To Anjish : There is thing that i got taught about in school, its called gravity. With ponting falling to catch the ball and subsequently taking the catch, there was no way he could have stopped the ball from touching the ground, without causing severe injury to his hand/wrist.
I think that the catch is valid because he has control of the ball before the ball hits the ground. Of course the ball does hit the ground at some stage, im just saying that in my opinion it looks a valid catch. Furthermore the ball DID NOT hit the glove therefore it wouldnt really matter. Im not a biased australian btw, im from New Zealand :D
Anyone who says that the Ponting catch wasn't picked off the ground shouldn't even bother to get their eyes checked because their bias has completely blinded them.
For people who question the integrity of a cricketer, would you feel the same way if you didn't have the benefit of a TV replay? I've played cricket at a reasonable level and I know there's no way to know, even for the player who actually took the catch, whether the ball was grounded (it's a matter of less than a second) - with the protective gear and helmet and all that.
no harshkalra90 if it hits the pad first then the bat it's still out -_-. if you're gonna rant at least read the rules. Whatever order it hits bat and pad its still out so i believe you are the troll
Seeing kumble's head down and trying to cop all of this from the journalists is really quite sad. I totally agree with Jim's comments; India had just lost by 122 runs, and now everyone should just leave him in peace.
I can't see anyone considering whether Ponting didn't realise in the moment that he had grounded the ball. I think his response was so feisty because he genuinely thought he caught it fairly. Look at the replay - he catches the ball but then his head slams into turf at the same time he grounds the ball. In that moment, he probably didn’t realise that he had actually grounded the ball with his hand (smashing your head can disorient you). It’s easy to say looking at the slow-Mo that he should have known but watch it in real time and you’ll realise it happened very quickly. Ponting’s behaviour was questionable at times but I think he is being vilified unreasonably here without people actually thinking about the sequence of events.
Really can't see anything wrong with that catch, he clearly had control of it before he hit the ground. If he had fallen in a different and could have landed with his palm facing upward the ball would have stayed in his hand. If you want to see exciting cricket with acrobatic catches you can't penalize someone for diving full length and having no choice but to land with the ball touching the ground. Just my 2 e-cents
I have to comment on this. First - the correct decision was made because the ball probably didn't hit the glove - benefit of the doubt to the batter. 2nd - Ponting is allowed to appeal as he caught the ball off the ground; now before you all shout "but he grounded it", take a careful look at the video - he dives full length, crunches into the ground and the helmet comes down right over the front of his face (kinda looks a bit funny actually) and it's then that the ball looks to have hit the ground as his hand rolls over...that's not a deliberate act and nor may he have known considering the helmet issue. 3rd - there was an incident before this where a nick went to Ponting at 2nd slip where it bounced and he immediately let the umpires know and didn't claim anything...and it wasn't an easy one to see either. So just calm down and think a little when you assess this. Which is not what the rabid Indian media did after the game!
on field you can understand some mistaken appealing, but his/team's attitude off the field is same - arrogant, boorish, bullish towards the opponents. Haddin's reply to Vettori's comments is similar...Haddin could have just accepted his mistake...instead he went on to call Vettori's claims as 'poor'.
That was a great ausi team but was feared of losing their winning streak.. once you want to win by hook or crook you do all those stupid things... Unfortunately it did change little in future.
As for the rest, yes there were some dodgy umpire decisions, on both sides (that's right the aussies got some too) even though the Indians copped more. Explain to me how that is the aussie teams fault, they were neutral umpires and they gave the decisions not the aussies. Then we have people saying they were unsportsmanlike for celebrating before shaking hands with the Indians, seriously show me a video of a winning team running to congratulate the losing team before celebrating before or since.
On the battlefield, the first casualty is the truth. If a batsman at Ponting’s level claims he did not ground a ball when in fact he did, he is either incompetent and should not be playing, or he is lying. That journalist should have questioned one of two things - his integrity or his competency.
