Loki In-Depth Critique and Analysis: The Worst Marvel Show Ever

  • It has been a while
Welcome to my critique and analysis for Loki, another installment in the over-decade-long Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show was released on June 9, 2021, and it continued the story of the Loki that escaped with the tesseract in Avengers: Endgame. The show has an 8.2 on IMDb and a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Some are saying that this is the best thing that Marvel has ever done in the MCU. And they are all wrong.
Not only does this show single-handedly destroy the character of Loki and give him an arc that makes no sense whatsoever, it completely destroys the entire MCU by voiding the drama of all the past MCU movies and shows. And I will show you exactly how it did that by going through every episode of Season 1 of Loki and point out all the contradictions, inconsistencies, and nonsensical storytelling that is in this show. I hope you enjoy the review.

One thing that gets me about this show is... why not just give original Loki Sylvie's plotline? Have him escape on the first meeting with the TVA and have the show be trickster Loki bouncing around the timeline causing chaos and the TVA trying to catch him. Interestingly, this would cast Loki as the villain for the first lot of episodes (albeit a very fun, amusing one the audience will enjoy watching) but then you can flip it on its head by having the TVA be revealed as the real villains after the audience has spent time thinking of them as the good guys, inadvertently forcing Loki to be "good" and defeat them.

The love interest bothered me the most.
I can tell they thought "Loki can only be with someone he can never trick, so they can have trust. AHA, another trickster! He's such a a narcissist, he'll fall in love with himself!"
    No. You're wrong.
He MUST have a counterpart he can trick. They MUST be gullible to his schemes.
If there is never the OPTION to trick someone, then not tricking them has no meaning, there is no redemption, there is no trust.
If there is no OPTION for abuse, then a lack of abuse has no meaning.
The best love interests stir their own growth & the growth of the main character.
If not a trickster, then who should Loki be with?
Well, that great question HAS ALREADY BEEN ANSWERED. His wife in the comics(& myths), is Sigyn the goddess of loyalty. Like her, the love interest should've been a good/kind/strong/selfless person that challenged his ideals, and Loki should've been ABLE to trick her. But then CHOOSE not to. That is an eventual redemption arc AND romance arc, a perfect chance for enemies or friends to lovers, and opposing personalities for chemistry. Just one way to do it, I think the "variant" could've been his wife from another timeline where he didn't exist. A large mix of these things would've worked. But instead Loki falls in love with someone who doesn't challenge his self-centered evil pity party, and is also an ill-tempered trickster. Blegh.

The Tom Hiddleston Loki look is an Asgardian enchantment put on him by Odin and Frigga. It's magic tied to his soul, so it's not him casting the look onto himself, it's basically just who he is, it can only be broken in death or when using Joten abilities. Also, I think the "no powers" rule was a little fib. I think they have power draining abilities built into the time collars, but without that, they kept telling him the powers wouldn't work, though they can. Loki made a sword in the "Time Keepers'" Chambers, but didn't even realize it. The Infinity Stones don't work because they can't work outside of their own universe.

I think Fringy had a good point in his Endgame review. The rules of time travel set forth by both Endgame and Loki are inherently incompatible. That said, he had the luxury of ignoring Loki's rules since it came out after Endgame. Endgame sets the standard, even if it breaks its own rules, which it does.
When analyzing Loki, we don't have that luxury. The rules of time travel set by Loki cannot coexist with Endgame.
I hate how much of a mess the MCU is right now. Endgame needed to set the standard for time travel (or just fucking avoid it, which would've been the sensible route), Loki should've expanded on the concept, and set up the Multiverse, and MoM should've expanded on that.
Multiverse is the new Infinity Stones, and they've already blundered it.

Tbh Classic Loki (Richard E Grant Loki) is probably the most interesting character in the show. He’s had a strong character arc (of course that’s not saying much) and showed how good the main Loki could have been had he not been undermined by Sylvie.

    • @themadtitan7603
      @themadtitan7603 2 ปีที่แล้ว +76

That's kind of the Loki I wanted to see in the show. Loki's arc here felt like it was rushed as he realized he doesn't enjoy hurting people and that he wants to be better over 1 episode when it took the mainline version years to even choose a different path.
I would've preferred a show where Loki was straight up evil for most of its duration and then upon seeing how different versions of himself have accomplished their goals and were ultimately left with nothing but emptiness and no loved ones, he decides to set things right only for the finale to reveal that his actions throughout the series led to the rise of a greater evil in Kang The Conqueror.

