- Continuing my brand new Epcot re edits and the second in my Imagination trilogy.
Jump back to 1999 and take a detailed look at the changes made to the ride and the pavilion as a whole. See how and where the ride path was altered and how the new ride fitted in.
Then enter the pavilion, walk the queue and take a full multi camera ride of the attraction covering every detail, with a new almost-all source audio soundtrack.

Changing the original ride is one of the biggest mistakes Disney has ever made (IMO). The original ride wasn't like others that became dated and had to be changed, it was just fun and beloved. It would still be fun in 2017.
I feel like some minor changes would be inevitable given the deteriorating state of the original ride in the late 90s...BUT NOT LIKE THIS! D:

I hate this version of the ride.
I’d blame Kodak for wanting a renovation for the ride. The turntable scene was really expensive to maintain, causing a lot of breakdowns

If you ever feel upset with yourself because you made a bad decision on something and regret it, just remember that Disney took one of the greatest rides to ever come out of WDI, on par with Pirates and Haunted Mansion, gutted it, built this which was apparently the best they could up with, relegated the character that sold more merchandise than MICKEY MOUSE to a cameo, and actually opened this to guests thinking it’d be just as good as the original. Granted, they did not get a very good budget but still, I have no idea how Disney could’ve thought this was acceptable at all.
Figment really sold more merch than even Mickey?!

The only thing that compares to the level of joy I felt when I first rode the original ride is the level of crushing disappointment I felt when I rode this one.

This was indeed the Fall of Imagination. It’s like waking through a moving horror movie. It's the stuff of NIGHTMARES!!! Xp
I don't think I can ever forgive Disney for what they did to this pavilion. It was bad enough to scrap the original ride in the first place, but then to keep continuing to have the monstrosity that's in there now without any hint of improvement, even when budgeting for attractions has expanded immensely, and then to scrap the original Imageworks for a DVC lounge... Epcot depresses me so much now.
Thank god that they removed this ride, The current ride is to be a retheme somewhere in the future.... So Journey into YOUR imagination is bad!

This is when Disney started to really lose their imagination. Took out a great ride and put in this monstrosity.
After all these years, I finally get to see this sad, sad version of Journey Into Imagination. While I love Eric Idle, this is even worse than the present version of the ride. No Dreamfinder, no imaginative displays, and only token Figment segments. Basically, no imagination.
If this had more figment I would like it more than the current verision.

I rode the original Journey Into Imagination 5 times or so, the last time, unbeknownst to us, in the attraction's final 3 weeks. Our next visit was Sept 2000. I remember how shocked I was when I entered the pavilion! No more light, airy queue area then walking up a ramp, entering a dingy looking load area. Then we boarded. YUCK!! What's with the odd, dissonant music??!! Wait, what? No upstairs??!! What the heck did they do??!!! The new "Journey into Your Imagination" just flat out sucked!!!

Great as always. I had gone to Epcot in August the year before for the first time and was so blown away imagination, & horizons. On our return trip this was there! I was so disappointed. After 2000 my next trip back was 2015, eek the seas was also ruined in my opinion. However Epcot is still a place of wonder for me . Looking forward to its future.

The music starting at 1:35 puts me on edge. The music from 2:28 to 2:43 makes me feel dread and fear. It all fascinates me, but also hurts...

What the heck were they thinking with the whole "telling the riders they don't have any imagination" thing? Still it was interesting to see the history behind this version of the ride.
Honestly sucks to see how much the pavilion has changed since it’s golden days
I know they can't bring back the original ride...I'm sure most of it was scrapped,while parts of it ended up in other attractions (a Dreamfinder animatronic became the mayor of the Ghost Town in Phantom Manor)...but I refuse to believe that the current ride (an even worse version of the ride shown here) is the best the Imagineers can do!