Jim Wilson misses the point- the issue is whether Ricky Ponting fairly claimed the catch. Replays suggest no. And he would have known (equals not fair play). What's more, the replays only serve to embarrass you.
Well, Cheating is the only aspect Haddin is ahead of Gilly. Gilly and Mark Waugh were my favorite non-Indian heroes. That Steve Waugh team played hard but fair.
@dospeak The journalist questioned his integrity by questioning why he claimed the catch. By questioning whether Ponting believed he legally took the catch the journalist is questioning his integrity because he claimed the catch.
Winning at all costs has gotten so much into the head, they have forgotten to play the game in the right spirit. Sledging, Abusing other players and officials, Cheating and considering themselves above the opponents & the game, are a product of Pressure from the fans and pressure from the system to win at all costs and the pride they get from it. No wonder why the players resort to ugly tactics and questionable behaviour to try to win matches. All of this kept mounting and took a toll on the best batsmen of this generation, Steven Smith. The truth is Aussies are more than good enough to win games much more without resorting to these ugly tactics and behaviour. Compared to the Aussie Hockey team the best Hockey team in the World, who dont play with such a cavalier attitude, the Aussie Cricket team is a disgrace to their nation.
Laws of Cricket 32 (Caught) 3. A fair catch: A catch shall be considered to have been fairly made if ... (c) the ball does not touch the ground, even though the hand holding it does so in effecting the catch.
He actually pushes the ball into the ground. WTF. Ricky's a very good batsman and a horrible cheater. Ricky should have been repremanded by the match referee
People say the catcher must always know, but this is not always the case. There have been several times where I was unsure whether I had taken the catch or not because it was so close. The thing that irks me though is Indians always say trust us. trust us that the Bhaji incident was a misunderstanding, or that tendulkar/ dravid were just cleaning the ball. When things go against them they are the first to accuse ppl of cheating. Given their record they shouldn't accuse anyone of anything.
It was a rage between few Ozzy Cheaters (Ponting, Clarke) vs few Indian Racists (Harbhajan, Ishant & his defenders). Least you could say that that Ozzy team had far more mature mentality in life in compare to most of the Indians on that tour(and it has been the case always)

@tgmcrad Great player but everyone knows that the hotspot on Pietersen's bat was nowhere near where the ball passed his inside edge. It seems he never admits he made a mistake. He did lose it and it was the match referee that fined him 40% of his match fee, not me!
Well, it happens... but I must say there were some questionable decisions made against the Aussies at Lord's... as a cricket enthusiast, I just can't wait for those referrals to come in to place... I believe that's happening in October.
what haddin did as reallydisgracful but i do not think ricky ponting cheated on tat catch. it was really excellet effort and he surely took a marvellous catch. it was in his grip when the ball touched the ground while being in his grip. he had control over it. it's just his whole body landed on the grass:P
As usual not only Australian cricketers are frustrated because their *s* has been kicked, there media is also very low level of characters. Nothing more then you can ever ask from them... shame on you Australian cricket and media....
The Ponting saga was a storm in a teacup. Sure, I have very little Respect for Postings ethics but he claimed the clove/catch (b.t.w the ball DID touch the ground) and the decision was Not Out. Justice prevailed now move on "Gentlemen"!!!
Danny, that kind of off topic comment evidences my point about the indignation. I realize our Ozzy past is littered with shameful acts. Doesn't mean I can't spot the hypocrite in the crowd. It's amazing how people from such an awesomely ancient country can ritually condone human rights abuses via a cultural caste system and still have the energy to complain about how their people are treated in an obviously younger and less culturally evolved country like Oz. Must be a 'birth right' thing huh.
'if you're actually questioning my integrity in the game then you shouldn't be standing here...' Well, Ponting, if your integrity wasn't questionable he wouldn't have asked... the implication that only people who believe in you have the right to ask questions just proves the arrogance of the aussie cricket team - that journo had every right to ask that question - that Ponting went on the attack suggests a guilty conscience.