    • @stephanie154
      @stephanie154 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I don't like to entertain it when someone says that Loki was undermined by Sylvie, while actually both these rich characters were undermined by the heavy plot.
At least, Loki had lines that directly spoke for his character development. While sylvie's descent into madness was barely explained/portrayed honestly bcoz the focus was on kang and Loki. Ep 5 did the same with the blanket-meadow conversation, that could be very dark and real, considering their tragic lives, especially Sylvie's. But no it was passed on as cute fluff, which I wasn't entirely opposed to atm.
I think what we really need is a show that is equally plot and character driven- that explores both these rich characters, and weaves their story with the multiverse. That's a much better way to address it than to put it on sylvie, who is a very capable protagonist herself. Let's not undermine her story.

    • @themadtitan7603
      @themadtitan7603 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@stephanie154 One of my disappointments with the MCU's Disney+ shows are how plot-driven they are. While I don't think that's a inherently bad way to write a story, given how already much of their movies are that way, I expected their shows to take advantage of their longer runtime and have their stories be driven more by the exploration and actions of the protagonist(s).
My point in relation to 'LOKI' is that I agree that both Sylvie and Loki's arcs were underserved by the shows script (the former suffers from this more given that this is her first MCU appearance) and I think one of the many reasons that was the case was that the series like most other MCU D+ projects, is more concerned with the world-building of the timeline, TVA and building up the mystery behind the Time Keepers and then later He Who Remains with sparse moments of character "building" showing Loki and Sylvie bonding, but nothing much more fulfilling from a characterization standpoint imo
I'd generally attribute the MCU's usual insistence on the 6-epsiode template for most of their shows on why they feel unfleshed out and have rushed finales but not Loki. I think in its case, 6 episodes would've been sufficient for telling a more compelling and narratively enriching storyline with more character depth, it's the way they used them and what they decided to focus them on that I think led to Loki's underwhelming characterization.

    • @stephanie154

@@themadtitan7603 i totally agree. Kinda want for them to tap into different genres now. Whatever does justice to the character, irrespective of the MCU moving forward or popular comic book runs being adapted. Just a good story. And palpable execution/adaptation.
We have MK dealing with gods and stuff but their writing is smart and thus manages to portray the protagonist, the supporting characters and the final showdown without undermining any one. It isn't perfect but it works, while the loki show essentially lacks nuance and subtlety in it's execution, even tho their plot and characters hold mad potential!
Episode 6 is very meta. Only if the writers were honest towards Sylvie's story, it'd be perfect in my books.

Most people don’t know but as pointed out by many medias, in the first episode on a file the TVA has about Loki, it states his Gender is Fluid. Great, so why can’t the TVA or any other Loki wrap their mind around the evil Loki Variant being a female?
If the TVA are stated to know Loki’s Gender Identity before Loki himself knows it than they should be able to take into account that the Loki their dealing with may not present or even be male, but they don’t. Atleast their not shocked like the 6 other Loki variants we see who all act like a Female Loki is terrifying despite the fact that CANNONLY, THEY ARE ALL GENDERFLUID. WHAT.
If this show wasn’t actively written with the thought process of Loki being genderfluid it should have never been edited into the show, point blank period. Everything the show does contradicts it’s tacked on half-assed take on representation, and that’s not even heading the part where they made their “Genderfluid” Bi Representation a villain who dies multiple times and falls in love with himself.

This show doesn't only make most stuff happening before it redundant, but it also breaks not only established mcu logic/lore, but the logic of ITS. OWN. SHOW. If all of the stuff the Avengers did in endgame was pre-planned by kang, then tony getting hit so loki could get the tesseract would also have to have been planned, otherwise the avengers wouldn't have had a single reason to go back to a different time in order to obtain it. And if that somehow wasn't planned, then how come cap and tony weren't arrested by them? They would have gone back to a time they shouldn't have been allowed to be in, which would make them variants, no?

I'm aware that Marvel movie lore is now separate from its comic counterpart, however I just assumed that they would treat infinity stones with the same magic/scifi rules which is that infinity stones cannot be used outside their own dimensions.
So even if Thanos came to the organization he wouldn't be able to use any of the infinity stones that were not a part of his dimension. However the reason why I think that might not be the case now in the movie lore is because of the "WHAT IF..." animated series since Ultron used infinity stones outside his dimension 🤷

Feels like this is the fate of any franchise where they just keep adding and adding more narrative content. Instead of sticking to a certain limited scope with beginning, middle and end, wrapping the story conclusively and letting it rest. (like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, for example)
Of course this kind of approach doesn't GUARANTEE a good story but it's a very important first step. Any story can benefit from these two things, I think - a skeleton (some sort of basic plan of where the story is meant to go and how it's meant to end) and a proper, conclusive, definitive ending (so no unnecessary spin-offs, sequels, prequels, whatever).

