The 8th is perhaps the symphony in Shostakovich's oeuvre that most clearly expresses the composer's almost paranoid fear of the omnipotence of Stalinist rule. There is only a brief positive mood here, which is immediately replaced by a sense of being rushed. Even the scherzo is so deceptive and almost cheerful that listening to it - especially the first movement - creates a sense of unease that never once lets go of me. A true masterpiece.
Great Interpretation. The editing is art by itself even if not liked by all as a concept. One cannot ignore the effort (and the star-trek style creativity) in interpreting the music through images. Semyon Bychkov, as always, so clear, precise with musical and intellectual balance. The orchestra follows with bravura and engagement. A pleasure!
Just want to say these WDR/Bychkov Shostakovich series in the 2000s have a great camera work in terms of capturing the important moments of individual instruments. We can see that the editors have a thorough understanding of the scores. But I must say that some visual effects are making audiences feel dizzy.
The video editors need to realize, not as much here, that the music doesn't need any help. All we need and want to see is how it's done. Symphonic videography should help reveal the performance mystery, never seek to entertain on its own. When the orchestra members are cued to smile at each other is when I turn it off, I don't care how good it is, it isn't any good if they have to do that when playing.
It's part of the modern tradition to never let 5 seconds go by without an editing effect - either a cut or a zoom. Anything. I fail to see how sudden close-ups of any individual group or player add anything to the music. I suppose it proves that the editor/producer can read a score. What it means is that someone is making musical decisions for the listener/viewer. Not necessarily a good thing. I suspect that the video-makers just can't resist - when you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Truly a fantastic, exciting and at times scary piece of music. It makes me think of persecution and the horror of gulags. This is my favorite Shostakovich symphony. The playing and interpretation are on the spot perfect. Plus, the videography is absolutely fascinating. All of this performance is a great sample of orchestral music and playing. I'd recommend this video as a great example to show students who are learning about art music as it shows the relationship between the music and musicians. The bucolic touch, tinged with melancholy of this symphony causes an abyssal diving movement in my subconscious so that I end up feeling apathy before the problems, not as an escape but as an exercise of self-knowledge 🔥

Some investigations says that this symphony was written in 1943, it means still during the second world war, and the continuation of the 7th the famous "Leningrad " symphony, it is more a introspective battle in the soul of the composer, it is the first time I hear it, and it has been a new great experience for me, the resistance continues and it seems not to have an end . It has some musical elements of the 5th. Great symphony and very good interpretation.
It is absolutely one of Shostakovich's greatest and profoundest works. I am fortunate to have discovered it in my teens, and fifty years later it remains a searing emotional journey.
I love the video effects. For those who don´t: It IS possible to hear music without looking! Ask Stevie Wonder... This is a great performance no matter you watch and/or just listen. Be happy it exists.. many excellent recordings of it exist. Kitajenko with Gürzenich, Cologne, is a very good one, too.

The audiovisual world is also an art, although not as prestigious, with a short history, so those few years that have elapsed (since 2001) that are almost nothing in the classical musical tradition, are a long time in terms of evolution of audiovisual language, not so much in what can be done technically as in what is recognized as suitable for the music it serves. We see that they try to reinforce the elements of the music itself by transplanting them to the video (tempo, rhythm, character). It seems that time has not passed in favor of this type of language (certainly redundant), but I personally appreciate it, if only to see something different in that stagnant and often deliberately immobile and dogmatic world of classical music, with its inevitable etiquette and its "do's" and "don'ts".
Well yes, something like that also happens with the sets in the opera, which we need to change often, to respond to passing tastes, fashions, while the music is still there, the same or almost. Even so, I still see this 'document' as something more than that, it seems to me that the message of the music is clearly reinforced, despite some occasional moments, perhaps somewhat exaggerated (but isn't Shostakovich's music?)

A very fine performance! Sorry, but I am not a fan of the editing. Yes, the laser focus on the soloist(s) is very impressive. However, many of the special effects are distracting. It’s an amazing effort, but tone it down a bit and let the music remain the focu please.
Music is always a matter of personal perception. For me, it's a very personal thing, as always with Shostakovich. The music expresses pure fear, being rushed, there is hardly any time for relaxation, what could bring joy becomes a grimace, there are simply no real positive moments.

At 55:06 I expected a shot of a mushroom cloud to be superimposed over the orchestra. It’s just embarrassing. It doesn’t matter that this was done 22 years ago. It’s still tasteless. DSCH must be rolling in his grave laughing hysterically.
Lots of laudatory comments about the videography, the camera work is usually excellent in this series and show that the editors know the score and adapt to it. Excellent in the 4th Symphony for instance. But, oh but, is it necessary to use so extreme zoom work like filming almost inside the nostrils of Bychkov about 2 minutes after start of 1st movement or inside the right eye of the oboe player about 12 minutes later? Lots of frequent unnecessary extreme zooming, in my opinion, that distract from the main goal. Also the use of multiple images, the whole orchestra rotating in the air all those strobe lights are more fit to a nightclub band or a rock concert. Please, mister editors, if this music bores you, find it "heavy", and use this "tricks" to lighten it (and I don't criticize you for that) please don't spoil it for the others that like it and want to "see" it as it really is (too many "its", I know, sorry).

Saw Bychkov few years ago conduct this very piece, just with Czech Philharmonic. It was just as incredible

34:35 I like how the string passage is played more as a staccato. Kurt Sanderling also did it this way. Mostly it's played rather legato.
