    When you make an aluminum-gallium alloy and put it in water it reacts, and creates aluminum oxide and hydrogen. The escaping hydrogen was what caused the bubbling and sizzling noise.

    • @peterheyes7588
      @peterheyes7588 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +unwoundkiller you get all the gallium back from that reaction too. It annoyed me how this guy described why he was scratching the surface material though. Aluminium is a very reactive metal on its own, to the extent that it will create a very thin layer of fairly nonreactive aluminium oxide, hes scratching this layer of so that the gallium can be exposed to the pure aluminium so that it can create the alloy. I don't know why no one ever called it Galluminium though...

But why would a company make a phone with a low melting point? Therefore you must assume it isn't molten aluminum because he is touching it with his bare hands.

      Lithium Ion batteries have a non corrosive electrolyte consisting of a solvent which is usually Ethylene Carbonate or Dymethyl Carbonate. Touching it is actually under most circumstances, will not cause that much damage to skin. It's mildly toxic and can cause skin irritation similar to a rash, but certainly not going to eat your skin or damage it in a few seconds. It is wickedly flammable though, and can cause spectacular explosions and fires with very small amounts. It certainly is far less harmful then paint stripper. Speaking of which, if it contains methylated spirits or methanol, can cause permanent blindness and kidney damage simply by prolonged skin contact.

    • @aferal4575

      No but he probably broke the battery, letting the litium inside get in contact with air and producing the smoke (which is toxic). The only reaction between gallium and aluminium is that the gallium diffuse ions and broke the aluminium structure, making it a lot more weaker (I think it's how it happening)

    1. Gallium melts at 85 °F
    2. You didn't have to use all 500 grams of gallium, 5 would have been more than enough to completely eat the aluminum away given enough time
    3. The Gallium allowed the water to have an exothermic reaction with the water letting off Hydrogen Gas.

      +Mind Blow that it does but rubbing your hands through what is essentially at that point a aluminum/gallium mix is not smart especially since the full toxicity of gallium is still not fully known. Nurdrage is a scientist and still wears gloves while handling the stuff

  • @rachelpurity1

    It sizzled because Gallium and Aluminium when bond (which was what you did, you made an alloy) react extremely quickly with water.
    The reaction is so strong (and the gallium alloy recoverable afterwards), that people are researching something to make this a fuel of the future.

      He doesn't want the gallium to seep into the phone itself, but he wants the gallium to seep into aluminium. He's scratching it to remove aluminium-oxide that formed on the surface of aluminium, also to remove any coating that the aluminium might or might not have and to give the gallium more surface area of pure aluminium so it can alloy with it quicker.

      +Marko Apatovic alloy with it quicker ,it will chemical react but it won't alloy

    • @markoap91
      @markoap91 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not actually sure if it alloys or reacts. You're probably right, tho. Thanks for the correction. The rest of what I said still stands. Regardless if it's alloying or reacting, a bigger contact surface will speed things up.

    • @KingNast
      @KingNast 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kyler Janovec It does form an alloy. It just seeps into the aluminum grain structure

    • @or2kr

      The thing is, the title says "What happens if you pour gallium on an iPhone 6", but he then scratches it, which makes the title untrue. He just could've taken an aluminium block and scratched it, to see the results of the reaction.
