- So many people look at the @HologramElectronics Chroma Console as a Multi-FX pedal, or worse, a disappointing follow-up to the Microcosm. What if those viewpoints are just misinformed or not fully developed? I can honestly say that my original thoughts fell in the "how will they follow up the Microcosm" camp, but it wasn't until I got the Chroma Console in my hands that it became clear that I had to throw any preconceived ideas and let the pedal just speak to me. This opened a whole new world of sound design for me where every twist and turn of a knob or press of a button unlocks newness and wonder!
Join me here as I give my thoughts and show you some quick tips on how to tame this pedal and bloom into the sound design tool it can be. Let's unleash creativity together!

I view the CC as four multi-effect pedals with no overlap in a single pedal switcher, all tempo-synced with Korg-style gesture recording, and a looper in the switcher set to be first or last in the chain. I’ve made similar setups with lots of pedals, but it’s never been quite what I wanted. The CC is super simple, compact, flexible, and limiting, all at the same time - I absolutely love it. Exactly what I’ve been looking for in a pedal for a long time.
Nice technique of setting something up and then switching to different effects, changing the effect order, etc. while retaining the gestures. It adds a sense of discovery to the CC and the sound design process. It was a great call by Hologram to not ship it with a ton of presets. I’d rather do what you did: find something new and save that. Nice work.
Thanks so much! I’m pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment of the limitations of the CC. Makes me think in different ways. While limited, it’s still chock full of vast potential and every time I use it, every new place in the signal path I try it, new sounds are unlocked. It’s a fantastic pedal!
Hello! Please could you try it with eq pedal? I like the idea of console BUT it’s too lo-fi for me. Sometimes i like this kind of sounds. But mostly i play in much more wide range of eq.
I don’t generally play with an EQ pedal but I do know there is tone control on the Chroma!
Another great demo man.. 👍🏼Def a cool pedal.
Thank you so much! I'm really enjoying everything coming out of this one! It's a gooder!
Not a pedal. It may have pedal like buttons, but it's not going on anyone's footboard. You'd be fiddling with it too much to perform with it.
Soft disagree here! I’ve put it on my board before as my end of chain. I did keep it to one sound mainly but it worked! Didn’t try changing presets via midi but that’s also an option.
It DOES take up a LOT of board real estate though 🤣
#asmr 😂
To some it may be I suppose. There are worse things 🤣
That is a whole lot of pedal for $399 in 2024 dollars.
You’re so right!!! It can do so much and I’m just scratching the surface!
Agreed--a whole lotta bang for the buck.
@izzymonkey whole lotta!
What
Bang for the buck. The $399 bucks
I got one of these recently (after being floored by the Microcosm... shocker lol). I honestly think it's almost worth it for the Sweeten and Cassette settings alone lol. The sensitivity secondary control on Sweeten heavily changes the way playing feels. It almost adds the feel of a compressor without the actual compression. Cassette is just gloriously imperfect. The pedal is definitely fun to make unique sounds with, but it surprisingly does "normal" sounds well, too. Will it replace my pedalboard? Nah. Is it a phenomenal addition to my pedalboard that gives me endless additional sounds that I wouldn't otherwise have? Yessiiir. Nice demo!
I completely agree! It’s so creative and yet has the ability to get classic sounds. It’s a keeper!
AND it looks great on a desktop with synths!
Why is he reviewing this in a library?
🤫
wtf is with the "perv-y whispers" gross
You gotta watch out for them perv-y types. The internet is crawling with them!
Please speak louder or decrease guitar volume next time. Other than that, awesome gear and review
I’ll keep trying to make things better! Thanks for weighing in to help :)
cool gear ! ty for showing it to us. Just had a couple of minor issues with the vid : there's a little discrepancy between voice volume and guitar volume. Also the vid is lacking chapters. Keep up the good work !
Thank you so very much for the constructive criticism! I’m always looking for ways to improve the quality here on this little side project of mine. 🙏
Why are you whispering?
I’m not! 🤣 I’m just being chill trying not to wake people up in the house when I record, but this is my normal voice!
I like my women like my pedals-plugged in, loud, and fully wet.
😆
Love love LOVE it when gear demos aren't the usual hysterical shouty YT stuff; insta-sub, great work!
Why thank you! We’re just doing our own thing over here having a blast and everyone is welcome to join! Glad you found us :)
I bought this and am selling my Gen Loss MKII. This looks like it does a lot of what I used the GLMKII for plus so much more. Question: do you usually play in standard tuning?
Hey! I totally here where you're coming from on the Gen Loss! I just finished up a video (still need to edit it) where I'm getting GLMKII sounds + MOOD sounds from the Chroma! It's wild!
