Thanks for explaining at 00:55 that light is the most efficient way for these organisms to communicate at depth. I was never sure why bioluminescence was prevalent in the deep sea before, but makes complete evolutionary sense why it exists.
I don’t understand how anybody can think this world is boring. Granted, human society can be lame sometimes, but there’s just so much wonder here on this earth
Positively stellar captures and footage. Utterly fascinating and mesmerizing! I hope you all find what you're looking for and continue to share these beautiful videos! Thank you!
@CoolGamer Jr Nature does not create because it is not conscious. In fact, evolution, the big bang - all of it is happenstance. You can not get something from nothing, nor can you get order from disorder.
@tryphena rose also all of the laws of the universe. Something had to create them. How do laws form naturally such as the speed of light and endless other laws of physics. If even one of them was a fraction different the universe would be chaos.
That’s probably not it’s name. Also, they have to use their own footage, or they have to pay to use it. The jellies that have the shimmering rainbow streaks down the sides aren’t actually glowing. That shimmer is caused by their combs refracting the bright lights of the submersibles (hence their common phylum name, “comb jellies”. Occasionally, you can see that shimmer from the sun if they’re near the surface on a sunny day (there are many species of comb jellies).
Just came from the MB Aquarium lecture on bioluminescence. I’ve been going to the MBA for decades and was disappointed to see how the lecture quality has fallen. When I came across this video I was so relieved. The lecture at MBA talked down to the audience as if we were all toddlers, anthropomorphizing to the extreme (complete with storybook style descriptions) and provided hardly any actual information. The last third of the lecture was wasted on politics which could’ve been better discussed in their own session. Thank you MBARI for providing actually educational videos.
Good luck as I've considered there's much opportunity with these research areas. This is among my interests too even distinguishing bioluminescence beside phosphorescent, fluorescent, & the symbiosis often involving microbes, virus, & algae!
Thank you, Mr. Haddock! You are one of a handful that have practically written the book on bioluminescence. I have a few questions for you, if that's OK.. First, that's a fascinating bit about the Gossamer worm... so do all _Tomopteris_ emit yellow light? How about organisms within _Tomopteridae?_ Also, I know you said you don't know why they produce yellow light, but surely you at least have some guesses? Last, why are freshwater systems basically devoid of bioluminescence? If you don't know for certain, I'm happy to hear any hypotheses.
Incredibly beautiful and so informative. Better than a firework display. The diversity of life on this planet, especially the ocean, never ceases to amaze me
His name is Haddock. Like the fish. I love it. It's like if a dentist has the last name Pearly or White. Bet he's heard it all. And yes, the video was awesome.
I ordered some Pyrocystis Fusiformis about a week ago, and was super surprised to this video released about the same time. MBARI set up an ROV program at my middle school in Salinas, I would love to work for you guys. Maybe once I get my CS bachelors finished lol.
That's what I love in deep sea, there is no giant monsters from nightmers yet to be found, but bizarre and interesting creatures that we are still studying.
Steve: Is possible to copy this type of bioluminiscence for the dairy live in our houses?...Why nobody is doing this?, Not is ecological? or not there is sufficient knowledge for to reproduce this light artificially? This emits a tenuous velvety light so beautiful without comparation with something in the Earth.. Always I was waiting for someone that explore and developed this beautiful light because I think that the deep sea have so much for to show and to teach us, and not have the right attention that deserve in importance. I feel happy of to find someone working in this, thank you for his thrilling work and description!!... Only one thing more, where do you walk and the water is luminescent in his feet and in the waves???,,,I never seeing this in some place of this World, why this is?!!,,,TY...✍️⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐✌️🌌
What sort of human technologies might research in bioluminescence lead to? Are there any particular fields that your research is geared towards gathering information for in terms of human use?
Hmmm....as terrifying as the ocean depths could be, still, the visual perception is likely akin to a night sky filled with fireworks- without the flash and sounds that is😊
humans have this light within them....Deep within the recesses of our souls lies our true spiritual nature... Every person has infinite potential lying dormant within their soul that is only awakened through meditation and contemplation..
maybe the reason why gossamer worms have yellow light is due to the same reasons as to why fireflies have that as well? idk but i love this magical video, thanks for sharing!
Video yang bagus, bagaimana caranya agar saya bisa menggunakan beberapa klip dari video anda, saya membutuhkan untuk pelengkap TH-cam saya, mohon jawabannya 😊 Terimakasih
Seven colours of rainbow in blue sky are similar to deep blue sea critters emmiting colours i guess. A rainbow is a meterological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction & dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of muticoloured 'arc'. Maybe bioluminiscent creature emmit colours for same reason. Sky is blue. Ocean is blue. Mother nature is very similar in its execution of things.
Stunning. Thank you for sharing. Are fireflies the only organism that do this on land? (I used to call them "fly-a-flies" when I was a young kid. We'd catch them in a jar, then let them go. Dumb, I know.
There are other land-dwelling species that glow too, mostly invertebrates like glow worms and some types of click beetles, as well as certain fungi. I used to catch and release fireflies as a kid too.
On dark nights we would see porposes swimming in the high pressure zone of the bow of our boat triggering a shell of phosphorus dot around thier bodies. Im wondering if the diving subermersable have been able to observe fish finding prey at depth using the trails of light. Also we caught a very fresh grenadier once that gave off light from the outer circle of its eyes. Spent 14 yrs black cod fishing in Alaska
Oh the red crown jelly is intelligent enough to evolve his alarm burglar bioillumenescence so when being preyed on it calls on 3rd part predator to prey on its predator. I love evolution
I tried hanging a Christmas bulb off my head the last time I hit the pool at the Iguana Arms Motel pool in Palm Beach. You'd be amazed how quickly security came.
These Creatures are like jewels and yet so much more precious than can be imagined . The Wonders of Nature and the Stunning array of Living Things that God has fashioned fills me with abounding joy .
That red crown jelly in the vid and thumbnail, lighting up, makes me think of an afterburner of a jet engine lit up. Sorry 'bout that but that's how my mind works.
These creatures are ON our planet. Not on some other more exotic celestial body, but HERE. Truly awesome, as the word is defined.
Fake news.
@@grunge-616 Bait
Our planet IS exotic, we just got so numbed down & dumbed down with routine lives that we don't see it anymore
Really thought this was on Uranus
@@octopushands6923 Nah, they're on yours.
Thanks again to Steve Haddock for the illuminating conversation!
Must be an inside joke.

