This Performance of Shostakovich's 8th symphony is just outstanding. I must say, Teodor Currentzis did a marvelous job in conducting this. The more I listen to Shostakovich's music, the more convinced I am that he was a genius. I know he would have been proud of this performance. Thank you so much for uploading this concert for all to enjoy.
Fabulous work!! Never had heard of Currentzis (my bad) but became a fan, now. Hats off to the SWR too. Fantastic sound. Before watching (hearing) this film I had patiently seen (heard, one hour and a half) the one of the rehearsing of the 1st movement (LAB) of this piece. I can understand why another viewer (notarbolz926) calls Currentzis style interventionist. Stopping the orchestra every 30 seconds or so to change or modulate some thing must be wearisome to the musicians but the fact is that in a group of more then a hundred musicians, each one of them must have and idea how things should sound and that has to be, well, unified , if not...and Currentzis is very demanding. Every musician in this orchestra is "top gun" but the woodwinds... what a show! The piccolo, the bassoon, the flute... If you don't have the time, the patience or the taste for this kind of music at least hear the 2nd and 3rd movements. Just 12 minutes you will never forget.

Intense performance! Please tell us we're getting a Currentzis/SWR Shostakovich cycle. Orchestra and conductor seem perfectly suited for the composer's aesthetics.
They're performing the 13th right this week! Hopefully it will be recorded as well. Sadly, as this is Currentzis' last season with the SWR, I think there's no option for an entire cycle.
Wonderful performance! This introduced me to the conductor, Teodor Currentzis. A new favorite! Also, regarding the symphony itself, I love the woodwind fun @31:30-32:25

Good grief! What have I just listened to? Shostakovich as he should be played. That's what I just listened to. What a unique performance. I have only seen Teodor Currentzis superbly directing Mozart's piano concerto #20 on period instruments in Vienna. What a contrast this is! Thank you for portraying so well Shostakovich's lament about World War II not being the victory over fascism that the rest of the world thought it was going to be. (For Stalin was way worse than Hitler). Fantastic performance and a great video which, for once, did not sycophantly concentrate on the conductor at the expense of the rest of the instrumental playing. Again, thank you for bringing such majestic music to the public in such an authentic manner.
You should realize a complete Shostakovich cycle with Currentzis. This live concert is absolutely mindblowing. The best Shostakovich 8th I've ever heard since Haitink Decca legendary recording with the Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

The prsonal moods of Chostakovitch interfered with his reactions to the kind of life he had to suffer in a complex and quite attractive way. This 8th symphony was written between the "Leningrad" 7th and the 9th, rather light and joyful when officials were waiting for a massive song of triumph celebrating the victory. This 8th symphony anticipates the mood of the 10Th and the desolated or sarcastic mood of hid last works. The rendering is splendid.
