  • There are plenty of I.T. Career Paths to consider, but for many people, a career in information technology starts with a role in a help desk capacity. But where does one go next? How do you become a systems administrator? How do you use the help desk as the starting point in I.T.?
Mapping out an I.T. Career Path is an important task that most people forget to do. As a result, their career in information technology is not progressing the way it could be.
In this video, I will show you how to use your first job at a help desk as the catapult into a highly rewarding career in I.T. - Some of the best IT (information technology) career paths for beginners should also give you enough job opportunities later to develop a successful tech career. Get into IT with a role in a help desk.

Hey Christoph, just want to say thank you for all the videos. I have found your channel a couple months ago and have watched most of your videos. I am really grateful for your advice and knowledge as I am passionate about advancing my career quickly. I'm currently completing the CompTIA Trifecta (A+, Net+, Sec+) and looking for my first help desk job. If you think it's useful, could you go more in-depth on advancing your career from the help desk starting point. How long should you work a position? Or what steps you should take to advance your career given the paths that you indicated (certifications/experience)?

    Hi Chrisoph.
Firstly, thanks for this video, it's given me a much better insight into what I can venture into next.
Secondly, I was wondering if I could get your advice? I've been doing 1/2nd line jobs for about 6 years now but I'm stuck on what I want to dive deeper into, any suggestions?
Also, you got a new subscriber 👍🏾

After 10 years in help desk I never really went anywhere even with certification, so I left it and became a software engineer.

Im a PC deployment tech right now. Hope to get my Net+, Sec+, and maybe CCNA before my contract ends in 8 months. I want to be a network engineer or technician.

    Hi Christoph!
Thanks for the career path, really helpful. In your own experience or maybe from someone that you know, what’s the next step to go from HelpDesk to Network Admin/Engineer ? I have my Network+ and am studying for my CCNA now. After acquiring the CCNA what do you feel like the job titles/roles I would be looking for; is it more Network Engineer or Network Technician NOC position?
    Thanks again

    • @ITCareerGuide
      @ITCareerGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I would be careful with a network technician and closely read the job description and the tasks you are asked to do. I would aim at positions like network engineer or network administrator. Of course, a year in a NOC can be great learning opportunity and help to build a solid foundation. Foregoing instant gratification could have a big payoff down the road, but I do not enough about where you are in life and what your long-term goal is.

i have an associate's of applied science in computer programming (tech school)
also working on data analytics certification with Google. i have a large portfolio with all sorts of software programs. I'm gonna shoot for I.T help desk since competition is so big in software engineering field. then hopefully lateral over.

@@michaeljimenez7283 i actually did not follow this path.
i didnt get the google cert.
i just made a website to add to my portfolio and i got a job back in Feb 2022 as a software engineer with a small company. it was only 50k annual, but i worked for 8 months and got a new job at a home insurance company as a software engineer making 75k. and then this past Jan i got a raise to 85k.
i kinda just worked my way up slowly. i have just about 2.5 total years experience as of today.

If you do another, maybe include salary ranges for each role. I know it can't be 100%, but would make it more interesting to look at.

Going into IT has got to be the stupidest thing I have done. Undergrad in Information Systems, have been shuffling Help Desk jobs for 8 years. Got my A+ Cert, ITIL cert.
Have tried my hand at learning MCSA, N+, Python, SQL, ugh. But nothing has panned out. I would tell younger people especially at the before college point. Really really think about what you wanna do. If you want IT, do Computer Science and become a Programmer cause those are the only folks that actually make money and don’t always have to work stupid 24/7 on call rotation every 3 weeks.
