साइलेज बनाने से हरा चारा काफी समय तक अपनी गुणवत्ता को बनाए रखता है। यह दुधारू पशुओं को आसानी से पचता है और साथ ही यह उनकी उत्पादन क्षमता को भी बनाए रखता है। हरे चारे वाली फसलें जैसे मक्का, ज्वार, बाजरा, मीठी सुडान घास तथा जई आदि से अच्छा साइलेज बनाया जा सकता है जबकि बरसीम, रिजका, लोबिया आदि दलहनी फसलों से अच्छा साइलेज नहीं बन पाता क्योंकि इनमें जल की मात्रा ज्यादा होती है परन्तु कुछ उपाय के बाद इनका भी साइलेज बनाया जा सकता है। साइलेज बनाने लिए मक्का, ज्वार व जई को प्रारम्भिक या बीच की अवस्था में काट कर छेाटे-छोटे टुकड़े बना लेने चाहिए। इससे हरे चारों के सूखने की प्रक्रिया में तेजी आएगी और चारे में नमी केवल उतनी रह जाएगी जितने में भंडारण के दौरान फफूंदी का प्रकोप न हो। अत: चारे को गड्डे में डालते समय इसमें 65 से 70 प्रतिशत नमी रहे। आमतौर पर साइलेज बनाने के समय चारे में शुष्क पदार्थ 30 से 40 प्रतिशत तक रहना चाहिए। साइलेज बनाने वाले घुलनशील में खमीर बनाने की क्रिया होते समय अम्ल (पी. एच. 4.2) काफी मात्रा में रहे और वह चारे को खराब होने से बचाए। मक्का आदि से साइलेज बनाते समय यदि 500 ग्राम यूरिया प्रति क्विंटल चारे में मिलाया जाए तो साइलेज में प्रोटीन मात्रा बढ़ सकती है।

yes i guess cows-sheep-goats could survive on only silage..
but it would be like humans eating only potatos.. hehehe
good corn silage have a bit more nutrients than potatos since the silage contain the whole plant, stalk-leafes-corn-stalk..... but a total mix ration for say a milking cow at a big farm contain-- corn silage-haylage-hay-straw-, and somtimes minerals-vitamins

If green fodder is not adequate can we feed the dairy cows like this daily:
1. 10-15 kg Green Fodder
2. 10 KG Corn Silage
3. 4-5 Kg Paddy Straw
4. 8 KG Concentrate Feed (20 liter milk Yielding cow)
well im no expert, but on the goat-cow-sheep farms i have workd on here in norway they usually dont make much corn silage, norway is to cold for corn ,, we use mostly hay silage as food during winter, somtimes mixd with some dry hay...
but milking cows-goats also get some concentrate feed
but silage is a new invention.. when i grew up in northern norway in the 1960s the sheep there got mainly dryed hay during winter + some seeweed for salt-minerals. and boild fish heads from the fish factory. hehe
it was back breaking work, cutting the gras with hand scytes and making hay fences to dry the hay on

If you have inuff carbohidrates you do not need salt.Urea can give protein base,butt it is tricky to get right amount.Best bet is lactic bacteries who eat carbs and five lactoacid and give much faster fermentering.And blacto bacteries kill fungus and mold and help preserve the taste og silage.Houp it helps.We use korn silage for sheeps from October to April.
