Was thinking this also
Bad idea.
That "weird shadow" on the hardware is a historic Japanned Tiger-Stripe finish which was very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The base metal is plated in copper and then the blacking is done over that. I've been involved in quite a few restoration projects that had to replicate that finish.
That said, nickel finish was historically popular in bathrooms, kitchens and medical facilities because it was more easily cleaned and could handle humidity better - so it makes sense in a vet clinic.
How would you replicate that? I've seen a few videos, but they usually fake it with paint. My understanding is that the shadow stripe is actually carbon.
My first house ca. 1916 was full of that japanned hardware. I don't particularly care for it but kept it because it was in decent shape and historically accurate.
@@Leigh859-o1x I have not done the actual process myself, but here is a description: Plate the base metal with copper then apply clear lacquer to the bare copper where you want the bright streaks. Oxidize the piece using 1 part Liver of Sulpher to 8 parts water heated to 105 degrees. Hand polish to remove only the lacquer. Finally clear coat the piece. Different manufacturers tweaked this basic process to adjust how sharp the transition between the colors was. It will probably take a few experiments to get the look you want.
@@charlesball4639 Historically there is actually a lot of variety in how this finish looked. The copper could range from medium to dark, the luster ranged from shinny to flat, and the dark bits might have sharp edges or a smoky transition. Personally, I prefer the copper to look like it has some age on it and for the dark bits to have a natural looking, wavy smoky transition that does not look geometrical. The important thing is to match the original so that it looks the way it was intended and is consistent with the surviving original pieces.
My 1914 foursquare is full of that hardware, too!
That cupboard looks outstanding! Bravo! I agree about the color.
Japanned finish is a highly desirable finish that was very highly sought during the late victorian era well through the 1920's. This is one case, were you did the equivalent of "paint an antique". I understand your reasons, but the hinge finish you covered was original to those cabinets.
As a bit of a hardware nerd I have to say that multicolored finish was very popular around the later 1800s until the earlier 1900s. It's very commonly incorrectly called a "Japanned" finish. 100% of hardware catalogs from the manufacturers at the time called it either an "antique" or "old" finish. "Antique copper" was by far the most popular choice, but antique brass, antique bronze and antique silver were all commonly offered as well. In most cases the entire piece was chemically blackened, then areas of the hinge, doorknob, backplate, etc. were polished to create a contrast between the colors. It's so nice to see someone removing paint from hinges and giving them a bit of a restoration rather than slathering another layer on and calling it a day haha
That is REALLY SOMETHING with the "Nickel Plating"!!!! The Doors are GORGEOUS and look so nice with the Hardware!!!! My parents grew up with Doorknobs like those, and I really LOVE them too!!!! GREAT JOB Kaleb!!!!
I love this channel because it never disappoints. Great for novices where they can learn so much from you to old pro farts like me that enjoy watching you work at what we used to do. Keep up the great work!
Congratulations on the all new plumbing...That's a really big deal. You are a stickler for details and as they say, it's all in the details.
Being a gardener,,,, I see that yard as a fresh opportunity! Fun fun! And if I lived back there still I would do that for you guys !!!! Omg! The ideas floating in my brain right now....... but how nice to have new plumbing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was so cool! Your own nickel plating set-up! The doors look beautiful, the closet looks wonderful and what a grand thing to have all the sewer lines repaired, replaced and working! A great week, I would say. I’m excited to see your dad’s Lustron house. They are very innovative and really interesting.🌸
Awesome project for your dad to restore the Lustron home.
Please keep us updated with Hank's progress.
I love that Nickel project in this video!
I'm imagine you are so relieved after the sewer work is finally completed. One more thing down. The nickel plating was fascinating. I learned something today. I must say your video editing on the time lapses. was great. Best to both of you.
the hinges are japanned that was a style for a long time with the copper and black
Revolving sewage issues has got to feel good . . . Knowing now you can cross that off your "worry list", and move on to installing washing machine and other appliances. Sewer issues can be soOOo defeating, especially when trying to stick to a timeliness for bathroom/kitchen institutions. Strong work Kaleb!