Yeah, but that doesn't matter. Even if you have control of the ball in the hand, the ball is not supposed to make ANY contact with the turf - none - to be considered legitimate. You're right - a good deal of catches AREN'T technically legal, and if they were heavily scrutinised wouldn't be allowed. Personally, I don't like the law, and think examples like that in the vid should be considered fairly caught - even though I'm not 100% convinced it caught the glove. Great bit of fielding.
Ganaguly and dhoni have claimed half volleys before and there was nothing said by Australians. Andrew Strauss claimed a half volley in the Ashes and all the Australian commentators acknowledged there was no way he could have known. That's the difference. And FYI the rules state you must have control over the ball and your body before it touches the ground ... so it actually can touch the ground and still be a catch if controlled.
You're the one who needs to think before they type. Cronje admitted at the King Commission held in 2000 that he had taken money from bookmakers to contrive the results of cricket matches. South African players have stated that they received offers from Cronje to 'under perform'. Cronje testified at the King Commission that he thought it was 'money for jam' and apologised for his behavior. Look at the corruption that's occurred in your own country before you criticise other nations!
He's played with integrity? HA HA HA. Doesn't even walk when clearly out, say's Ganguly was out when HE WAS NOT OUT (when Clarke claimed it) and countless more! He's a legend no doubt but a CHEAT as well.
Apparently you haven't played cricket in that position. You are able to see where the ball hit. That fielding Position is one of the most Dangerous, why? because keeping your eyes on the ball will prevent extremely serious injuries. Any other fielding position you can proably take your eyes of the ball.Last but not least. There was a time in Cricket where you did not even wait for the umpire to give you out you walked because you knew.Ricky should of known that. That's how the game should be played.
I think Ricky Ponting was out of line there. Maybe he didn't see the ball touch the ground. But claiming so afterward the match was not like an Aussie I am sorry to say.
Read ***** below and then watch at 1:12 A catch shall be considered to have been fairly made if (a) throughout the act of making the catch (i) any fielder in contact with the ball is within the field of play. (ii) the ball is at no time in contact with any object grounded beyond the boundary. The act of making the catch shall start from the time when a fielder first handles the ball and *****shall end when a fielder obtains complete control both over the ball and over his own movement.******

The problem with this video is its date of publication and the brad haddin/neil broom part...I mean the video was published in 2008, but the neil broom incident happened in Feb 2009 at Perth... Could someone explain how could these guys predict the future so damn accurately?.
Ponting is a passing phase. he was a embarrassment to cricket Australia. they know it. just live it alone its boring. infact he inherited a great side from Waugh Mcgarth Warne they really didn't need Ponting. its like Barca Pep left but still kept winning this doesn't mean the next manager is great.
Brad, I hope you know the history of Australia very well, the history behind Australia's National(anniversary) Day.
You just hate Australia chief. No need to hate an entire nation
Yeah, what about it?
To Anjish : There is thing that i got taught about in school, its called gravity. With ponting falling to catch the ball and subsequently taking the catch, there was no way he could have stopped the ball from touching the ground, without causing severe injury to his hand/wrist.
You have to read MCC Rules book that batsman is not out when Bowl is grounded in act of catching the bowl.
Pointing and Haddin are criminals. Why are the playing cricket?
Criminals? and how did Haddin come into this?
It's tough for Australian journalist digest the truth
He grassed it, To be fair to Ponting though, his eyes are off the ball. He takes it and grounds it without being able to see it.
And why isn't Gilchrist having a go at Pointing.? He usually gives a earful when the opposition batsmen doesn't walk after nicking
Gilly wouldn't b in d team if speaks to punter like that. Punter was d captain & his orders were carried out there in everything.
Which is not what the rabid Indian media did after the game!
where does the brad haddin part come in?
Ponting's looks, expressions and behavior match GWB quite well!
ricky the biggest cheater in world cricket
Inians are the biggest cheaters. Why don't you lot outlaw the crooked bookies?????
@@peterfrank77 recently Australian did the biggest cheating in world cricket and this time they caught red handed
Peter Frank indians cheated with your mother
Ponting is my role model
Looking at what happened in England, i think its safe to say that India has bullied teams outside India as well.