This latest episode, 1863 or whatever, he literally just reacts to situations around him without any character or flair or unique lines or emotion. He’s a side character in his own show. He just chases after people, works for people, and has no explanation for his motives.
He is the God of MISCHIEF and we haven’t seen him do anything mischievous in an entire season and a half. And he’s so dumb now?? He went from stabbing his brother to kissing and putting full trust in a variant of HIM (A KNOWN TRICKSTER) he met like, a few hours ago?

I have an idea don’t have love interest or have one that isn’t related towards him in anyway.

I was sincerely expecting to watch a series where Loki was finally the protagonist, to see him flourish as a character since he has only been used as a villain/comic relief/motivation for his brother in the movies. too bad this series didn’t give me anything that wasn’t a couple or good scenes, cool aesthetic, good soundtrack, and Owen Wilson.
Even worse, this series took away meaning from a character i was expecting to cherish even more.
also, i’m lgbt+, and that bisexuality line turned out to feel like a big slap in the face of the audience, especially fans who are part of the community. Loki has some decent lgbt+ canon in the comics (and, a-ehm, in the mythology itself!) but seeing it written so poorly in the series, and seeing it praised as the most progressive statement disney could make, only makes me hate the series even more.
all the more that disney itself is known to shove into oblivion the really good series who picture lgbt+ characters 1000 times better (the owl house mention was unexpected and much appreciated!)

Remember all the other Loki variants that have been pruned/transported to that place? Even though the TVA is a bunch of human variants with prune sticks, they have successfully caught and pruned EVERY LOKI SHOWN.
This whole series seems like a fan fiction the more I think of it. Sylvie is the only Loki that has surpassed the TVA, but seems to only have enchantment as her uniqueness(besides being a female).
She enchants a cloud that would consume anything it touches, but she can only enchant people through physical contact.
Even if Kang is more powerful than... idk, everyone. We haven't even seen any of his innate abilities to actually see him as a threat, especially since he voluntarily gives up his throne/position, with a nonthreatening demeanor, like the Wizard of Oz
The TVA headquarters looked like an entire city, but whole time during the fight between Loki, Sylvie, and the "Time Keepers", there's no alarm or rushing for support/backup.

    I hate this show, honestly
Not only does it break, misunderstand or change pretty much everything that is a recurring element from the MCU, its just plain unfocused and lacks any style or direction. It wants to be a fantasy adventure, a buddy-cop show, a character study, a philosophical sci- fi romp, a romance (?), a mystery, and a marvel film, and it fails at all of them equally because it isn't good at any particular one and lacks the proper runtime to fully develop any of its parts in any way.
It's also plain ugly to look at. The visuals are all brown or yellow and it all has this overly simple digital look that makes all the scenes feel without any sort of depth of field. The pandemic probably forced them to cut a lot of corners in terms of how many chacters were on screen, as for a supposedly high-budget disney show many of the sequences end up being the same bunch of characters talking in empty ugly rooms about the same stuff over and over trying to emulate Whedon-esque remarks and quips at each other. Same thing for the action sequences.
Narrative-wise, it's all over the place: safe to say the biggest influences are Doctor Who and funnily enough, Rick and Morty (two other sci fi-fantasy shows which blend concepts from different genres), yet it fails because it lacks the creativity to do anything new with it's premise.
As to why the TVA seems so ill-equiped and incompetent both in terms of its resources and agents, I took it as a way for the show to make it feel... somewhat believable I guess, as having it be more powerful and with more abilities would make such a bureacracy too overpowered/more overpowered than it already is. Hence why the only equipment they have are batons and poorly-explained time bombs.
They also keep talking about universes when refering to the characters which inhabit the MCU and like, you know a universe isn't just the earth right? On that topic, this show doesn't seem to know exactly what constitutes as a universe or a timeline. Is a universe another reality with a different set of rules? is it different versions of a character, like crocodile Loki? is an alternate timeline a different path? It seems to use both terms interchangebly, but that creates the issue that the rules of the multiverse are undefined and therefore, we never really get a grasp on the stakes

