Thank you for this explanation. No one explains these details as perfectly as you do. Your videos are perfectly clear and easy to follow. I certainly appreciate you sharing your knowledge with all of us. Rachel S.
I'm a self taught knitter who's only come to knitting in later life with the advent of grandchildren. This video is absolutely brilliant. It's so detailed and has enabled me to pick up and knit the stitches for a collar, making a join that's all but invisible. Something I can be proud of. The only downside now is that I want to go back and redo all previous pieces! Thank you so much.
One of the best tutorials I've viewed. Your instructions are so clear and your camera technique makes it so easy to see and follow. Thank you for making these!
I refer back to your videos every time I'm working on a sweater. My eyes have a hard time distinguishing stitches when it's time to pick up and knit. I made my very first cardigan with a button band thanks to you.
You have a great knack for conveying instructions and the tone of your voice is reassuring throughout the video. Very easy to listen to and follow your advice. Thanks so much.
I'm so grateful I found you. I do knitting very rarely because I'm afraid I will come out with very difficult stitches. Today I went with three youtube knitters and was unable to get stitch. Watched you for a second and wow!!!! Right away my brain lighted up. Got it on first try. Thank. From now on only one person; YOU. I"LL BE KNITTING MUCH MORE. THANK YOU.....BLESSINGS.
My grandmother taught me to knit and she passed away after years ago. No one ever taught me to pick up stitches properly. Thank you so much for this video!
I am in the process of making my very first cardigan and will be watching this on repeat so that hopefully my neckline will look half as good as that!! 🥴 I love your tutorials thank you so much for taking the time to make them!!!
This is the best video I have seen for picking up stitches on a neckband. I love it. I am a self taught knitter (starting at age 41) and a perfectionist, so I really struggle with things like this (and shoulder seaming). I go to a local knitting store once a week for help with my knitting. When I ask the store owner about a different technique for something, such as shoulder seams without the stair step, or left leaning and right leaning decreases, she says "you've been watching youtube videos again haven't you?" I haven't been able to go to her store for 4 weeks because NSW went into total lockdown. I am so glad I found this video. I have been struggling with how to finish off a jumper for my grandson for nearly 4 weeks. The store owner told me how to knit up stitches, but the way she told me, I just didn't get it. I finished my first jumper in May this year and she very kindly sewed it up for me in the end because I was so frustrated I was ready to give up knitting for good, and she also knew how important that jumper was to me, because it was for my grandson. This video will also help me finish off a cardigan I knitted for my grandson almost a year ago.
I love this story Christine, thank you for sharing. I will give you a little hint. I have tons of videos that you would like on finishing and other jumper construction details. All you have to do is do a search for the technique you are looking for and add my name. Like - Mattress stitch suzanne bryan. And it will pop up for you. Happy knitting. If we lived closer, I would certainly help you.
Hi Suzanne, I am so glad that I watched your video. I finished a sweater and was read to pick up and knit the neckline in a 1x1 rib. Your video was very clear and I didn't have any trouble with picking up the right stitches. Thank you so much. Your instructions are outstanding.
Hello from România! Thankyou sooo much for helping me learn how to knit. Since i discovered your tutorials, i keep returning to them every time i start a new project. You are a brilliant teacher! Bless you!
I can't thank you enough for your clear, concise teaching videos. I don't always comment on each one, but I do give the "thumbs up". I always learn so much. I have picked up the bound off edge and wondered why those stitches ended up between the column.
K3, bind off next 6 stitches in knit. Knit across leaves me with 3 sts each side unworked for second side; turn, then rows 2 to 8 knit 3. I'm having a problem when I get to turn. Can anyone out there help me..thanks. I will appreciate your help
Thank you Very much... your tuts are most helpful and easy to remember because you take the time to explain each step as well as guiding on the Do's and Dont's... This is a 5 Star Quality video tutorial ☆☆☆☆☆
This is SO helpful!!! I have always been spooked by this phase of sweater-making, and have avoided making sweaters because of it.... No longer!!! I am about to wet-block sweater pieces according to your instructions in a different tutorial, and feel confident about having a good experience with picking up stitches around the neckline - thanks much!!!
As always, Suzanne, you are a lifesaver! I hate the frustration that comes without knowing why stuff happens wrong and how to make it right...this way I get it right the first time!!! THANKS!