The deep sea exhibit you all have at the aquarium is truly awe inspiring. So happy you're able to bring these amazing creatures to us
Uneducated nonsense these are not creatures primate
Incroyable beauté. Spectacle époustouflant et fascinant de la nature. Merci pour ces images sublimissimes
Great video. Interesting, informative and very beautiful at the same time - those jellyfishes look like living jewelry!
Hopefully a lot more to discover. Nature is so amazing.
Points all to the beauty of the Creator.
@@tryphenarose384 I agree 👍

How could you not talk about the RGB Gamer Jelly? Literally the GOAT bioluminiscent organism.

Yes, replace street light and lightbulbs with bioluminescence. Reduces light pollution and unravels the night sky with stars.

Is this a reupload? It's so familiar! 🤗
What I want to know is how they ..
infact produce the light......
What is in the fish to make....
this happen ?????
Our new Bioluminescence resources web page has some great information on the topic: www.mbari.org/bioluminescence/
Luciferin + luciferase, some fish produce it and some get it eating animals
Bioluminescence is real life magic 😊
How do they produce light in pitch darkness?
Very nice

Is bioluminescence related to luciferase and green fluorescent protein synthesis ?
Gorgeous whatever the purpose. I guess we all need light.
amazing
Steve!
So that UFO in the sky was actually just a Jellyfish 💀
How can I produce light like that?
Did you know that you already do it? But it is a very very very small intensity light that nobody can see
Use a flashlight

@nanajp because???
The beginning looks and sounds like Seventies "Doctor Who."
We live on Pandora
The reason why they are yellow is that maybe they use another chemical formula unlike most bioluminescence-creating animals. It’s my theory.