In advance of watching this I will say that I hate how:
    - They nerfed him
    - They humiliate him time and time again and forget what makes him such a fun villain and a compelling character for the sake of comedy because apparently they're uncreative now.
    - They basically shoved him into a bad wattpad fanfiction - and that's an insult to wattpad fanfiction, imo.
    - They had him get buff when part of his aesthetic appeal and what makes him stand out in contrast to Thor is that he's slender... and all that for some fanservice shorts?
    - They basically replace him with all those variants including a Mary Sue-esque female Loki variant who isn't even called Loki like what???
    - They got him to date himself in female form basically which I think took away the opportunity for the other half to be a positive influence on him - not to change him, people change themselves, they can't just be changed at the drop of a hat by someone... just encourage him to be like "and you know what, this probably isn't the best way to go about life" and then stumble towards a better solution, kind of like Frigga's affection made him want to avenge her and made him, if reluctantly, join forces with his brother again. (Even if he also ultimately utilised it to steal he throne for himself, that was still kind of progress. And that kind of progress is probably always going to be slow and flawed, but that's also what keeps us on the edge of our seats.)
    - His bit with the character that basically could have been another good influence and adoptive father figure in his life was cut short imo...
    Also:
With a stretch you could say that he doesn't enjoy hurting people, he just enjoys the power and how it makes him feel like he's no longer just a shadow of anyone and that makes him feel a thrill without him necessarily needing to be a sadist... and with another stretch you could say that the sadist within him is influenced by the Thanos' and The Other's grip on him, BUT even then, the statement doesn't feel accurate, because he still takes SOMETHING from subjugating people and subjecting them to whatever violence he chooses in order to get what he wants - violence that didn't necessarily need to be part of the equation. In the very least he does not care that he hurt people when it isn't someone he doesn't already have a bond with. So... he's not a complete psychopath but he absolutely has some of those tendencies where he can shut off or even get a thrill out of things which should not thrill people or be ignored... And from THERE you could say he is redeemable, but not by making him out to be an innocent puppy. He is not an innocent puppy. He's endured his fair share of suffering but some of it was influenced or caused by him and even if the TVA would not have let him make any other choice, his actions were still one of his choices, no matter what they were influenced by. But how that scene is written seeks to strip away any remaining autonomy he has, any accountability and prevents Loki from developing in a meaninngful way where he goes from being this borderline antisocial (and I don't mean this as in "loner" or "awkward" I mean this as him struggling with empathy and remorse towards anyone who isn't Frigga and being a massively destructive bastard who is - no matter how much I like him - a menace to society and that's just reality) character to someone much more admirable, stable and hopefully even empathetic. Would be a nice slap in the face to the TVA, showing them that they can't dictate what Loki or anyone else will be and it could be done so much better than it was.
Also, Loki TELLS us he doesn't enjoy hurting people but... LOKI is a LIAR. In order for us to BELIEVE that was the case, we'd have to see that in action, proof that actually maybe it was just a facade, or that it was influenced by the control The Other or Thanos had over him. I love him but he IS a liar, there is no reason why we should believe that statement, no matter how much he's crying his eyes out because... he's the God of lies and mischief. He's telling this to Mobius who he could just be trying to manipulate into helping him. If only the audience could see his pain it would be slightly more believable because Loki is not aware of an audience and therefore, if he were expressing something on his own to himself it would have been more likely to be genuine. But with Mobius he has an audience that he is aware of. And we're aware that he's aware of it. Or we should be, anyway. So even disregarding the obvious pointers to the fact that he's lying from the previous movies, the decisions here are terrible because what could have been - if weak - an excuse for his reactions back then was never utilised, his scene doesn't feel genuine and this is coming from someone who has insencerity in his nature.
Also, Loki might feel self-loathing but that's not something you resolve by making him fall in love with himself like that. That's basically narcissism. Self love does not have a romantic angle. It's just an acceptance of oneself, acknowledgement of ones faults and weaknesses but also their strengths.
In response to none of the previous movies now mattering: Okay, but I think this whole phase of marvel with the different terrible shows and whatnot is definitely more of a Disney decision and without Disney taking up Marvel maybe this would have been handled with a little more care if nothing else. Because this show does not feel like the product of a studio that knows and loves the previous creations it made. I agree, this show makes the other movies feel redundant, which makes me wish that the show never existed. But I also think the reason behind this is more Disney than Marvel.
ALSO what an insult to Holding out for a Hero. It should not belong into a series like this, it deserved better.
Whenever I felt hyped and enjoyed the show it was because Loki was being Loki. Oh, and I guess I also liked Croco Loki, but... eh. Looking back the rest was lame. But that alone I guess made me desperate because I did go back on imdb to realise I rated that frickin' show 9/10... when now, having fully digested it all... I wouldn't rate it anything about a 5 and that's me being generous.
Okay, Miss Minutes spouts BS but I do like her in concept, especially with that voice. Tara Strong is one of my favourite voice actresses, honestly.
Okay BUT they might not note down regular things that would be found in those events, but a Kablooie candy could have been an abnormality there and could have been noted down as such. It would not have altered events in the sense that no extra person would have survived thanks to it, but it would not have fit in with the rest of the stuff from that timeline because it wasn't supposed to exist there. In that sense, the cross referencing could work to confirm a suspicion... but it probably wouldn't help in predicting when and where exactly to find Sylphie next, I don't think.
This show did everyone who worked on all those previous wonderful stories so dirty.

