I just signed up for Tandem, not knowing very much about it coming in.
A video like this would be VERY helpful for all Tandem users to watch before they start using the app.
The biggest problem I see with Tandem so far is, most people don’t seem to know how to use it, or get the most out of it.
It’s just a stream of random, awkward conversations with no actual structure.
Also, I was surprised to see, it seems MANY users treat it as a dating app more than a language learning app.
I don’t see that necessarily as a bad thing. What better way to learn a language than dating someone, but that was not my intention or interest in the app.
That said, one of my best friends met his wife at a garage sale he saw on Craigslist.
If you can find the love of your life on Craigslist, why not Tandem? 😂😂😂

You are really fluent , and your accent is cool , when i first watched one of your videos i was in B1 level and couldn't understand what you were saying because my listening was a mess but now i am working for a call center and have improved my fluency ,accent and pronunciation. I would say that the best practice to learn a language is to use it like the saying if you do not use it you lose it so i have been watching lots of videos and i am so amazed of the results i have gotten . Ivy continue with your videos they are really great .

Thanks for your interesting video, I am going to keep your tips for the next conversation I get! But the first thing many people need is how to find and keep suitable partners, I've watched a video from a guy explaining that nobody will reply if you say "hi, how are you?" because native speakers of English are very requested and receive many messages like this, which is boring to them. But even when I get some people interested in reply me, many times they stop chatting even after asking me something, and without reading my answer. I think it will be very interesting and useful if you do a video describing the kind of approaches that makes you interested in try a conversation or something like this!

Hi Ivymuse, thanks for your effort!
I feel like I am on stagnation in my Chinese, I take Chinese courses and have 2 tandems a week. I highly agree with your message on tamdem and would everyone encourage to do language exchanges. Doing them online is no problem, I think. The world needs more language exchanges :)
I was watching the video to find answers on how I should structure my tandem, because we're basically just talking one hour in german/chinese and note down how to say things better/correct. For my particular case I couldn't find answers I hoped to get seeing the title in the video. Feel free anyone to give advice on how to structure a language exchange here :)

Do native speakers make the best teachers? The question is do you need a teacher? If I find a native speaker that knows their native language to the level where they can explain any grammar / nuances of the language, you may not need a "teacher." Of course, we all need a teacher at some point in learning a language. I agree totally that you need to find a Language Exchange Partner that is compatible with you. I have not used Tandem but will give it a try. I have found a long time language exchange partner from another web site, (years ago); and I talk for one hour per day, at the same time in our language exchange. I took a long time to find find this language exchange partner, so give yourself time to find someone who is compatible with you and your language learning will improve immensely!

I don't know whether native speakers won't make the best teachers but I am pretty sure that Theresa will be one of the best among the teachers and language partners. :)

Completing sentences for others.. that's the worse! I have the chance of living in the country of the language I'm learning, but I struggle so much to practice with daily people because they have no patience and constantly finish what I'm trying to say... I really hope I find a good partner so I can really practice!
