Wow, this is how I remember it. Quiet, smooth, and a wonder! How the carousel in the beginning groaned with the engineering to sync up the cars and then was silent. The 90's version of this video has such loud ride vehicles. Even spaceship Earth now has such loud ride vehicles. When new, they glided like magic. I am glad we have videos that capture these rides as they were!
I loved how Figment was back then, so trippy and dreamlike. Then, later on they changed his character, and he became like a hyperactive little dragon that had eaten too much candy, lol
I miss the original full Attraction of this ride very much I wish that there was a way to return this Attraction back to the old way before Thank you for uploading this video
Best version of the video for this ride! I have to dig my 1983 version out from some dusty old VHS tape. This ride was SO COOL and made Epcot a truly unique and special place! It did look dated when I saw it in the later 90's but I would always come out of that raid with a huge smile! :)
I met Mr. Dreamfinder and Figment in 1983. I think the old version is by far the best. I now live on the side of a volcano in South America and I have my stuffed orchid Figment with me. Thanks somuch for this video.
Sometimes, I hear about rides that aren't around anymore, and I'm like, "I would've LOVED to experience this if it was still around or I was born earlier." So, this was a treat. My mom graduated in high school just a few months after this ride opened.
Thanks for posting this. I was telling my daughter how I much liked this ride when I first went on it in the 80's. I really liked this ride because it celebrated the value of our imagination.
If I go back to Walt Disney World, I would tell the pavilion that it’s not a good idea to change figment to inside out but instead bring the original back. Then it would attract more people and the Pavillion will be a success again
This was one historic ride, yet I am neutral on it being retired. I understand it needed a renovation since the technology of the ride was used since 1982. However, the ride itself would have been a good experience since it featured Figment as the star and showed how creative and imaginative one can be, so I would have been OK had the ride stayed.
This is the first time I have seen the original ride. I was there in Jan '83 - the pavilion was open but not this ride. We went back every year until '87 and we never rode this because we didn't know it was there! We just watched Captain EO.
I think I’m gonna write a letter to Tony Baxter to return this attraction to Epcot and make it better than ever with Disney movie Easter Eggs like at Its a Small World at Disneyland! It should include Inside Out especially. As Baxter wants the current redone
The most valuable aspect of this "historical" documentation: people are quiet. I am no longer willing to tolerate everyone talking loudly through everything. Society has changed.
VideofromGeorge: can you confirm that this video was shot during the first month that the ride was open? I just wanted to check to make sure that's correct.
Thanks. It's very odd that there doesn't seem to be any footage anywhere on the internet of the original Spaceship Earth attraction that existed from October 1982 to May 1986. There is a soundtrack which is on MartinsVids and also still photographs, but no video. It's especially odd when you consider how much video footage was taken at EPCOT Center during that time period. There's quite a lot of footage from 1982, 1983 and 1984 available but it's never for the Spaceship Earth ride. Perhaps that was because it was such a dark ride and the video cameras at that time might not have functioned properly in the darkness. That's the only explanation I can think of, although many of the other rides at Disney World were also pretty dark as well.
RIP Billy Barty! Your voice of Figment was just the cutest

Me too! It's as if we are watching our own family videos. Great!

I agree, Figment is much better as a curious student than an obnoxious know it all in today’s ride
I am so glad I got to ride the original. I guess those people who gave this a thumbs down prefer the Journey into Your Imagination disaster.

It's crazy seeing footage of a world when the population count hadn't even exceeded 70

I wish I would of had the chance to see this and wish they would bring it back. Thank you for sharing
I wish I could have experienced this ride in person. Looks great.
Thank you for uploading this. Brought back great memories.
I loved this ride when I was a kid. It's too bad Disney World changed it for the worse.

NOOO THIS LOOKS SO COOL I WANNA RIDE IT! 😫
Much better than the current one!
They drastically changed everything! It’s sad, it’s nothing like this.

This brought back sweet memories ❤️ Thank you!

I remember this from my childhood!
I just read a couple articles about Epcot and future expansions and came back to rewatch this ride, I may have cried a little.
I remember.
The same month it opened.
How in the world does this only have 940 views considering that the ride opened March 5th, 1983 and this was shot at the same time.
TH-cam didn't start until 2005, dingus.
Um, it has 4790 views, that's more views than there are people on the earth!
Two can troll...
The memories!!!

Why it is so windy outside??
So you visited right before they opened Horizons in October of '83. Did you ever get to go on it?

Yes. My father recorded this in March of 1983.