Showing Avengers Loki what will happen to him in an alternate timeline shouldn’t have any emotional impact on him. In this show’s defense, I think what they’re trying to go for is the trope seen in movies like: “A Christmas carol”, and “It’s a wonderful life” where the main antagonist or protagonist sees what life would be like if they made different choices. But like you said this show contradicts itself as the TVA states that free will doesn’t exist. And all actions to do something that goes against the TVA’s narrative will be pruned.
Dang this used to be my favorite Disney + show. Now I’ll have to turn off my brain to enjoy watching it.

A minor, ultimately pointless character design flaw that really bugs me about this show: Hiddleston grew out his own hair to play Loki, rather than wear a wig. And I really appreciate the dedication to being in character. But Hiddleston's hairline has retreated just a little bit, and it makes Loki look like he aged about a decade in the five minutes since he took the tesseract. Nothing anyone could do about it, and I suppose I actually prefer this to having Hiddleston in a wig, but it is a nitpicky thing that bugs me.

Loki was a good character originally because he was such a complex character. You almost feel bad for him because he's literally a walking tragedy. Due to his past that explained his morally grey nature and actions. It all motivated him to do awful things and you see his internal conflict. In the 1st Avengers you can see his struggle between his hunger for power and doing the right thing. Thor and Loki's confrontations very much display it briefly. They did not have to nuke Loki physically for him to grow emotionally. He's prince of Asgard with superhuman abilities, Jotun Frost Giant and extremely gifted with magic. Loki's personality should not have been effected so fast by watching a couple tapes.
The show Lucifer is a good example of a charming main character that's morally grey. If you haven't seen the show, Lucifer in the beginning starts out bad mostly. He sees others as a stepping stone to get what he wants and willing to intimate manipulate anyone. Lucifer loves to cause chaos and does favors for almost anyone with little regard to the consequences. As the series progresses he struggles with seeing his past mistakes, with deep rooted insecurities with bad family issues. The main love interest, he at first sees like a challenge and mystery. Throughout it all though you see his rage, sadness, grief, guilt and he's still just as powerful and ruthless when needed. But in the end he over comes his internal struggles, emotions, and is able to be vulnerable/ genuine. Lucifer also goes to therapy and with all of those scenes you can see the growth. It was a great way to have the walls come down to reveal a broken man without it being too forced or out of place. Even then though, he remains a force to be reckon with and uses his past trauma to fuel his mission to find justice. It definitely wasn't a perfect show, however Lucifer's demeanor and journey was very well done.
Honestly I would have rather seen Loki return to Earth in the show. Like instead of being locked up in the dungeons of Asgard, he is banished to Earth similar to Thor originally. There he is forced to make amends and slowly develops empathy while he copes with his hatred. From there introduce a love interest and raise the stakes so that he is given the choice to hurt people. That would show more growth rather than the set in stone timeline and variant thing. That would also give him more of a chance to showcase his true power and decide to help people rather than hurt. Then if you wanted family drama then you could add it in as he works to improve relationships around him. It would definitely be a bit better than the convoluted timeline plot and TVA thing. Hell, give him an office job if they wanted to do the office type setting lol.

    • @EverythingFan02

What Loki did once he got the tesseract, following that metaphor, is the equivalent of having a direct path from your jail cell to a non-extradition country, and instead hiding in a different area of the jail. If he is thousands of years old and familiar with 8 other realms, or as shown in the MCU, 10s if not 100s of other planets and civilizations, Loki just trying to flee would more probably leave the planet, like Classic/Old Loki did. He’s effectively on the run from SHIELD, Asgard, the Avengers, and Thanos after failing to secure Earth for him. Getting out of jail free would mean evading all of them. He grew up with the Bifrost, so interplanetary travel isn’t difficult or a daunting journey for him.
But, if he wanted to quickly regroup and conquer Earth while SHIELD was focussed on New York, it makes no sense to travel to the middle of a dessert, stop, leave his one trump card and means of escape in the sand, and make a speech to the first person he sees. We’ve seen how Loki tries to conquer, twice. He makes friends with powerful people, sets out to cripple the ruling body or military, send in an army when it’s weak, then step into the power vacuum he’s created. In Thor 1 as a prince he let the Frost Giants into Asgard, and usurped the throne once he got Thor banished for it and Odin was weak. In The Avengers, though he’s acting under Thanos’ orders after allying with him, he does something similar. He attacks Fury, gets the Tesseract, lets himself get captured after several more successful surprise attacks, then summons the Chitari once he can spawn them in the heart of one of the most important cities in the strongest country on Earth.
He also starts using a similar strategy in Thor Ragnorak, and we see how he responds after losing a fight. He retreats to a place he feels safe in, telling Heimdall to bring him and Thor back to Asgard after Hela outmatches them. Once he ends up on the planet the Grand Master rules, he becomes friendly with him so that he can live safely and comfortably until he can flee.