What you call "brass" is actually the original finish for that particular set of hinges. They call it "flashed copper" or Japanned finish, which is sort of an orangey copper with blackish streaks or patches (exactly like what you had at the beginning of the video). This was a popular finish in late 1800s, and early 1900s. If you do a google search you will see hundreds of similar examples. The copper/black hardware tended to match really well with the brownish-orange finishes used on fir and oak doors with shellac, or with grain-painted poplar/pine. To my knowledge, nickel was really only popular for bathroom hardware and kitchen hardware.
Yea!!! Full new plumbing!!!! And the doors are looking awesome.
The doors are Ace 🤗⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.Brilliant that you got the out side plumbing sorted🤗
Love Sue❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
We have 3 Lustron homes here in Saint Charles, MO in our extended historic overlay, and one was previously rented out for small parties and gatherings. They are so sensible, and they never rot!
And it is fridge-magnet friendly, LOL!!!
Love everything about your videos! Its weird, with the time lapse and chill music its so relaxing watching you work so hard! You and Kim saved the place!Good on you guys!
Considering that it's basically you and your lovely spouse doing all this, your progress has been amazing. And the level of detail of your concerns is also impressive.
Seeing the nickel process is one of the coolest things I've seen
Caleb, I've been in the water and sewer business for 35 years. As difficult as that was, as you said, you will never have to think about it again in your lifetime. Happy that's behind you. Also if you have a bench grinder/wire brush, you can substitute one for a polishing wheel and buy a stick of polish that you rub on the buffing wheel for a few seconds while it's running and bring those hinges a serious shine.
Lustron house, I know that term. There was one for sale in Indianapolis a year or two ago. Your Dad will have a lot of fun doing the mid-century thing with that. 1955 was the year my parents were married. About the only 1950s things I'm into are the clothes (early part of the decade), Revlon dolls and the "lady head" vases.
I was born in 1955. Also my daughter loves the lady head vases too.
@@kmarch6630
Same on both counts! I had a Toni doll rather than a Revlon... Still have her, actually, and the beautiful satin, seed pearled wedding gown my mother hand sewed for her. I was a really dramatic child and must have seen or heard a story about a girl dying in her wedding day, so when I was 4, I buried her in that beautiful dress under a tree in the yard. 63 years later I can remember how mad/sad my mother was. She hand washed the dress and doll and fixed her hair and I lost the use of her for a week or two.
Oh, @Brenda Mattox I grew up in Indiana and my parents and family were from Indianapolis. And my bestie as a child was named Brenda Fair!
I work for a plating company in Los Angeles, so my kids did plating experiments just like your set up for their science projects. Really cool!
The doors look fabulous! Loving the combination of stain and the cream paint. Your Dad's house project sounds awesome, I definitely want to see that!
Those doors are absolutely gorgeous. Good job. Looking forward to seeing your dad’s project
So glad for you that the waste line debacle was resolved much quicker than you expected. That was neat to see you do the nickel plating. You are fearless! I agree that the warm creamy yellow looks great with the reddish natural wood finish. Once those walls are done, it's going to be like night and day in that room. That floor speaks for itself!! Looking good! :)
That nickel plating was way cool. Nice job.
I love how the dots turned out, too. It looks sharp.
I started watching your videos only a couple of weeks ago but that's OK because I am mending from something and am very absorbed! Your Dad's B&B sounds amazing as well. Thank-you for bringing such wonderful light into peoples' lives!
That looks so awesome on the nickel platting. The doors are so beautiful. I love seeing the wood grain. Thank you for sharing and God Bless.
Congratulations on sewer project. It must feel so good n relieved to have that finished. I suggest in the Spring throw some grass seeds out back n hopefully it will take n once again a great lawn. Loving the cabinet doors. They do look so good with the back ground color. So fascinating about doing your own nickel plating. That was cool. Learned something new today.
