RDR1 is still very much it's own thing. RDR2 John feels nothing like himself. And no it's not just because he's younger or because his family is taken away. It's the entire personality itself, especially in rdr2 epilogue he is some dumbed down laughing stock. Can you imagine RDR1 John being bossed around by Sadie? No, the just made him a shadow of Arthur in RDR2. And also what doesn't make sense is that Javier is absolutely different in RDR2, so it doesn't even work for you when you see him in RDR1 and John tells him that Abigail always thought he was a creep, which is not RDR2 Javier at all. It's a very much separate game with it's own very different identity.

US Marshall Leigh Johnson. watched over Armadillo since the towns original Sheriff quit and left when the town was massacred by the Del Lobo Gang in 1907 and no one desired to be Sheriff. so its why the Marshall took over the job of protecting the town
When Rockstar first made this game, Arthur and the whole Van der Linde gang weren’t even a part of the picture. The real brilliance here is in how the writers later managed to connect everything so seamlessly to RDR1 without disrupting the original story. Honestly, that’s even more impressive than if they’d planned a Red Dead Redemption 2 prequel from the start!
I think they had the initial concept: Marston leaves the gang because of a botched robbery. Even though his relationship was strained, he still had SOME respect for Bill and Javier, and he still respect Dutch in spite of what he did.
being a good writer doesn't always mean having a detailed plan for all your stories (nor is it always a luxury every writer has). sometimes, being a good writer can be exhibited by taking what has already been written in the short term and making it more meaningful with what you continue to write.

I mean, he was the last person to line up with Dutch and Micah - if that's not choosing survival over pride, I don't know what is. Arthur and John were outnumbered - Susan was already dead, and Javier had already picked his side. Bill chose what he thought would be his best chance at survival.

I really wish you actually killed Bill during this mission, feels like such a waste for him to escape but then do literally nothing until you kill him later anyway. Javiar should have been allowed to be an active antagonist even without the context of 2.
He carried John to safety, away from the wolves. That why when John chose to kill him and threw his corpse into a cell, he briefly mourned him but proceed to spit on him due to how annoying it was to capture him.
Javier as a character makes little to no sense when going from RDR2 to RDR1. In RDR1 he's spoken about as a terrible guy but when we see him in RDR2 he's nothing but nice to everyone. John even says in RDR1 "Abigail would've killed you already. She always thought you were a creep" which makes no sense considering Micah was the creep, not Javier.
It's really amazing how this scene plays like as if RDR 2 was released and we already know what happened. That is great writing there, Dan Houser is one talented writer.

It's because it took close to 2,000 people working over 8 years and spending more than 200 million Dollars on the game. And here you are, you entitled, ignorant crybaby, "disappointed".
Almost all of Bill’s dialogue in RDR1 is him talking about the past. He keeps saying “You always were…” and things like that every time you see him. The way they expanded on that in the prequel is by having him more or less worship Dutch, saying he felt lost and useless without him, like he can accomplish anything when beside him. The gang meant everything to Bill, even 12 years later he can’t help but compare things to the way they were back then.
That's true, although he still has some resentment towards Dutch in RDR1 since he says "Now I'M in charge. No more Dutch and no more you", whereas Javier is STILL loyal to Dutch in RDR1 when he lies to John about where Dutch is. He says "And Dutch, Dutch is in Colombia, I can take you straight to him" when we later find out that Dutch is actually up in Blackwater.
Actually his instinct for survival caused him to run and flee to Mexico, so that's what won out. Even in the mission where he's caught he's trying to flee with the corrupt Mexican Colonel

Man the dialogue in both games is just superb, there’s no dull conversation or just meaningless talk, it all flows well and makes sense
I also like the part when John finally gets Dutch and you hear Dutch say he “has a plan this time” and John’s response is “you always did have a plan”
Always loved this mission seeing all the side characters come together was so badass