When red skull touched it, he got transported to the location of the soul stone seemingly. Loki never was shown using the tesseract correctly in the infinity saga. The only time is when Thor and him use a device encasing it to go home. Loki even needed a human scientist to teleport his army to earth. He tried using it and it backfired. But as for how he used it in a snap, his dad Howard did have lots of research on the tesseract and in fact the element that was synthesized for Tony's arc reactor was actually discovered by Howard from his research on the tesseract during ww 2. He didn't know how to synthesize it back then though with a mini hydron collider. So tony as research on the space stone or tesseract possibly more than Loki who had it in Odin's treasure room where he wasn't supposed to touch it as Odin could seemingly know whenever any one was in his treasure room. As for knowing how to do the snap it actually seems fairly forward-you make a wish almost and snap for it to come true. Gamora described it as making a thought become real with a snap. The power stone also seems easy to kinda use if you can withstand its power. Aether, space stone, mind stone, soul stone, and time stone seem to take more skill to use. The time stone has instructions and hand movements that control it seemingly.
      2) Again the snap seems to he a wish and then snap type process. He says he tried getting Nat back tho so not sure tbh
      3) Thanos was Gary stu for his ability to wield the stones. He just instantly knew how to use them even combos that we've never see. I'll excuse it and say he's been learning a lot about then off screen since he also knew where all of then were?
      4) Again Odin prob never had Loki play with the tesseract only read picture books about it. He seemed to have more of a fascination with the casket of eternal winters anyway so different blue box. He didn't use it in infinity war to teleport all the asgardians away from thanos so its consistent that he doesn't use it or know how to. Everyone else listed except for hulk who prob used Tony's data on the stones and he worked on the mind stone and tesseract in avengers and aou, so everyone else except thanos had experience with the stones. Again thanos prob did research but it is Gary stu writing for him that he knew where all stones were minus soul stone and also how to use them. The thing is that a lot of the complaints can be applied to superhero movies and comics in general. Most superhero comics don't make much sense. Like with weapons, with our technology today, we can build missiles that can hit targets hundreds of miles away. But the MCU has super advanced aliens using swords instead of just bombing their enemies to oblivion from orbit.
And the power and scale of things in comics is just ridiculous. For example, there are multiple characters on earth with the power to create entire universes but somehow earth still has all the same problems as the real world. In both DC and Marvel, earth is literally the most important planet in the universe. Out of the 100 billion planets in the Milky Way, and 2 trillion galaxies in the observables universe, earth is somehow the most important one. It's even more ridiculous in DC since the primary earth is basically the center of the multiverse.

Not really, superhero movies usually have a beginning, middle, end. Have rules so things make sense for the general audience. They work as a condensed version of the story, the character, and the world. When it changes the rules, and makes free will not matter, then it stops making sense and stops mattering. Someone eating the wrong sandwich creates a different timeline. This means there are 2 different kangs. One that exist in the tuna sandwich universe, and one that exists in the PB&J sandwhich universe. Then these kangs end up fighting each other. That's what leads to the multiversal war.

The Avengers get a pass for time travel because it was supposed to happen. Sure, but... while they put back everything they took at the exact moment so it was like it never happened, they still only took the Tesseract from the 70s (or 60s) because of Loki. Loki stole it and escaped, so their only option was to go further back. Why didn't that cause a timeline split itself? If they were meant to go back further than 2012, does that mean they were supposed to lose it some other way? Seems weird that there could be a version of events where Loki *wouldn't* take advantage of a free tesseract literally dropping at his feet while everyone else is distracted.
Edit: not to mention the fact that the TVA's job requires genuinely divine power, and they seem so weak. If you exist outside time you should be able to see it all at once. They shouldn't be dealing with constant variants changing time from their approved fates. If anything, they should be crossing things off a near infinite list, religiously working towards the day their lizard overlords (who literally look nothing like lizards so I still don't know where that nickname came from) have promised where only one version of history exists. There shouldn't be any "real time" deadline on branching if you exist outside time. Sure, you can only enter in the initial moments after the branch grows, but why does it matter how long it grows if you can still go into those first moments? They aren't acting urgently in episode 2 because logically it doesn't matter at all how long they take to go there because they have fucking time machines.

