McShane is the most widely ranging talent to ever fill a relatively narrow casting window that I know of. No matter who or what he portrays, I find myself feeling that ‘that’ is who he really is. It’s the damnedest thing really. He’s a masterful talent! (edit:) ‘Deadwood’ never really ‘ended’. Even with the movie, not returning for a fourth (or more) season, left WAY too many unanswered questions. There was such enthusiasm about the movie after a 13 year hunger for more, that there were too many things needing to come to an end.

I have and will forever feel we were robbed of a fourth season, at a minimum.
Know what you're saying.. but often times it's best when you feel like a story left something unsaid! Either way, great show
The idiot “executives” at HBO care not about the fans. It was such a brutal kick in the guts when it was cancelled, I’m still upset about it 20 years on!
Deadwood, The Wire & Band of Brothers. That's the list. With Ian McShane being the finest written/acted character of them all.
Al was one of the best characters ever put on television- loved Deadwood and loved Ian as Al - such a sad day when it ended.
The constantly evolving story that Ian describes, developed with many engaged, talented people contributing under excellent leadership, must be one reason Deadwood was so affecting a tale.
Always been a great actor. Does a truly sinister portrayal of Teddy Bass in sexy beast, arguably overshadowing Ben Kingsley, despite being a smaller role. Top man.
Great insight. Ian did make Deadwood so utterly brilliant and riveting. Nice interview, well done.
Swedgin!
IKR Hahahaha. The Wu telling 'Swedgin' the heroin was stolen is a classic.
Wu and his fucking pigs
"The cocksucka stole your dope, that was intended for me? I find cocksucka!"
"Heng Dai"!
@@1justinswift Heng Dai, fucking Wu! Heng Dai.
I feel extremely privileged to have witnessed this prescious gem of a production, made the mistake of watching it whilst convalescing from abdominal surgery, It was a scene between Al and EB, I honestly thought my time had arrived whilst I attempted to hit the mute button as I was rendered helpless from laughter on the floor bursting stitches and almost rupturing myself in the process.
sweet memories.
Love this interview show. Watching deadwood for the first now and Holy shit is Ian amazing in it. Thanks for the interview.
Wow I’m absolutely blown away hearing the intro!
What a fantastic actor!
One of the best shows I've ever seen, and I've seen all the top ones. Al Swearengen... What an incredible character!
One of the greatest television rolls of all time. HBO had so many heavy hitters!
I was late coming to this show, although I was aware of it and had wanted to see it for several years. I've just finished both the box set and the film and I'm going cold turkey! Loved it so much and all the characters, Seth Bullock, Charley Utter, Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, Cy, Joanie, Mrs Ellesworth, E.B. etc but Ian McShane was simply marvellous as Al. So much so that I wish GEM was my local pub!!! Now I want to see anything related to this show on youtube. Great to see Ian in this interview.
I never saw this series until I ordered the set on DVD. I worked night so this was the best way. This is the finest show I have ever seen. Once I got used to the language, I was riveted until the end...wishing of course it would go on and on. Canceling it was a huge mistake
Most underrated show ever
was even great in Lovejoy. yes, i said it!
I love Lovejoy.
Lovejoy began my love of Antiques!
Judge Porceddu I love that show
Judge Porceddu LOVEJOY!!! Still love it so much!
Just bought the box set.
Al Swearingen is one of my favorite characters and McShane was a PHENOMENAL actor. He has the best lines, dry hot wit.
I was heartbroken and felt truly cheated when it abruptly ended. Terrible shame.
Sure miss this series...amazing show
One of the best out there. I still recall episodes of Lovejoy. Such a talent.
I adored this series when I was young. It got my interest in in antiques. I am 80 now and searching for these films again. You were brilliant thank you Ian.
Ian McShane is a truly great actor. Even here, I was a little wary that he might suddenly turn into Al Swearengen......
One of McShanes finest roles. Always enjoy watching and listening to him.
Phenomenal interview! Great job! Ian McShane is one of the best human beings on this planet!
I was so lucky to bump into Ian McShane years ago(90's)when I was at JFK heading back to the UK. He took time to stop and chat, such a nice bloke.
Deadwood is one of my favorite shows,. I'm looking forward to the movie
Al was truly the best character on cable tv I ever watched and I’m 65 years old hands down !
Ian's delivery of his character's dialogues and monologues were a gourmet delicacy to my ears. Exquisite
SWEGGIN!....!!!.. HANGDAI....! I LOVED THE SERIES, THE GREAT ACTORS AND CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE MOVIE!
An unmatched absolute legend in the craft.
I’m watching it now. Just started Season 3. Al is mesmerising. Haven’t seen anything like it until Succession.
Love this guy. Helluva actor.
One of the best actors I've ever had the pleasure to watch.
I remember Mr. McShane as Judas Iscariot in the 1977 television Movie "Jesus Of Nazareth". Fine actor, there.
Pillars of Earth too!
First time I saw him was Lovejoy
So dodgy🤣
Every actor if lucky enough comes to a part that crystallises their talent and craft and so it was with Ian McShane and Deadwood. I’ve been following his career since Battle Of Britain in 1970 and his light Brit drama 1990s Lovejoy was such a delight. An incredible turn in Sexy Beast and then Deadwood which was probably the best series of the old West and imo the best villain ever with a human side👌
Ian McShane's performance in "Deadwood" is fucking perfection.
God bless him.
To me, Deadwood is still THE drama series to suggest to people. To say that it's well done and the acting was great would be a severe understatement.
HBO execs: we’re cancelling Deadwood and Carnival.
Customers:
Dumbfounding decisions
Carnivale is bad
so much potential
John from Cincinnati was very weird
@@michaellalli7693 yes, but I did want to see where it was going.
I watch the series again last month. It is a pure master piece. Ian's dialogue at times and his delivery are so intoxicating. Goes from fine poetic brilliance to brutal, shit smelling mining camp violence, as it was in those times.