Dear Suzanne Bryan, this is brilliant and I am finally over the fear of picking up stitches at the neck. another sweater in my stash will be finally finished by this year. I won't follow instructions anymore in knitting manuals ;-). thanks a lot for sharing your wisdom. cheers from switzerland.
Hi Suzanne, decided at the last minute to check out this video again, just to be sure, as I started the neckband on a sweater. Glad I did! Thanks for making the best technique videos ever!!
I want to get into knitting to knit my boyfriend a sweater and socks for Christmas, I've never been so excited to learn about something! Im only 18 but i love crafts, self made clothes, etc. You've made it so easy and wonderful to learn. Btw i take several pages of notes on your instructions and techniques!😊

@@SuzanneBryan the sweet gal at our local knitting shop is going to check the stitches I picked up on the neckband! Shout out to Amanda at @gatecityyarns 🥰🥰. I hope mine looks perfect like yours Suzanne!
Again another perfect video. I have just blocked my pieces before I start the neck and this video is great and I am going to follow it step by step to get a perfect neck. You are a genius and so clear everything makes sense. Thank god I found you. 👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you. I myself haven' t been knitting very long. My husbands grandmother made gorgeous Icelandic sweaters. His mom gave me one that was started by his grandma but never finished before she passed. Really wanted to finish it for her the MIL for Christmas. The only thing left is the neck. Your video has made me feel confident that I can do this!
What a lovely idea to finish grandmother's sweater for your MIL, I'm sure she'll be thrilled!! If you're interested, I have a Facebook page (same name), filled with warm and supportive knitters of every level and we just love helping new knitters.
I a about to embark on a new pickup and knit project and I am looking all over to see which instructor does it the way I need to get it done and I love your instructions, thanks a lot I am feeling confident right now.

As always CONGRATS. Fantastic video. So well explained and in detail. Zooming was perfect. I spend my time watching and appreciating your videos and admiring your CALM VOICE, such a pleasure to listen to. Let me be honest, I picked up stitches all wrong throughout my "knittinghood". Now I realize why the band was ugly and bulky. It makes me giggle now. It's time to repair my mistakes and start with a swatch using 2 colors of yarn as shown in your video. Wish I didn't live so far from you 🗼🚀 Suzanne I LOVE every video of yours. They are short easy to understand and made for all ages. You truly are gifted, exceptional and a blessing to me. Yes, proper finishing makes all the difference. No matter how wonderful your knitting is, the final little details can doom your project if not worked properly. Happy knitting.

Beautiful demonstration once again Suzanne. I'm about to add ribbing to a top down sweater that didn't have a ribbed neckline but I think needs one. Thanks for your video.
I am a self taught knitter. No one I know knits. I have been knitting since a young girl, but I have not knit a sweater! Kind of scared. I have a sweaters quantity waiting. I am watching your tutorials learning a lot, thank you.
Me too, I am also a self taught knitter, plus going through the TKGA (The Knitting Guild Association) Master Hand Knitting Program. You will get there. Knitting sweaters that fit is the ultimate gift to yourself. Happy knitting.