You fail to see the truth as the video also did. TVA is a lie, stop relying on their statements and their information as fact, even their leaders were nothing but fake robot thingies.
Also, an explanation for the avengers timeline would be this, TVA exists outside the realm of that timeline, not sure if it is indeed outside all space time as they claim since they are a huge lie. Remember that Cap only goes back to live with Peggy because he was already going back that far to return the tessaract. Marvel (especially the shows) has an obsession with forcing love interests and shoving in romance plots into stories for characters that don’t need romance. Same thing with Moon Knight. It ruins the escapism and the focus of the overall plot. Loki was meh for me until I learned that Sylvie would be the “villain”. It got sooo predictable once she came in. It literally took me a year to finish the series bc once Sylvie got included, it was too painful to watch. The only good part for me was the last scene of the last episode when he realized he was in another universe. Everything else was a snore. And Loki is one of the most interesting characters played by one of the best actors of the Marvel cast. Such a waste. Great job on the video and breakdown. You put more effort into this than a multi-billion dollar company put into this series.

I haven't finished the video yet and i agree with most, if not everything you've said, and i would like to comment on this part as someone from the lgbt community and explain why this scene actually does more harm than good for representation.
First we need to understand the impotance of representation in media, seeing your identity on the big screen does have a very real impact, it starts the conversation of acceptance and respect in a world that has looked down on minorities for too many years, i cannot describe with words the comfort i feel when i see what is such a big part of my identity being portrayed in my favorite shows or movies, thats why i hate how they brought up his sexuality.
They made such a lazy and borderline disrespectful attempt at showing loki's bisexuality, they literally said 3 words alluding to the fact that he has had male partners and expected us to just eat it up, "wow, praise disney and their initiative to break down the stigma around bisexuality, they trully do care about us!", its outrageous to see them being worshiped online for something so insignificant. I am bisexual, and i've lived the struggle of not being accepted, not being taken seriously, i've lost friendships over just being myself, and i am disgusted at how they minimized all of that into 3 words.
And not only did they mess up the bisexual rep, they also completly ignored Loki's gender! The comic's never shy away from loki being gendefluid, series like Agent Of Asgard embrace the fact that loki cant be put in a box, he's the god of mischief! the trickster! he can be the villain one day and the hero the next day! everything about who he is can change, his motivations, his relationships with others, his gender expression, and yet he will still remain Loki. When i saw that the whole twist was that the Loki varient was a woman, aka sylvie, i was speechless, woman loki has been a thing for years, and she isnt a different character, she is still loki, and yet they put so much emphasis on the fact that Sylvie doesn't consider herself a Loki. In the episode when Loki meets all the other loki varients after being pruned, he asks them if they had ever seen a woman Loki before, and they all laugh at they idea, they laugh, because the idea of a woman Loki is just so ridiculous right?
I'm tired of seeing companies, specially Marvel, being able to do the bare minimum and get praise, we in the lgbt community deserve to be taken seriously, we have fought for our rights and im sick of seeing all our pain get boiled down to underdeveloped side characters and rainbow merch during June, especially considering the amount of homophobia, racism and misogony present in the marvel fandom, Disney doesnt care to educate its audience or to help out minorities, they will do whatever is necessary to make money, and the worst part is, we allow it.
Hopefully i was able to get my point across, english isnt my first language and i have to admit i may be a bit biased considering im both bisexual and genderfluid, i will continue the video now, great work man!