Yeah the Imagination Pavillon deserves an attraction on par with something like Mystic Manor. They could even use the new Marvel Figment Comics as a starting point and give it a steampunk vibe.
I would love to see something like that happened!!! Have it combine on the two figment comics. Within a story mesh in from the comic series and original ride! Even open up the old imagine works again with the steampunk vibe upstairs!
-snarkus63 The Mayor in the Ghost Town in Phantom Manor was inspired by Dreamfinder but is not an old Dreamfinder animatronic. Journey into Imagination has closed in 1998, and Phantom Manor was open since 1992, so is not possible. (Sorry if my english is not very good, I'm french) :)

Greenlighting this change was one of the *stupidest* decisions Eisner ever made! Easily right up there with canceling Disneyland's original second gate plans (Google "WESTCOT Center" for more info on those) and replacing them with DCA 1.0...

Thanks to Michael Eisner, and Kodak, Journey Into Imagination has met its downfall.
It's because Kodak wanted a reservation and Disney was low on budget so they had to do something and it was horrible.
The current verison is ok.

Surprisingly, I find this version of the ride to be a lot more interesting than the current version.
I've never been there and have only seen these videos, and even I don't like this new version. This was clearly an attempt to pander to a more cynical audience in the very late 90s and early 2000s, but people go to Disneyland to ESCAPE that sort of mindset.

I was really ready to give this version of the ride the benefit of the doubt, that it wasn't as bad as everyone said. The queue was very promising.
But wow does this ride stink. Aside from the obvious insulting at the beginning, all of the scenes in the middle are astoundingly boring and all overstay their welcome. They're incredibly unimaginative and uninspired. It treats you like a kindergartener and then has the audacity to say their shitty little ride sparked your imagination full of... whatever those abominations are.
I'm so glad they changed it to the current version, the edginess of the 90s almost destroyed this pavillion. The damage its done still remains to this day.

Great original concept that becomes bogged down with technical failures and over ambitious layouts seems to be Disney Parks MO as cheap updates take the place of anything inspired.
3 E ticket rides in World Showcase, Horizons original track layout, Wonders of Life all together, the Yeti, the original backlot tour, alien encounter..list goes on
As a person who didn't ride the original attraction and has no attachment to it, I feel this may have worked if only they just changed the name of the attraction to a completely different one.
It actually has some cool effects, and the theme fits into EPCOT.

Whatever name you gave this, it would still have been an absolutely terrible replacement for Journey into Imagination. Doesn't matter if you didn't personally have any attachment to it; a lot of people did, and replacing it with the likes of this was straight up devastating.
Even if the original ride never existed, the theme and some of the effects here might have been passable, but the ways they chose to present them cement this version's reputation as one of the all-time worst (starting your ride about imagination by insulting guests and saying they're unimaginative is _not_ a good move).
So your saying we just name it Journey into imagination 2 and it would be a much better ride? Haha! No. The name wont change a dang thing it's still a horrible ride even with a new name.
@@A_A610 I've also never ridden either (just seen these videos) and I think I understand OP's point; if they'd at least torn down Journey Into Imagination and then opened this in its place, people wouldn't have EXPECTED it to be like the original. It would have just been, "okay, Disney replaced another ride with something dumb again", rather than, "Why are they pretending this entirely new ride is supposed to be the old one?"
I absolutely adore Martin's video of the original ride (an Orlando-based friend shared it with me), and really they should have just tweaked that around whatever issues it was having, rather than utterly replacing it.

It's more along the lines of thinking that if the original ride had been TOTALLY replaced, including a name change, then although we'd still have a shit ride, there wouldn't be this assumption that it would be anything like the original.
Objectively, this version was a terrible ride; even if the original version never existed to be compared with, it's definitely not the standard you'd expect from the people who made Haunted Mansion or Horizons. The fact that it replaced an absolute classic just rubs salt into the wound.
The reason Disney went with...whatever the hell this was instead of a proper Imagination refurb was because Kodak (the sponsor) wasn't doing too well financially due to the rise of digital cameras, and wasn't able to provide the funds Disney asked in order to do what they were originally wanting. As a compromise, Disney pitched revamping the ride to cut costs for both companies...and it turned out to be an absolute disaster.
Hi, just came here from part one, man, Disney can grossly miscalculate sometimes! I consider the biggest cardinal sin of this version of the ride to be the nearly complete removal of Figment from the show itself. Say what you will about the various bits concerning riders' lack of imagination (although that can't possibly have helped much with overall goodwill, glad they removed that part at the beginning), but when you're casually erasing one of your most beloved mascots, a character who was likely the only reason most people bothered returning to the ride in the first place (myself included; yep, he won me over, never kill him again), your heart probably isn't in the best place to diagnose others' feelings, let alone determining the core appeal of your own attraction.