Great video just what I was looking for. Loved that your explanations explained why you were doing what you were doing with the right amount of information not too little or too much for a beginner like me.
I'm so happy to hear that my video was helpful, Kaila! Please check out my Facebook page (same name), it's filled with knitters of every level and we love to help new knitters! ❤️
I agree. It does save time and angst if you just take a little time and figure out the ratios first. You will be do less ripping out and your knitting will look better for it. Happy knitting.
Thank you for such great detail and explanation. I am designing a lace tank for my niece's flower girls and am learning as I go along! Hoping I didn't place some of my YOs too close to the edge. (I suspect I have - but it's lace, so hopefully all will turn out well!)
I don't know how I picked up stitches before 🙈 sticking my needle under the bar between stitches and knit a stitch, for sure very difficult 🙈 Thank you for showing the right way! 👌💐
tutorial starts at @3:45 if you just need to see how she picks up stitches for the neckline and are pretty solid on understanding gauge, etc. @4:48 she explains the difference between *pick up* and *pick up and knit*
Hi Suzanne and Family. MIDNIGHT IN FRANCE. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2019. LOVE, ADORE, ADMIRE YOU and VALUE your videos. You are truly amazing and blest to TEACH. Ladders and steps have been my nightmare, never had a pretty finish to shoulders and necklines. bulky big onions. who cared, no one could see!!! Now I realize my horrible mistake. I have to remember that the needle has to go IN THE MIDDLE of the stitch and under the cast off stitch. I'm so grateful to you for all these videos, wonderful for a dummy like me. I can never take my eyes of your videos, NOT ALWAYS. My young kitty decided, just at that crucial moment when I'm in the deepest concentration, to walk on the keybaord!! well, i'm taken to another video with no interest. So I have to re-start your video. Thanks for sharing and caring. Hugs from your addicted fan.
On a top down sweater neck edge the stitches are upside down as opposed to working bottom up...so the v's of the stitch are actually the in between stitch... so how do you pick up the stitches? If I go in the actual knitted stitch from top down orientation it won't match the v (knitted stitch) from working the neck band right (bottom) side up. I don't normally knit top down but seems in this case I have to pick up the bound off neck edge to have the neck band knit stitches flow with the now bottom up view of the sweater. I hope this makes sense. i want to do this right but top down seems to change the game. Thank you for any thoughts/solutions you might have regarding this.
You are correct, you will be picking up between the stitches, in the new Vs formed by the right leg of the stitch to the left and the left leg of the stitch to the right.
@@SuzanneBryan Thank you. i understand that i will be picking up between the original neck down stitches which makes it picking up and knitting under the CO stitch (my thought being that the CO stitches of a neck down sweater look similar to BO stitches.... so i don't want holes so i will adjust to picking up the next row down on a loose CO stitch. I believe this is as you said. Thank you again.
Thank you! I’m working on a V neck vest for my husband. I am ready to put on the neck ribbing and arm hole ribbing. I’m so glad I watched this first. The pattern did not mention blocking before picking up the stitches. Thank you too for teaching me how to avoid holes. Do you recommend wet blocking or steam blocking. I wish I had blocked the pieces before joining the shoulder and side seams. I think this would have made joining so much easier. Hopefully I can make a nice ribbing for the V neck and arm holes.
... also would like to know if the knitting works should or should not be ironed.. at times with ironing, I find it easier at the joining stages or to straighten out folded picot edgings or to straighten out botton-hole strips etc.. but am left wondering if that makes the works too flat or even disfiguered
Very helpful; Thankyou. I have just completed a wool, long-sleeved sweater. However, I want the sleeves to be 1.5” longer than they are. Two questions: 1. Can the sleeves be lengthened by blocking? 2. Would another option be to pickup and knit additional ribbing at the cuffs?
Great questions. blocking will make them longer temporarily, they will shrink back up in a few weeks. Picking up and knitting down is your best option.
I am so pleased that I came across this video! This is probably my third jumper and I have suffered from the holes, so that was a real face palm moment right there! Thanks for explaining how that error occurs so clearly. Do you have a video on how to work out the ratio of stitches that I need to pick up and knit? I have counted that I have 62 stitches available to pick up but need to fit in 75 according to my pattern. Hmm?!
Yes, I have that video too - Perfect Picked Up Buttonband - explains the ratio process - th-cam.com/video/AfU-6QHNlDw/w-d-xo.html Thank you, Happy New Year and Happy Knitting!
Because this was a one to one ration demo I was left wondering the same thing and if I missed something in the video. Thank you for the question posed and the answer/link Suzanne.
Some people can teach and some can't - you are a GREAT teacher! Perfect explanation- thank you sooooo much!

