This video is a year old but I wanted to comment anyway. I had a language exchange partner (Japanese) for several years using Skype. My partner was an older (65) lady so it definitely was not a "language + romance" arrangement. We spoke for an hour a week, 30 minutes in her language, 30 minutes in mine. We became kind of friends over time, and she was very smart and educated, so finding topics to discuss was not a problem. She was good about correcting my Japanese and being an encouraging teacher. The strange thing is: I learned more from this one hour/week than I ever did from college or from living in Japan. The reason is: your friends in Japan (or wherever) learn to understand the weird way you talk, and are too nice to correct you. Your friends learn which words you know and which words you don't, and learn not to use those words! A good language exchange partner will teach you these things that you can't learn chatting with friends. I disagree with Lampariello on one point: don't bother recording and reviewing your lessons. If you are going to spend time purely on listening practice, listen to a good podcast at the right level for you. Listening to yourself use bad grammar and bad pronunciation is not super helpful.
I've got a tip: Since most of language exchanges are not professional language teachers, the conversation can be very clumsy, with only chit-chat, boring subjects and going in circle. My advice: Write in advance a list of questions, subjects, news that you plan talking about. The best would be to use textbooks as a guide but it's too much demanded for most non-professional language exchange after all...
@@mz4657 Hahaha wow! That's actually amazing. I've actually had quite a different experience. I'm a young, white American guy and I put about 5 pictures on my profile and a little paragraph about myself in my profile. Every single time I log in, I get a least 3-5 messages from people. Girls and guys. I think most of the guys I met were straight, but one was gay. Meeting him was really cool, since I'm also gay. I ended up talking with him on and off for a couple years actually.
@@mz4657 Normally the deception might bother me a bit, but in this situation I kinda don't blame you at all. I am an American woman learning French and I joined a language exchange platform and was bombarded, to the point of extreme annoyance & stress, by the volume of inappropriate messages I was receiving from men, all the while just simply being a serious language learner.
Good tips! I have done this for learning Russian and it is very helpful. My tip might-be: if your skills are weak in the language you are learning, choose a partner who is more advanced in your native language.
I am conducting a Summer Language Club with my grandchildren this summer. We are doing Spanish and Russian. Since I know Russian, I am teaching them the Russian alphabet. My grandson will be studying Spanish in the 8th grade this fall, so we are studying Spanish. We started The Sorrel Colt today. We are doing this on Zoom. So basically I read them the 1st part of the story, and we discussed some Spanish words. I am going to send Ben a copy of the story, so he will have it for the fall.
I really like Language Exchange for learning a foreign language. I use Skype to talk to another person in a foreign language on a daily basis. I commenced talking to this person on three sessions per week. Time passed, personal interest progressed became more than just a language exchange. Exchange visits from the foreign country to my country and vice versa are now the norm. Yes, my language exchange became a Romantic Exchange and she is now part of my life. We work through parallel text language books when we are apart and immersion in each other's languages, when we visit "the other country" and are together.
Long time, likely over 10 months I've looked for a language partner. Believe me, it was a donkey work. But right now I already have it and I enjoy a very productive time.
Yes, that's why you have to keep digging. If a language exchange is not enough, you can always pay a tutor. Finding a nice tutor has never been so easy and cheap
Hi Luca I am learning french and chat to various people on line. I think the difficulty is when you get somebody who speaks your language, for me English, at a higher level than you speak theirs. I try and speak 30 minutes in French and they speak 30 minutes in English, however, often after 10 minutes they switch to answering in English. I stick with French for as long as I can but eventually English wins over. I guess it’s tiring for the other person (my level is B1). Great advice by the way as always.
Luca! You forgot to write down the platforms you have used in the description box! If anyone can help me with German I can help with English and Spanish which are both my native tongues.
If your still interested (after a year has passed), I can help you. I'm Swiss. So my spelling and vocabulary is quite good, but I have not this characteristic German pronunciation. I won't speak in my native dialect (aka Swiss German), but chance is I won't sound like a native German. If this isn't what you're looking for, I wish you good luck achieving your language goals!
a few years ago I participated in meetings but I ended up abandoning because in these meetings there were many interesting and traveled people, and I was inhibited somehow because I did not have something interesting to tell and I ended up leaving those meetings. That though hold me back to achieve better results.
Patricia keep in mind that to someone else, what seems totally mundane to you might be really interesting to them if they are from a different country:-) My good friend and I had a whole conversation this weekend about how etiquette regarding written letters/thank you cards differs in North America compared to her home country, Colombia- it was really interesting for both of us! I am SURE you have lots of interesting things to share!! All the best:)
Hi! But people can find other mutual topics to discuss, like favorite books or movies. They can create very interesting tasks for every single, or for a week.
Is the correct etiquette to ask a language partner or teacher if they are OK with you recording an exchange? I assume that some people might get self-conscious if they know that they are being recorded. Thanks, in advance, for any advice.
Mort7an i would wait until after you’ve built a relationship or talked to that person a few times. Once you’re a bit more comfortable around each other or have gauged their level of comfort with you then I don’t see why you couldn’t ask them. Maybe just explain to them why you’re recording it too

70 percent of exchanges consist of
1) flirting / whatsapp request
2) one or two word answers
3) not correcting your errors
4) boring replies