is it me or has the concept of this ride been sort of wasted, i mean this is supposed to be an experiment from the institute that HISTA established that a cloning device, an improved shrink ray, and a holographic pet was made in, i'm sure that the imagination institute would have much more exciting things to see than a bunch of low brow optical illusions
Blame it on the ridiculously low budget that Eisner gave them...
It's because the Disney company was about low budgets at the time, and also because Kodak wasn't doing well financially, so they definitely could not afford a refurbishment of the entire space.
Makes you wonder why they even bothered with the whole "refurbishment" in the first place.
this video failed to mention this but the only reason why this refurb happened was because of how expensive the original cost to run and how often it broke down :(
IMO, they should have just fixed the turntable (surely they had the technology to do so by 1998), updated the AA figures to newer models with Compliance, updated the Imageworks to feature more up to date technology and left the rest of the pavilion alone. A change this drastic was not in the least bit necessary!

The Epcot Legacy website has the soundtracks for every pavilion in future world up for download.
1. The soundtrack pieces that came from the Epcot Legacy website included only the track that you linked to.
2. All of the soundtracks were removed from the website some time ago.
+jetraydude Really? That sucks. I do have the soundtrack downloaded though, I could upload it to MEGA if anyone wants it? And yeah, I don't know where he got the rest of the tracks used because they weren't in the soundtrack download on the website.
Also these were composed by the Sherman Brothers and Bruce Broughton.
What I don't get about the current version (and this one) is the emphasis on the five senses.....that's not imagination. I mean, they link it TO imagination, but it's a bit of a stretch.

I would change Journey into your imagination and Superstar limo to neutral because even though there terrible replacements. There not that bad of rides, there bad but not horrible. Stich I would change to most hated disney bad attractions in my opinion as that ride just sucked and there was no redeeming quality's besides the stich animatronic. I agree with liked bad attractions as I think that Echanted Tiki Room Under New Management was a good show.

Nope. Give me the original. Figment was the mascot of the whole of EPCOT as far as I'm concerned. Destroying his ride and removing him from the park was a catastrophic mistake.

I see what the Imagineers were going for, but it was a total fail.
If i'm going to be honest, I would rather have this attraction over Journey into Imagination with Figment. Of course, I'm saying this without the Original in mind because I think we would all rather have that, but in terms of the Imagination Institute, I want this. I think Imagineers executed this poorly and they replaced the wrong attraction, but it made sense for the time. Amazing Video!
Current ride is much better then a ride that flat out starts with telling you "Yeah, you are creatively braindead, so we're gonna put you through some lame optical illusions to try and stimulate you"

I just think that a ride that continues the story of a popular show is better than a ride that ruins a much beloved character by existing. I do agree that the beginning could have done better than saying "Not much going on upstairs imagination wise," but this was the 90's.

As well as Communicore and the World Showcase? Because I've been there last summer in 2016. It was awesome! But Hollywood Studios... sucked to say the least; no offense. Though I enjoyed the Great Movie Ride.

It's sad how Journey Into YOUR Imagination lacks imagination. It is all so obviously cheap. Truthfully, if I'd known they were going to do this, I'd prefer they just tear it down and put in a rollercoaster.
I will admit that the ride had a stop/start quality to it before the referb. A pity they couldn't find a way to get that working right. :-(
It's funny you should say that because rumor has it that Fujifilm was lobbying hard to replace Kodak as an Epcot sponsor and they wanted to put in a roller coaster themed to Mount Fuji (now that I think of it, it would've been a precursor to Expedition Everest).
That concept ironically has more imagination than this soulless, empty, depressing reminder of what should've stayed.
This probably would've been cool at a regional park with a super tight budget or something like that, but to replace one of the most intricately and thoughtfully designed rides ever made into what amounts to nothing more than simple optical illusions and loud noises? No thanks...
Although the current one is a minor improvement, but it doesn't reach the imaginative heights of the original.
