Deeper than hair, became one of the best hairdressers, in my book, when I first watched her video, a few years back, where some bully girls, had cut a chunk of hair out this little girls hair. She was such a sweet looking little girl, and you could tell her joy was gone, behind that. I saw, and felt the tender loving care Deeper Than Hair did on caring for her hair, and made her hair so beautiful, the little girl had the prettiest, widest smile, and her joy was restored. After then, Deeper Than Hair became the best, to me. I just saw her beautiful heart.

Those of us who are always there for everyone else often find that when we really need support--it's just not there. The same people who say, "Oh you know you can call me any time" but when we do, all we get is a handful of excuses. You end up feeling stupid because you believed what they said, and you end up dealing with the situation alone. Then when you see that person somewhere they're like, "Girl, where have you been?" I worked hard for my company and every time they needed me I was there. After my first loss I went back and didn’t even get a sympathy email. In fact I had my boss email me about taking too much time off the phone. I went on leave and then had them question how I could care for my kids and my sick father if I was so depressed. I let my leave run out and I never returned. I’m working again for another company that seems to be better but at the first sign of bs I’m out. Once gymnastics season starts gymnasts are constantly practicing, even judging competitions takes a toll because they have to provide constructive feedback to the athletes, score them, competitions last for hours, and they're constantly going on during comp season. I didn't expect to get that story when I saw the title! I commend you on knowing your worth and pivoting on faith! I was going to therapy for years after my mom passed just to get time off work. It became a pattern every year! As soon as I worked enough hours to build my time, I would call out again. I didn't care. Until one day a manager, who I considered a friend, asked " whats going on with you?" The question came from a place of concern, but mostly from a place of business. "You're here to do a job, and while you're here you have to do your job" - she said. At that moment I remember thinking - what if I wasn't here - That question was so packed w emotion that I went to my car and cried my entire lunch hour in the parking lot. It was the first time I considered taking my life.
Thats when I knew my time was up. I was paid very well. Had a "good job w benefits". The job itself was relatively easy because had acquired so much experience and knowledge, but I had to go.
It was serving no purpose. I could no longer work 10 hours a day to pay bills and cry in my car for an hour. The worst part was I never knew when that feeling was going to hit, but then I began to see the signs of despair. I used to wake up feeling it. Then jokingly tell my friends, let me apologize Now, because I Know I have an attitude!! We would laugh , but I was very serious.
In hindsight I actually appreciate my manager's words because it opened my eyes.
I'm not in a better place... but i'm not crying in my car either. 🙏

Your story hit so hard. Sometimes we have to be selfish and do things to just benefit ourselves. It seems selfish I guess but you can't just give give give all the time especially when at the end of the day the takers and users- no matter how nice they are- dont care about you. That's something i had to realize for myself. Also burnout is real! Thank you so much for this

One would think after all those years I would gotten better but it still hurts. Life continues to throw curve balls and the one person, my mom, I think can only help me through is not here. I’m like Can I just visit? People are still asking if I’m still baking after a year of closing. It was the best thing for me. I bake when I want to bake now. Sis, my condolences for your loss. Listen......losing your mother is a different feeling than losing anyone else. The grieving process is different for everyone. I left a job I worked at for 20 years because they stopped caring and I was burnout and when I left, I had no plan. Assured, my God who has always taken care of me never stopped. It was the best decision I ever made. It sometimes takes stepping back in order to know which way you need to pivot, as you say. Wishing you well on your next journey.❤

People can be so inconsiderate and uncaring and will attempt to suck all the life out of you when you're down. I don't mind saying no anymore. In fact, I don't wait for them to even ask anything of me, it's an automatic NO! Glad you pivoted and found another path within your industry to follow. My "Philly Sista," you touched my heart today. Thank you for these beautiful words. I understand your pain. I lost my grandmother in 2009 who was my mother, best friend, and the most precious person God has given to me. When my grandmom went home to glory I pivoted the hell out of Philly to Las Vegas, NV for seven years. Then I returned to Philly in 2017 due to a family issue. Now I going to pivot into a new and exciting role in my life. I'm in college pursuing a new career. Planning on moving out of state again. And redesigning my life! You are so right when things don't go the way you want "PIVOT" in another direction. Change is good for the soul! Also, the young lady's hair is fabulous. As always your work is a masterpiece. I absolutely feel like this video was meant for me to see ! Man 😢😢😢😩😩😩I’m over here in tears because I feel your every word. I’m a hairstylist and have been one for over 22 years. I lost my18 year old son (Shad) now 19 years in heaven . My Angel now .❤ I have had similar feelings about my time as a hairstylist, especially after losing my son. I feel unappreciated and going through something so traumatic as losing my son to cancer. Coming back to the salon doesn’t feel the same. I am not feeling it as much. Love my clientele & love what I do,but I feel it’s not reciprocated. Listening to you made me feel like it’s ok to feel the burnout and want to go to the next level. Not sure what this is but I don’t feel like completely leaving the salon scene! I appreciate you and love your work and honesty. You have given me a different outlook regarding stylist burnout and when it’s time to go. And being ok with your decision. Thank you and I’m sure my son would be so proud of me. Love you Shad 🤍🕊

Wonderful Wise Woman…my name is Carla..I came for the hair because I am going bald at 74 years old. I grow hair everywhere but my head. But I became engrossed in your story and you lifted my soul. I got the better part of you. You are a chance gift from the great spirit. THANK YOU AND THANK GOD

I am so very sorry for your loss sister. I have had the same experience with family and friends whom I have supported but the same folk will leave you high and dry when you are in need. It's been a real fight not to be bitter and resentful. It really hurts though. Anyway, I am very glad that you have decided to devote to this new chapter in your life. I so wish you were able to do my grandmother's hair next May for her 100th birthday but she is in Virginia. Best of luck, much love, and wishing you well in all of your endeavors. xoxoxo

Peace and love to all who are struggling in the aftermath of personal tragedy. You don't have to do it all. Lean on your supporting cast if possible. Don't be afraid to say NO. Also, I love how you pass each section ONE time!!!! Love thy strands!

I loved and appreciated this story. I recently moved cross country away from my family after a lot of struggle and turmoil trying to make it work with them.. dealing with the pain, guilt, and sadness from that decision but like you said, you're always allowed to pivot to live authentically to you! Her hair turned out amazing as always.

Needed that word. God sends reassurance at exactly the right time. Had back to back losses. Makes you truly register even more the value of time and happiness. So, sending thanks and happiness your way.
