The DUCHESS at York!! 6233 Duchess of Sutherland. York Yuletide Express.30th November 2019

The York Yuletide Express. Originally due to be hauled outward from Ealling Broadway to York by 60009 Union of South Africa and the return by 6233 Duchess of Sutherland.
However as the A4 's repairs weren't completed in time, the outward leg was diesel hauled.
In this video we start with scenes on the yard at the NRM with The Duchess being coaled, and leaving for York Holgate sidings.
Later, after the light had gone,diesel, class 47, 47804, brings the ECS and 6233, back into the station, before The Duchess leaves with the tour, back to Ealling Broadway.

6233 is a magnificent loco awesome engine and a great engine I enjoy working on her cleaning her up when she is on shed at the West shed in Derby shire and I love the Duchess of SUTHERLAND

This brings back childhood memories, as I regularly stayed with my grandmother, who lived literally feet away from the West Coast main line. I even have a recollection of seeing a Duchess in her streamlined casings, painted in wartime black.

Great video. I had the good fortune on Saturday to be on the Tadcaster Road when she went past. The dark but crystal clear night sky reverberated to the unmistakable sound of her pistons going, the smoke and steam illuminated white by the lights of Tesco car park, and it stopped me in my tracks to enjoy her as she slowly disappeared into the distance......I can recall as a child the end of steam, and still all these years later it has the ability to stop people in wonderment.......

Over here in the States, we like our engines black (or at least some do). British trains are far more beautiful, whereas ours are more utilitarian. Those Peppercorn Pacific's have got to be the most beautiful machines ever constructed. I happen to like them in the Burgundy Red with the matching train!!! I'm a retired engineer on the Union Pacific!!! For beauty, our Big Boy can't touch a British Pacific, but for pulling, I would bet on the Big Boy!!!

Nice shots Phil, beautiful looking locomotive, caught her at Par in the summer, unfortunately Royal Duchy was diesel hauled but Duchess followed later so wasn't fully disappointed.

They blow steam through the cylinders to warm them up so water doesn't condensate in them, thats why you see alot of steam coming out, reason is water doesn't compress and will crack the cylinders if left in there.

Thanks Alan. No average height and no steps. I hold my camera up high using a monopod. Great to get above crowds or 6 feet fences. Steam looked great in the dark, but I was glad when she had left, it was getting quite cold stood round waiting!