I'm so happy to hear that my video was helpful, Kaila! Please check out my Facebook page (same name), it's filled with knitters of every level and we love to help new knitters! ❤️
Thank u s much. I was about to pick up and knit without blocking, so I will do just that before proceeding.
Great, it makes a huge difference. Happy knitting.
Thank you for this helpful video it was filmed perfectly and is easy to follow.
Great to hear!
Thank you so much for this clear and great video! Amazing 🙂 Greetings form Germany!
Great instructions. It is always a little worrisome to pick up stitches for collars and/or button bands hoping they fit well. Thank you for the video.
I agree. It does save time and angst if you just take a little time and figure out the ratios first. You will be do less ripping out and your knitting will look better for it. Happy knitting.
Thanks for your clear instruction. Really appreciated!
You are welcome!
Thanks Suzanne, this is really helpful!! 😊
You're so welcome, Joy, glad it was helpful! 😊
Thank you for such great detail and explanation. I am designing a lace tank for my niece's flower girls and am learning as I go along! Hoping I didn't place some of my YOs too close to the edge. (I suspect I have - but it's lace, so hopefully all will turn out well!)
Enjoy!
I don't know how I picked up stitches before 🙈 sticking my needle under the bar between stitches and knit a stitch, for sure very difficult 🙈 Thank you for showing the right way! 👌💐
You are so welcome, Anne-Marie! I appreciate your thoughtful feedback! ❤️
tutorial starts at @3:45 if you just need to see how she picks up stitches for the neckline and are pretty solid on understanding gauge, etc.
@4:48 she explains the difference between *pick up* and *pick up and knit*
Thank you for making the time stamps.
I have been want to try a sweater but have stayed away as I did not know how to pick up stitches , thanks so much!
You are very welcome. Let us know how your sweater turns out. Happy kntiting.

Thank you so much! Happy New Year and Happy Knitting!
This was incredibly helpful - thank you!!
Glad it was helpful, Cindy, and you are very welcome! 😊
Absolutely brilliant thank you for your teaching. Very well explained.
Glad you enjoyed it, Sara! I appreciate your very kind feedback!
Thank you I have been doing it wrong and it just did not look right. You made it so very clear to me and again thank you.
That's wonderful, J, so happy to help!
Sounds like you have it.
Beautiful! Kind of confused about the planning, but seems like if you avoid those holes, like you did, it would look great like yours did.
Yes, exactly
Just what I needed for my project! Thank you…
You are very welcome! Happy knitting.
Thank you.very.much. well.explained..I really.learned how to pick up.stitches from you only. Again thanks a lot.
You are so welcome, Uma! I really appreciate your very kind feedback! 😊
Yes, blocking first does make a big difference. I am so glad this video was helpful for you.
Your instruction is very clear and makes sense. It helps a lot. Thank you very much. I'll join your FB group.
Wonderful! Hugs and Happy Knitting.
That was so helpful.. Thanks.. Your work is so perfect!
... also would like to know if the knitting works should or should not be ironed.. at times with ironing, I find it easier at the joining stages or to straighten out folded picot edgings or to straighten out botton-hole strips etc.. but am left wondering if that makes the works too flat or even disfiguered
Subbed and liked. Thank you so much, great tutorial. Very clearly explained too. You have been a great help xx
Happy Knitting!
Fantastic!!! Love your work ❤️❤️❤️❤️💜💜💜💜
Thank you! Hugs and Happy Knitting.
Wonderfully done, as always!
Thank you Patsy Starks! Happy knitting.
Very helpful; Thankyou.
I have just completed a wool, long-sleeved sweater. However, I want the sleeves to be 1.5” longer than they are. Two questions:
1. Can the sleeves be lengthened by blocking?
2. Would another option be to pickup and knit additional ribbing at the cuffs?
Great questions. blocking will make them longer temporarily, they will shrink back up in a few weeks. Picking up and knitting down is your best option.
Really good and straight forward
Thank you, Ira, I appreciate that! 😊
Thank you for this!!! Your tutorial is sooo helpful!!!
Glad it was helpful, Heidi, and thank you!
Hmm?!
Yes, I have that video too - Perfect Picked Up Buttonband - explains the ratio process - th-cam.com/video/AfU-6QHNlDw/w-d-xo.html
Thank you, Happy New Year and Happy Knitting!
Because this was a one to one ration demo I was left wondering the same thing and if I missed something in the video. Thank you for the question posed and the answer/link Suzanne.
