Thank you Thank You!! I have tried in the past to find out what part of the side to pick up, and couldn’t find an answer till now! I will sleep tonight lol
Wonderful. I appreciate your discussion of the anatomy of the stitches, the multiple methods for picking up stitches, and what the results look like BEFORE showing us how to correctly use each method. I very much appreciate your teaching style, Ms. Bryan! Thank you.
Thanks for this, what a great video! Short, clear, and to the point, with excellent explanations of the pros and cons of each method, and clear photos, front and back. What a welcome relief from the youtube videos that have more meaningless chat than actual teaching. You are a gem!
Love the way you demonstrate and also how you cover it verbally. You info in stated very clearly and you actually repeat it. Slowly and clearly. Thank you so much. It is to difficult when one goes too fast/does not repeat it. We beginners need your concise instructions.
I just watched a video that told me to go in under making a very thick seam. I decided 'no way!' and then found your tutorial. Not only did you show three and let us compare, you also explained where and why so we can choose. I love the quick, clear and to-the-point explanations. Thank you so much. Subscribed and up-thumbed.
Hi Suzanne, this has answered my question whether to slip the 1st stitch depending on the garment to be knitted. Once again, great to watch your videos, a real treat and always learning something new from the Queen of Knitting
This was exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for showing both sides of the fabric. That was really insightful. Just one small suggestion for these types of tutorials it really helps to have a contrasting yarn. I really liked seeing them in the same colorway so I could see how the finished pieces would look, but the contrasting yarn would be a great addition!
You are very welcome, Karly! Thank you for the feedback; I agree that it is helpful to have a contrast color, and do in many of my videos, I will definitely keep in mind for future vids to show both ways. 😊
I just found your tutorials. I havent watched very many YET. But, thank you. I just counted my knitted rows accurately and I feel like I can be confident in my count for the first time. I always make a mark on paper for each row. But, even with that I'm not always sure if I remembered to mark them all. Anyway, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. When you said the "frown part" was the actual stitch, it was a game changer for me. 🎉
Yay!! I was just about to cast on for a new shawl and it called for a garter tab. Your timing with this video is amazing. This time it'll look cleaner than my last garter tab cast on. Thank you Suzanne! :D
Thank you so much! It’s great this video. Could you please show how to pick up stitches for underarms in a top down sweater in garter stich fabric? Thank you.
Thank you for this video. I've been trying to figure put how to add a border to the garter stitch but couldn't figure out where to even start. Thank you!!!!
Suzanne, this is such a timely tutorial for me. I’m currently working on a baby blanket with open work stars. It has a stockinette ground, with a 5 stitch garter border all the way around. It has a mitered lace border, and the pattern instructs to sew it on. No way! I’m going to knit it on as I work it. I’ve knitted this blanket once, over 20 years ago. Thanks to you, I’m confident that this one will be much neater. Thank you! ❤️
I’m making a garter stitch blanket that involves a lot of picking up stitches (Windy Day by purlsoho). I’ve tried every way of doing this that TH-cam has to offer. Yours is definitely working the best for me. Thank you!! You explained this so well. Mine still doesn’t look as nice as yours, but I’m hoping I’ll improve as time goes on
What timing! I just ripped out where I was picking up an armhole with garter stitch. I was doing the one stitch in method and it looked awful. I didn't think I should use the purl bump, but now you have validated it. Love your informative videos!
Suzanne you are the most competent teacher. I would like to join the Knit along you announced starting 10/4. I can’t get into Ralvery I am 86 years and have completed one sweater and two to trash. If you see this please let me know how I can purchase the Pattern for the cardigan and your tutorials will get me through. Thank you. I have been knitting 16 years. Thank you.
Thank you! Your explanations ara wonderful! I'm enjoying them so much ❤️ Watching your videos I learned how to improve my work, and that there are more elegant ways to do certain elements. The way you teach is so clear and on point! Could you possibly do a beginners(well not complete beginner, I've done a lot of scarfs and hats, but nothing that complex) video on socks? Maybe mittens? I love videos that you did, but they are bit out of my reach for now ☺️☺️☺️
I really find your videos so useful (and the "reverse yarn wrap" on the second stitch has been a revelation!). Can you tell me the best way to pick up along a vertical garter stitch edge with a slipped stitch chain if the pattern does not require me to use every stitch?
What you can do with that slipped stitch edge, if you need to pick up two stitches for the one slipped stitch, use each leg of the slipped stitch separately. It is not as tidy looking as a non slipped stitch edge, but it will do. In the future, if you are going to be seaming or picking up stitches along an edge, it will look nicer in the long run if the edge stitches are worked rather than slipped. Happy New Year.
I need to pick up stitches for a button band on a cardigan. The top section is in garter stitch; the middle section is in stockinette stitch; and the bottom section is in garter stitch. Should I pick up the stitches "one stitch in" on the garter as well as the stockinette, so that I have a straight vertical line?
Tvm for this. When I slip the first stitch in my garter square, I am not getting the v edge. What am I doing wrong? If you could direct me probs to one of your earlier vids that would be great. I'm making dish cloths.
This is a very good question. I showed that method, because many people do that. I want you to see the effect. Maybe they will choose one of the other methods now. Pros and cons of each method.
@@SuzanneBryan Ah, gotcha. The other methods you demo'ed will help me finish an oooold (perhaps 2+ yrs?!) UFO that calls for an outer border along garter-stitched edges. I was stumped and never remembered to take it to town for help at my yarn shop. Then I started hiding it under other projects lol! Thank you again.
I would think you could use it if you don’t show the backside of the fabric. If it’s a garment where you only see the public side that might be an option.
I found the comparison of 3 ways very helpful BUT the most useful was the actual picking up and I would have liked not to have to wait 5 minutes to see that. As well I noticed that the closeup got fuzzy which made it a little harder to see where the needle was being placed.
Thank you Thank You!! I have tried in the past to find out what part of the side to pick up, and couldn’t find an answer till now! I will sleep tonight lol

This really helped me; Thank you!

You are so right about the "frown part" of the stitch. I'm so glad it clicked for you.
Recently found your channel and I love it! Such good advice, shown slowly and repeatedly. I will definitely be following you for more x

Great idea, thank you. Adding to my todo list.
Wonderful 😊❤️😊❤️😊
Your videos are really wonderful! Would you do one on knitting a V-neck? I've been struggling mighty on that for weeks now
That is on my todo list. Thank you.
Such a wonderful video, thank you Suzanne! I was wondering, do you have any advice on how to pick up from Judy’s Magic Cast on? Thank you!
Can give me more information on what you are trying to pick up? Happy Holidays.

The next video that I am making is on how to slip the edge stitches. There are a variety of ways. Stay tuned. Be sure to subscribe.
@@SuzanneBryan ty. Yes, I am a subscriber.
Suzanne, since the picking up a whole stitch (in the middle) looks so messy, why might one use that technique? Thanx
This is a very good question. I showed that method, because many people do that. I want you to see the effect. Maybe they will choose one of the other methods now. Pros and cons of each method.
