Excellent attention to detail. My Corolla has 140k. Should timing chain be replaced and how important is the valve adjustments Toyota says it needs at 60k miles? Thank you.
Yes, you can. I'm currently doing this without taking it out. You have to remove the passenger front wheel to get to the lower part, but it's totally doable.

I think the timing chain is installed wrong and the timing is wrong. But no worries, machine off and chain installation again. Practice and Repeat 1000 times makes perfect, as my Basketball star Michael Jordan would tell me...

thanks, so if I set this on my 1ZZ like this then I can go ahead and take out and replace the cams? also what was that cog you put on the lower part of the engine, does that lock it all in position and stop it from moving?

Thank you man!,, I enrolled one of the basic automotive servicing subject,,I seen that marking and I'm looking the answers and clear information link to firing order and timing chain relationship; Now I seen your video, its clear, More power to you Man!!!
My dear friend, you have help me save my rear end! The markings and their locations will help as I need to replace my VVT-i cam timing actuator for I locked it by turning the engine CCW which locked theVVT-i cam gear. You are now on my list of subscribed!! Thank you..
@xchevyimpala69x How did this go for you? I replaced the head gasket on my prius about a year ago only to find that the head had warped from the heat. In the end I swapped in a good used engine.
Dumb question i always wanted to ask.... ok, the timing chain, if each link in the chain is created equal, then why does it matter where the yellow marked links go? It seems, from a naive point of view, that all that really matters is if the gears dots are aligned.... In other words, what would be the consequence if you installed the chain with the yellow marks being out of sync? (always been afraid to ask this).
In my opinion it does not matter. Being that there are three, it must be to see if it has skipped. Real service manuals seem to be scarce, I wish my cheapy book would show up. Everything on mine is according to this video except the yellow marks which looks like this engine has been serviced before and the mechanic did not set the yellow marks correctly. The engine runs great, but the head gasket must be blown. BTW, if the new chain has yellow links I will put them in the correct position.
On second thought, the yellow marks are to insure the chain is taught on the opposite side of the tensioner. In other words lining up all the yellow links to the dots on both cams and crank guaranties the correct number of links on the right hand side, without the colors one would make sure the chain is tight on that side. Still, one should crank it around a couple of times to make sure the timing marks line up with or without colored links provided.
So from what I know these are the features of the chain, thanks to which you can calculate its wear, as well as the position of the gears in relation to the chain, i.e. the timing gear fight in relation to the crank-piston system 🤔... ?
This was exactly what I needed. Thank you! Extremely helpful!
Glad it was helpful!

How as a consumers can I tell without ripping car apart to see, is if the mechanic actually made sure timing chain is in sincq?
The engine must be disassembled and the length of the chain must be measured at a Toyota dealer.
