s just crazy man lol
I could stand to just watch this beautiful jelly exist for 3 hours to some relaxing music. Absolutely breathtaking
Freankin' marvellous !!! Look at those colours !!!! 🤩
I agree with the, "Oh maan!" sentiment at the end. Just gorgeous.
"Oh mannn.." The disappointment when they heard they need to get a sample.
*Of a crab. Not the jelly.*
The helitrephes is, without a shadow of a doubt, the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
I felt a dreamlike otherworldliness when I watched this for the first time ❤
Nature showcasing just a fraction of it's beauty. Stunning display of colour.
I've just seen a work of art. but it's actually a living organism.. its almost to pretty to believe it's a real creature!

This is a dumb question but is the crew above water commenting on live action or is the crew in the vessel?
No dumb questions here! We're onboard a ship in a mission control, where our team sits to pilot remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) with cameras. The voices you hear are ROV pilots, video engineers, navigators, scientists, interns and educators guiding the expedition. More here: nautiluslive.org/tech

Beautyfull creatures what nature has made. Wonderfull designs and colors. If we had to fantasize to create one we could not do such a variaty. It is above our imagination!
no alien life anywhere in the universe can look much more crazy fantastic and "alien" than this.
I was about to say that. Now any alien life w'd only look so lame.
Just imagine what things are hidden beyond our reach, Life is so beautiful.
we still haven't explored the waters of Europa, an all-water planet. don't get too impatient!
Your very arrogant to assume that. There could be infinite other life forms you couldn't imagine. Very bold of you to assume this is as alien as it can get. This is on our world. Could you imagine what these other worlds could have? Life you couldn't even imagine in your tiny brain because your so arrogant. Be open to all possibilies. The universe may be infinite. As beautiful as this creature is there most definately are ones more alien than this somewhere on another world.