India's reactions are more like retaliation.
on field you can understand some mistaken appealing, but his/team's attitude off the field is same - arrogant, boorish, bullish towards the opponents.
Not the 'Australians', but 'Australian cricketers', that too not all of them, but few.
Even if it pad or bat or batpad, but Ponting certainly knew that the ball was grounded and not a clean catch.
Ponting can be best described as a disgrace to the game of cricket.
Looking at times today, I think Aussies and everyone should really judge Indian media.
Ricky should be replied equally brutally that he should be asked to leave the field.
Maybe just stick to following field hockey and leave the cricket to the men 👍
lads, we will come to your land and win the world cup ... stay clam ... cheers.. proud to be an indian ..
It's going to be a good World Cup. It's going to be close between Aussies, indians and the South Africans.
If you Indians are all so proud of your country, why won't you fucking live in it?
try to beat us in cricket dude or in software ?
PersianDweller yes , agree
try to have a clean country....
Laws of Cricket 32 (Caught)
Pointing asking journalists who should not be here when he questioned that how Australia people will be
Let's talk cricket, shall we?
It was a rage between few Ozzy Cheaters (Ponting, Clarke) vs few Indian Racists (Harbhajan, Ishant & his defenders). Least you could say that that Ozzy team had far more mature mentality in life in compare to most of the Indians on that tour(and it has been the case always)
like how the sky news reporter says that the indian journalists are educated...duh...
you are quite right, race isn't the issue. It's Ponting's nature.
u ppl talk about jounalism....see sydney2008. U will receive the better half of it. please do integrity check. history is repeating.....clark and warner issue.....hahaha we dont lost anything still the No.1 team in test cricket
Did you think the catch was valid despite the ball hitting the ground or because it didn't touch the ground?
I thought Ponting handed it well. I am tired of the stock responses that players give during interviews.
Absolutely spot on
@tgmcrad Great player but everyone knows that the hotspot on Pietersen's bat was nowhere near where the ball passed his inside edge.
Ya Steve bucknors integrity should have been questioned
Pointing is abrasive as usual
This is the culture that brought the sandpaper gate
As usual not only Australian cricketers are frustrated because their *s* has been kicked, there media is also very low level of characters. Nothing more then you can ever ask from them... shame on you Australian cricket and media....
The Ponting saga was a storm in a teacup. Sure, I have very little Respect for Postings ethics but he claimed the clove/catch (b.t.w the ball DID touch the ground) and the decision was Not Out. Justice prevailed now move on "Gentlemen"!!!
Ricky pointing or ducky ranting??
Danny, that kind of off topic comment evidences my point about the indignation. I realize our Ozzy past is littered with shameful acts. Doesn't mean I can't spot the hypocrite in the crowd. It's amazing how people from such an awesomely ancient country can ritually condone human rights abuses via a cultural caste system and still have the energy to complain about how their people are treated in an obviously younger and less culturally evolved country like Oz. Must be a 'birth right' thing huh.
Cricket probably is the most controversial game in the world ...
'if you're actually questioning my integrity in the game then you shouldn't be standing here...'
Well, Ponting, if your integrity wasn't questionable he wouldn't have asked... the implication that only people who believe in you have the right to ask questions just proves the arrogance of the aussie cricket team - that journo had every right to ask that question - that Ponting went on the attack suggests a guilty conscience.
Lol. The ball was grounded, Ponting is a cheater.
I think Ricky Ponting was out of line there. Maybe he didn't see the ball touch the ground. But claiming so afterward the match was not like an Aussie I am sorry to say.
Read ***** below and then watch at 1:12
A catch shall be considered to have been fairly made if
(a) throughout the act of making the catch
(i) any fielder in contact with the ball is within the field of play.
(ii) the ball is at no time in contact with any object grounded beyond the boundary.
The act of making the catch shall start from the time when a fielder first handles the ball and *****shall end when a fielder obtains complete control both over the ball and over his own movement.******
