I feel like I've seen you and your family go through the process to prep for silage so many times, that I could probably come out there and either do it myself or at the very least, be a considerable amount of help. 😂 You're educating a lot people, Eric! It's awesome! Edit: To be honest, while I didn't live on a farm myself, I was an extremely active FFA member in an agriculturally heavy area. I worked a lot of summers driving tractors, cutting fields, baling, and more. I do LOVE the smell of silage for some reason though.
@@michaelmckay that's the easiest part of the farming i think driving the tractors beside the combine is a little harder and putting the corn silage into the pit but atleast we know they know how todo their job good enough they're great at it

I enjoy watching dairy farming videos because I can relate to every aspect of it. I’ve done pretty much everything that dairy farmers do today, except I was born into dairy farming 61+ years ago. Everything about dairy farming and farming in general has improved so much since I was a boy, especially the equipment.
When I was a kid, our silage pits were cut in to the sides of a hill. We had 2, next to each other. I drove the load in, unloaded, and left while a guy packed, spread, and another watered. I always remember that sweet silage smell during the winter!!

Great video! Chopping is always my favorite time on our farm. I enjoy the fact that it's so fast paced and how coordinated the team has to be. Everybody has a specific job and they all do it well. You are dog tired at the end of the day but you ALWAYS have one or two funny stories at someone's ( usually the rookie) expense.
I never get tired of watching your farm work Eric. It is just relaxing. You must have quite a sum invested in plastic. Great to see all of the help working well together. Also it is interesting to learn the process of storing the silage properly. thanks so much for another great video.

I’m maybe too late Eric for this year but we use a double plastic layer. The first one is very thin and clear. Almost like Saran Wrap. It sucks down to the silage. We’ve used it for 5 years now. We pack with a magnum too- no sheep’s foot or second tractor. Last year we had one bucket of spoilage I think there was a hole in the plastic. Hope this helps someone. Its highly recommended by me.

I just ran across your videos about 30 minutes ago and I've already subscribed. First videos I watched were the manure robots. It has got to be extremely expensive to run a farm like this. Lots of work and lots more money. Us City dwellers don't realize how much work it takes for us to be able to open the fridge and have milk. Thanks.

Very good video as always! One thing we do on our farm is that we take some silage (old or new), put it in our food mixer and unload it on the side of the bunker. We usualy take old corn so we can do it before the harvest starts. Anyway, good luck for your futur videos and again, very good video you did there!

Awesome video!! I absolutely loved the drone shots showing the feed mixing right next to the bunk being filled. All work carries on on the farm no matter what. The vibratory sheepfoot drum roller is one of the best pieces of equipment for compaction of soil in construction. It isn't surprising it works great on silage.
Seems like some flood lights around those bunkers would be nice to have. Feeding in dark during the year but filling them in the dark in September would be nice to have some big flood lights. Just a thought. Good work Eric.

this is a small tip and prob won't help much cause you dont do it much. but when u roll out plastic roles like that it is a back breaker to bear crawl the entire way. so i use a 2 golf clubs, old ones. stick the head of each on on each side and just walk the roll. works very well and if u have a lot to spread its great

One of my favorite smells in the entire world. Brings back memories of riding with my grandpa pulling a 2 row silage cutter behind his 4430.
I think my grandpa would be amazed at how advanced the machines are ! They had a dairy too!

That "smell" used to be my favorite thing about cutting silage. That and fall apples! Those harvesters make the 2 row unit I used look small!
