Thank for these detailed tips. Mr Paul can you please compile a list of advantages and disadvantages of the different ways we can store silage for small holder farmers. .. 🎉6 adult cows and 2 heifars
Preserved nappier silage sometimes back but was not that good plus I didn't have the knowledge of how to add maize germ to balance the silage ,but with such practical and elaboration hope I will do better next round.
yes you can make silage with fresh cut napier grass...the reason it is left to dry is to reduce water content and increase dry matter which will increase total nutrition taken in by the animal
Why add molasses. Not need for fermentation. The bacteria have enough starch from the added maize bran. So if (plenty of) starch is available and than no sugar is needed. There is no one Europe adding molasses in maize silage, because it is full of starch. The idea of adding maiz germ is a very good one because also the the dry matter content is enlarged. Good for fermentation and good for energy level. Generally good fermentation you get with dry matter contents above 30%. We make a lot of grass silage in Holland and wilt it one or two days from 20% dm till 40% dm. Than we ensile without adding anything. (This is possible because our varieties of grass have enough sugar)
Most farmer still feed see it hard to feed full corn silage to their cows and hence wait till the maize has completely matured for harvest of dry maize and ensile stovers which are less in energy and hence molases is needed. In nappier, starch is low hence adding molases is a good idea. Im maize not needed coz it only adds a minimal energy to the fodder and facilitate remen microbs development
@@Farmwithpaul Showed you video today in Nepal, where all farmer feed loads of ricestraw, which is 'rubbish feed' into my opinion. Want to promote silage making of super napier or (full!) maize in bags
@@halbeklijnstra the best is maize silage full corn. But if you decide to use nappier, ensure to also use a good source of energy like broke maize. Its just not about filling the rumen its about quality feeds for high growth and production
Kindly advise me me if what am.planning to do will help me. I have bought poly sacks, want to chop ordinary grass from the bush, soak in salty water, let it dry a bit and pack in sacks store it in a dark sealed room. Kindly advise please❤
Silage is only to preserve and prevent the nappier from over growing and loosing nutrients. If yiu have to feed fresh first wilt for. Two days to prevet blot
If you start feeding ensure you feed daily. But in cases where you will have to live it for more than two weeks without feeding. Ensure you compact again
Thank you brother Paul, and i appreciate your clear elaboration and demonstrations.

For maize silage, use chopper for nappier you can use anynof the two
Hi Paul
What reason can make the silage lot later after fermentation has properly taken place in the three weeks?