This is a pretty good breakdown of many of the glaring issues with the show! Something I don't know if many people are aware of is exactly why the writing is so weird and 99% of the time the characters and plot feel completely out of line with established lore... the script was written by waldron years ago before he got the job and he basically changed a few names and toned down his weird sexual spin on stuff somewhat. The original script is out there, and boy is it one of the most awful things ive ever had the displeasure of exposing my eyes and brain to. It was a TV series for Loki.... not written about Loki.
There's some stuff you've missed or simply had to cut a bit short (i'm assuming for time or because they're only really discussed in the really deep zones of the fan community), like the weird lack of communication and constant mixed signal statements from various people involved in the production (the lead writer, director, composer, and actors all having completely different conflicting public statements about the relationship going on there in particular, and the weird terf-y vibed comments from the director and Sylvie's actress), the fact the lead writer has admitted he hasn't seen the first Thor movie and hasn't seen Avengers 1 since release when he's writing a character that's come straight from those films and whose backstory has been retconned back to that point... there's a lot of weird stuff going on with marvel and disney, and messy bts stuff which has caused their stuff to really suffer, and I think this series in particular just kinda exemplifies how bad all of that stuff really is.
My one real grievance with the video however is in you saying that Loki doesn't care for anyone but Thor and Frigga/ that he doesn't care about hurting people. While I definitely agree that he is a ruthless character who's shown to somewhat enjoy killing/ harming others at times, there's also a lot of times (especially in Thor 1) where he has shown to care a lot more about others getting hurt than even Thor does. I agree that the way the show framed the idea of "I don't enjoy hurting people" was done totally wrong for the established character, there was some element of the truth there. He's a quick, efficient killer raised in a culture that only respects violence, and so it is to be expected that he take some satisfaction in his success on that front, but the only time we really see him seem to actually enjoy inflicting pain and dragging it out and not simply eliminating an opposing force as quickly as possible is him taking out the guy's eye in A1. I know it's still heavily debated if it's actually canon or not that Loki was influenced by the scepter during that movie, and also if he intentionally bungled his plan or if that was just poor writing leaving a lot of plot holes, but as far as i'm aware it's canon that he's just had a large enough mental breakdown to have attempted suicide and suddenly had a massive change in his behaviour, and had then been tortured on Thanos's orders during the time between Thor 1 and Avengers 1, which helps explain the difference in his behaviour between those two movies.
I think that keeping either side of that debate in mind changes drastically how he is perceived, and I honestly kinda think that having him be a puppet villain during A1 would have made Thanos a far more imposing and impactful villain, and also been good fuel for Loki to either have a better continued villain arc in response to that situation without it feeling weirdly contrived or to have a true redemption and become more of an anti-hero/ fun nuisance like he is in most of the comic stories, but I also love the idea of an unrepentant villain version of the character who's just succumbed to the events he's been through in T1 and leading up to A1 and let it turn to rage. Sadly, we got neither with the series, and I cannot truly explain just how disappointed I am with the opportunity the squandered here.
With season two on the horizon, and knowing there's a different head writer this time I have a little more faith in the potential direction of it but even if they do miraculously make something good, it's still going to be built on the terrible foundations of this season, and unless they straight up pretend season 1 never happened, I don't think there's any way they could do something that would solve the failure of storytelling that was this show.
TLDR: This show was terrible in so many ways and the more you look into it the worse it gets. Learning about the behind the scenes issues and general problems that come from being a disney project written by someone with no idea what they were doing will not make you feel sympathy for the creators, it will simply confuse and anger anyone with two brain cells to rub together

    • @teresar6348
      @teresar6348 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed.
Under the assumption that Loki was influenced in Avengers, it makes sense maybe to not wanna be a mass murderer? Especially since if he was under mind control that just got hulk smashed out of him. Though I'd believe it when Loki says it a bit more if he was a bit hazy/shocked from the avengers scene to this point (hell that could be used as a reason he got caught more easily, facing what he did now with his whole mind, and getting quite the smashing)
Plotting a Mischief != Brutal murder always woulda felt more realistic. Loki's earlier pranks was scaring with snakes, the worst he did pre his whole revelation was try to stop Thor's coronation, out of belief that wasn't gonna go well and that he couldn't just convince Thor of that.

25:02 To be fair, comic readers like me are used to the idea of multiple infinity stones, the multiverse is a thing after all. In the comics, every universe has 6 infinity stones but the stones only work in their native universe. So if you take the MCU stones and bring them to another universe they won't work, they'll just be pretty paperweights, which is what the show was referencing. Then again the multiverse wasn't established yet until the end of the show, but MCU writing is mostly garbage anyway, Infinity War is the exception not the rule.

My biggest critique is that avengers era Loki, the loki that literally murdered random people, almost took over earth and killed coulson... has a dramatic heart change because of slideshow presentation because the plot needed to go along. What would've been interesting is if loki stayed mischevious and paranoid throughout the show, adding more tension and weight to the relationship between Loki and Owen Wilson. Forcing them to work together and learn to trust each other even tho Loki keeps using him to his own advantage. That is until he meets the "main protagonist" which instead of being sylvie its old man loki, who serves as a nihilistic and serious version of loki that is used as a warning to Loki at what he would become if he succeeded in taking over earth. Loki then must discover Old Loki wishes to destroy the TVA because fate is already decided and thus none of this is worth anything. This is when both Lokis must learn that fate and destiny is not set, but rather decided and its the choices we make that decide our future.

One thing that I can accept is the whole idea of hiding in an apocalypse scenario. Because what we do know is that there is some wiggle room with the whole branching thing. The Sacred Timeline doesn't appear as one straight path, but more like a base set of events that can go slightly different. So for something where your influence is absolutely insignificant, like the placing of bodies in Pompeii, there wouldn't be a Nexus event. On this, I'd say the animation in episode 1 is overexaggerating or simplifying the concept. There can be some influence in the timeline that won't make it branch, as long as it's tiny. Because the timeline doesn't dictate the smallest details like placement of deaths in an apocalypse. As long as it has the same base end result in a way that can't cascade, you can be hiding in something like an apocalypse.
