Jellyfish single handily defies almost everything we understand of life and living organisms. It's a living creature, but lacks a brain, almost entirely composed of water, yet sleeps, learns, and an effective hunter (namely the box jellyfish that has good eyesight, actively follows and kills its prey). Very interesting creature that we should study more.
i firmly believe we should be exploring the oceans depths more than spending money on space exploration. something around 98% of the earth's ocean is undiscovered. there is where we will find the key to technology far beyond our understanding; now. i am so fascinated by the galaxy beneath the sea.. i used to live in the florida keys, and have spent the majority of my life on the coast of maine. the sea is something very dear to my heart and i could go on and on about the possibilities.
@@the_real_max_level Totally agree. I've spent my whole life by the sea, either in the UK or Australia. I can't imagine not being by the water, and not spending my free time under the waves. It pains me to think of how little effort we put into ocean exploration. We've never built on the legacy of the Conshelf and Sealab. Only Aquarius is left these days, and even that's been left to a single university to support. It's such a waste of opportunity, such a lack of curiosity and vision.
@Audial Asphyxiation Precisely what I was going to say. I’ve seen some truly wonderful footage on TH-cam of jellyfish (for instance on EVNautilus) but this is top-notch. It’s almost 2020 & only 1.3 K likes (!!)
True it’s showing how dumb humans became and the whole world interests are at Instagram.. people watching cgi nature trough a VR.. while we can enjoy the beauty of earth
All animals, including the jellyfish, ctenophores, and salps featured in this video, as well as all extant life on earth that uses RNA/DNA to encode genetic information, is descended from a common ancestor. But that shouldn't make the sheer diversity across the tree of life any less amazing and inspiring!!
This video was wonderfully informative, fascinating, and beautiful to watch. Thank you for providing us with such quality footage and for the work you do on sea jellies!! 💖🌞
I’m just about to go to college and have been looking at majoring in marine biology- this video has inspired me and I’m that much sure it’s what I want to do
Whenever i watch these videos they always end too soon. The brilliance of nature knows no bounds it seems. My eyes are unable to capture enough 'visual calories' to keep up with their seemingly unlimited ability to form moving diaphanous structures that defy any abstract sculpture I've ever seen. It makes me feel crudely inept to their beauty and mystery. The fact that we as a species continue to poison the environment is insanity . That and killing anything in our path in search of seafoods over fishing is immoral. But then just look at how we treat each other. May god protect us.
You are an amazing scientist sir. It also appears that you are an amazing Father and are blessed to have such a cute and brilliant child that is already excited about learning about life on Earth. Thank you for your hard work. We hope you and your family are are during these tough times. Keep up the hard work.
It just struck me - there are so many creatures that live their entire lives without ever having experienced sunlight. Pretty mind blowing. God's creativity in His creation is extraordinary!
i dont usually comment on youtube vidoes but i felt like this video deserves a comment from me. This is really amazing. scratch that.... this is fascinating!!! I really enjoyed hearing this guy talk about ~jellies~ these organisms are very unrepresented in the animal society :(
God I love ocean life, especially jellyfish. It’s so fascinating to see how stuff survives and how so many creatures are still hardly understood and challenging many of the ideas about life. And so much isn’t even discovered yet, it’s insane, Every time I think I’m over my obsession I find videos like this and it comes right back haha, if it weren’t for my grades (especially in biology freshman year) I would be more likely to go with marine biology instead of Graphic design. At least I can hope to spread information through the design work tho!
Watching these jellyfish reminds me of some types of UFOs... What if there is a UFO that were borg-like, similar to both a marine animal and a flying machine? And it's bioluminescence is why we only see certain lights in a shape with a void in-between, it's ability to create light is tricking our eyes...this ability could be used like a cloaking device.
Great video. I'm only confused about one thing. At 2:26 he says we don't know what genes or chemicals make their bioluminescence and then at 4:18 he said they cloned the gene in the early 80's to support scientific advances.
me too but at the same time it makes me sad.i wouldnt want to be captured by aliens that then study and kill me while iam just living my everyday life.
It is interesting that several jellyfish have several appearances and the fact that some jellyfishes are living in deep sea is truly interesting. -10723
Seeing these makes you wonder about life and creation. Why would life evolve in this way? It hardly seems possible that it is an accident, or to say it is merely an accident is to miss the point.
you know if I was a fish and encountered one of these beautiful creatures... I'd be dead in less than 5 seconds because goddamn they are beautiful and beautiful things attract me
I thought SOME of this bioluminiscence is more reflecting light through the spectrum like a prisma than actively glowing? Like the Ctenophora ?!? Gonna have a look in this again now...
Aloha, I got stung during a full moon on my torso under my ribs; the bruise was completely circular, the size of a fist. I had no pain. The bruise lastly for about a year and then faded away. I have always believed it was a jellyfish. I felt it on me and we completely, what we were doing and got out of the water? Do you have any thoughts?
1 Coríntios 15:41 O sol tem o seu próprio brilho; a lua, outro brilho; e as estrelas têm um brilho diferente. E mesmo as estrelas têm diferentes tipos de brilho.
a few question that comes to mind is why would a jellyfish even bother developing and under what circumstances created these "light" genes?. Its not like they have eyes or other sensors to detect these "lights"?. Only reason is not beeing eaten I guess since its a common thing in nature to develop strong colors like the butterfly or frog.
Many jellyfish have simple clusters of light sensing neurons in pigment spots at the base of their tentacles that detect basic differences in light, but these are not used for communication or forming images. Box jellyfish actually have more complex camera eyes with retinas and lenses that have evolved independently from other animals with similar eyes, like us, likely because box jellies evolved in shallow waters where it's important to be able to navigate around obstacles. Their eyes may also be important for hunting prey. But I think you're right, that bioluminescent displays by jellyfish and ctenophores are less for communication and more for mesmorizing/distracting/confusing potential predators.

I can’t believe my eyes right now... I’ve never seen anything like this. This is amazing. Breathtaking.
Seeing this I can imagine life developed two times separately on Earth.
Isnt it even more crazy that we all have the same ancestor as the jellyfishs in that video?

Ye, their IQ is like 0 but they still are amazing
it probably did great point of view
We can only imagine how much life can just change in the future

Good video quartz. Also this guy needs to make a jellyfish book for kids and a table top book for adults.
This was amazing but I felt very sad for the jellyfish that got sucked into the tube.
