    This was great. I came into the Church last Easter. My wife and kids remain Protestant. I am a former Protestant minister and was educated at a good Christian university with a great theology department. Episodes like this one really get me excited, where the guest is able to make connections in Scripture that I never heard (nor would have made sense) when I was a Protestant. Thank you for these videos and for all of your ministry. In my first short year as a Catholic I've encountered intense difficulties, some of which have even made me question my faith altogether (I haven't been to Mass since September and now that I'm finally feeling the draw back to Mass I can't go!). Apostolates like yours, Trent Horn's, and others have kept me connected to the Catholic/Christian world while I've been wandering in the desert the past few months. Words can't express how much your work means to me and the profound impact you are having on our world and culture for our Lord. Hope you and your bride are on the mend and feeling better. - Benjamin

    Absolutely LOVED this!
    Really wish he could have explored more deeply, how the post-Baal Mosaic covenant is less analogous to the New Covenant, than was the pre-Baal Mosaic covenant or the Davidic or Abraham covenant. That makes a lot of sense and I think really helps make sense of Gal3 and a lot of other stuff in Paul (Rom2 and 3; all of 2Cor; etc) Also the sacrifice of sin-offering and guilt-offering of being different and not the only sacrifices (peace, thank, etc)
    I also LOVE that he smacked down the whole "SeConD TeMpLE jUdAism was reductively eArthly and PoLiTiCaL!" thing that's in ever Jesus-movie. And LOVE that he smacked down the whole notion that the "Palestinian Jewish canon" was consistent and was the same as the Protestant OT canon.

    Reading the Bible can be very daunting, especially with a job and kids. I think to get into the Bible, you need real quiet time, even if it's only 10 to 15 min. a week.
    One thing that really helped motivate me, was what a priest said to me: you can't really be a family if you don't have a common history. Only rules will not a family make, you need a personal link and commonality. So, in order to fully be part of the Catholic family, you have to understand the history (so as to have a "shared past and memories"), and this starts with the Bible.
    Understanding the overall narrative and how the books connect is key. Protestants have done a great job at this, and we Catholics have been behind, but people like Hahn or Cavins are great ressources. I'm also a huge fan of Pitre, though I'd start out with a "smaller book" (like Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist). Thanks to them, I've found the experience of reading the Bible so much more exciting and extremely rich.
    Finally, imagination. When reading a passage, I like to stop and really think about what I've read. Where are the people? What does the landscape look like? How is the weather? What is the historical context in the passage and worldwide? What kind of food are they eating? Thinking about banal things like those, have strangely made the reading less dry and more engaging.
    One last thing that worked for me, was starting out slow, really slow. I started out with the Magnificat and just the Sunday readings and meditate on that throughout the week. Then, daily readings, and grew from there.
    Hope everyone is doing ok in these strange times and God bless.

    It's great to see many Roman Catholics getting back into the Scriptures since Vatican II. That's definitely at least one positive point of the council. Many people forget that before Luther's German translation of the Bible, there were as many as 17 translations into German or a German dialect. (Although they were translations of a translation and not into common everyday German like Luther's Bible)
    Wycliffe's translation was authorized by clerical authorities at the time as well. Unfortunately, due to the Reformation and counter reformation, translations in the vernacular were forbidden. There was a time when it was a crime here in France to sing the Psalms in French. All the way into the 1950s, Bible reading (outside of the missals) was highly discouraged. For example, the Jesuit priest Pierre Gibert recounted an incident in a Catholic high school in 1952 where it was required that all books, aside from the textbooks and the missals were to be presented to the school director for written approval. He was offered a Catholic Bible at that time (Cardinal Liénard) and felt he might look silly asking for approval. But when he did he was told in no uncertain terms to put "that book" deep in his drawer and keep it there till he returned to his parents. There are many similar stories, although obviously there was no official ban at the time.
    In that sense, Vatican II is a welcome development.

    • @christophekeating21
      @christophekeating21 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gerardomartinez6226 Indeed it was. That didn't stop reading the Bible from being highly discouraged in conservative Catholic circles up into the mid 20th Century, and for a time in France (1685 until 1787) both owning a French Bible and singing the Psalms in French was forbidden, because the Huguenots were forbidden.

    • @gerardomartinez6226

      @@christophekeating21 I think it had more to do with the illegal translations Protestants were using. They're not the same bibles we Catholics use. I could be wrong.

    • @christophekeating21
      @christophekeating21 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gerardomartinez6226 you're right, but the thing is, because of the context of the religious wars, it basically meant everyone with a Bible in French was suspected of being a Protestant. Again, Wycliffe's translation (from the Latin Vulgate) was authorized by the religious authorities, then banned. Desiderius Erasmus remained a Catholic his whole life, but his writings were later considered heretical, and so on. Of course I have a biased perspective being a Protestant myself, but André Gibert who relates the story is a Jesuit priest.
      And the Bible du Cardinal Liénard is most definitely a Catholic Bible.

    Hey Matt, when trying to get into reading the Bible take into consideration that Jesus used the scriptures as a weapon of warfare against Satan when he was tempted in the desert. He repeatedly responds “it is written” to the attacks of the devil. Ephesians 6:11-12 says “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm” One of those weapons is the word of God which is the sword of the Spirit. Love the show!

    This was good. I largely agreed.
    However, it seemed narrow. Pretty much all Western Christianity. Very limited reference to Church Fathers. I know, I know, this show tips its hat to Aquinas. I get it. But, man...it’s like Eastern Christianity doesn’t exist. I wonder what the guest thinks Fathers like Maximus the Confessor or Gregory of Nyssa have to say related to the themes he outlined. There was some guarded charity given to Protestants, but, again, that “tradition” is just another side of the same coin.

    Very poor arguments with swearing.
    1) The fundamental principle of morality, as you know, is that one may never do evil that good may come. If it's not good, it doesn't matter what it accomplishes. That's about 70% of what you guys argued. 2) I've heard exorcists talk about how vulgar language is an invitation to demons. Small crack in the door, but a door nonetheless. 3) Vulgarity is plainly unbecoming of the dignity of humans, especially those cleansed by baptism and on the pilgrimage to heaven. 4) There are clear scriptural injunctions that there be *no* unclean speech among you and to discipline and master the tongue. 5) The culture is increasingly crass, and we cannot be contributing to it. The crassness and vulgarity is constantly aiding our rapid moral decay. 6) It's rarely a good sign when a Christian starts to feel comfortable engaging publicly in swearing, particularly on social media. *So woke!* 7) We should want to not just avoid sinning when we speak but actually honour Him through our words. Swearing as an option quickly dissipates when seen through that lens.
    This all said, most people will still swear (me included), but as an inadvertent sin, not a justified one. I repent immediately, almost completely avoid swearing when anyone else would hear, especially the young & innocent, and then I confess it. I can tell when I haven't been to confession in a while because the habit comes back. It is obviously not the worst of sins, and there are people I love with a bad habit of swearing who are in many ways better people than me.
    But we need to better in at least our principles, and the fact that this discussion also destroys basic Christian principles of morality is disturbing. Call me a prude, but these seemingly little sins have a much bigger effect than we'd like. It matters. Clean up your mouths, Christians.