I tend to place in standard tuning and only venture into different tunings with my acoustic (thank you Dashboard Confessional!). All the tunings on my videos thus far have been standard. Why do you ask?
@@thepedalcollaborative I hear you making sounds I wanna make and was wondering if you were achieving that with non-standard tunings. Maybe...I can pay you for a zoom guitar lesson or 2?
@LiveWorkWander I’d be happy to help you out however I can! Where are you based? I’m US in EST time zone. You can email me at: thepedalcollaborative @ gmail .com
I have the chroma console since it dropped and there’s a couple of things I wish I could change. Access to presets is clunky when trying to use the pedal in a live situation and I wish that that the modules could be swapped in the channels. Having the reverbs and tape delay at the same time would be killer or cassette and broken. Other than that it’s a killer bit of kit.
I agree with everything you just said! I wonder if switching presets via MIDI would be easier live. 🤔
Having freedom to swap algorithms in the modules would be killer but I imagine hard on the processor.
It’s a fantastic pedal and I think the limitations force different approaches to creativity and I love that about it!
What’s that white thing in the middle? Did you already chip the finish?
You’re there first person to notice/comment! I got this in trade and was told it was a b-stock / finish issue when they got it but never bothered to get it replaced. It feels like something got in the way during the painting process. The edges are smooth so I don’t think it’s a chip. Everything is very solid on this pedal so I wouldn’t be concerned.
Great noticing & calling it out!
But can you even engage and disengage the effects individually with a multi-footswitch? I don't want to scroll through presets on stage, I just want to turn on and off the reverb or delay.
You can set the footswitch to only engage/disengage the effects you want, so there’s a LOT of flexibility there without needing to scroll through presets
I been looking for a nice video that showcases what the chroma console can do , you delivered with this, great job bro ! ✊🏾
Thanks so much!!! Glad it helped! If there’s another video you’re looking for let us know!
Gen Loss... 😄 Yep. Gotta represent my local Minneapolis. crew... the Gen Loss Mk II is amazing--and beyond the scope of what Hologram is trying to do here with its Cassette FX. That said, the way they implemented it here provides a color that I appreciate. I didn't gel with my Chroma right away, but I've come around and truly value its flexible architecture, immediacy, and build quality overall. Oh, and Sweeten + Collage FTW. Pitch is really fun, too.
It’s so fun! I agreed it’s not a replacement for the Gen Loss. The Chase Bliss crew are beyond amazing at what they do!
Cassette has a nice flavor. Probably more akin to vintage studio effects than a copy of the Gen Loss
Even the captions were in lower case.
🤣 🤣 🤣
The Bob Ross of pedal gear reviews😂🫡
Honored to wear that title! 🥰
Just pick this up so pumped to watch this
It’s an amazing pedal! Hope you enjoy!
Is your family sleeping dude? What’s up with the whispering
Actually yes. You are 100% correct here. People sleeping in the next room 🤣
@@thepedalcollaborative 😆
Every once in a while I make a video during the day and you can tell the difference in lighting, but mostly in my voice both in volume and in caffeination level 🤣
Great… but why do you whisper so artificial?
Not artificial! I’m legit trying to not wake up everyone in the house!
asmr.....cool
😎
Hey budddy
Heyo!!! 👋
-1 can't hear mic low or whispering in the middle - tone of voice gives u duche chills
Thanks for the feedback. Always looking for ways to improve!
🙏
I was wondering why he started whispering too after the intro. I thought it had something to do with the pedal, or what he was going to do with the pedal.
@0x80O0oOverfl0w one whispers in sacred space
@@thepedalcollaborative 😂😂😂
:)
I am interested in this pedal. I cannot stand this pansy/salesman talking. I will look to find out about this pedal elsewhere.
There’s a couple more videos on here without my pansy salesman whisper talk.
This one’s good. I don’t say a thing!

@@thepedalcollaborativeA whispering salesman, lol
@jasondorsey7110 😆
I started with Holograms Jets, then sold to fund Microcosm. The microcosm blew me away. I find it so easy to get some great sounds with it. Had Chroma on presale. It arrived. Just didn't click with it. This vid has inspired me to give it another go and as you say, embrace the limitations. Subbed up
Thanks for the sub!
Yeah there’s no shame in not clicking with something. Not everything is for everyone. For me I think I approached the Chroma will little expectation. I knew it wasn’t a Microcosm 2.0, but I wasn’t sure what to expect. I read the manual before it came and saw that it was designed to embrace the limitations of old studio gear. Give it another try but don’t feel bound to liking it :)