♥️😊👍👍👍🌟
So happy your plumbing is completed! Love the wood graining and the red! Beautiful job
The task with the sewage system and water supply was certainly not the simplest or the cheapest, but it is the basis. This will allow you to have peace of mind for several decades. The doors of storage closet came out brilliantly!
That nickel plating was awesome! Very cool. Thanks for sharing!
Congrats on sewer. One complete system (plumbing) down. The mud may hide it, but a full plumbing update is huge! Hopefully Kaleb and Kim, Jr. or the III will be the next to have to think about it.
Hey just FYI the copper & black hinge finish was called “Japanned” so it was the original finish. I know this because or research for a house restoration here in Canton Ohio.
Looks beautiful. Tell your father congratulations!!
The plating was so interesting! And those doors! Beautiful!
Your back yard is right where it should be. It is a blank canvas. Planning plumbing and walls and electrical and paint and wood finishes is easy - what your yard will look like in five years time after the plants grow is hard.
Thanks again for sharing your incredible project
Kaleb, your work is top notch. Watching the time lapse videos are relaxing and I get to see the whole process.
I'm really amazed to your attention to details, like the doors and brackets....they look wonderful. Such a relief to have the plumbing repair, upgraded and running. This must have taken a huge weight off your shoulders now this job is finished....which is huge. Well done Caleb 👏 ✔ 👍
Congratulations on having a working sewer line. It must be a great relief to have that behind you. The cabinet doors turned out beautiful!
The two toned example on the left of the hinges is exactly how ALL the hardware in my 1919 home was made. It was not shiny and nickel colored but that copper and darker toning. Blended with the wood trim and dark metal door knobs.
Definitely not a brass color that was "out" in the early 1900s but an intentional and VERY IN, color choice for hardware.
WOW 😯 how beautiful your home is coming along. I know when you're done it's going to be exquisite, because you put so much love into it 🥰💯
Those doors are so very handsome. I am sure Mr. Brown would love them. Kaleb you are certainly so very talented!
We are the same. I am preparing my first nickel plating for the same reason you said; to learn a new valuable skill.
You are truly an artist! I would never even think of plating the hardware!
i audibly gasped when the doors were mounted! the yellow and the red of the wood goooo so welllllllll
That is really beautiful, the hardware makes the beauty of it all come together..
So cool to see the Branson Ultrasonic cleaner. My grandpa helped invent the technology that makes that machine possible!
The nickel plating was fun to watch. Looking good Kaleb :)
Love your Dad's project
It’s coming together nicely!! ❤ love all the hard work that is going into the house. Thanks for your wonderful videos on project updates. It’s nice you can document the work you do so future generations can look back ❤
I love the back yard it’s a blank canvas and you can put down the grass and plants that will work ;)
A Lustron? That’s really exciting!!!! 😃
nice update, the garden will come round in time 2x👍
Hey Kaleb, I love the nickel platting process, the doors, look beautiful, nice job. I know the how depressing the sewer lateral, was to have done. As you said, it's over now and hopefully you are done with it. Your dad's place sounds so cool, I can't wait to see it. well done this week. Love from N.Y.
Hi Kaleb. The doors looks awesome. I’ve also been rooting on Mike in Australia. He is also doing an awesome job. You both are so talented!
Lol, just don't tell Mike that! Here in Australia that terminology means something entirely different 🙃
Oh my, didn’t know!🙄
Hi Kaleb, Those doors look superb and it's exactly the right call to paint the inside yellow to match the shelves. That will be perfect. Well done.
I had no idea electro plating was such a simple process once you have the equipment. Years ago I had a fabulous condiment set which was in good condition except for the plating. In the end I gave it away because at the time I was far more fussy about finish than I am now. That was a bad move I now realise. All the best from Manchester UK good Buddy.
Thanks for sharing! On the hinges I do believe you uncovered the original "flashed copper" or "japanned copper" finish. It is meant to have a tiger stripe appearance and was extremely popular on metal hardware of the early teens.
Yes, I had “Jappaned” hardware in my turn of the century home. I loved it.
@@az_twist6267 it really is gorgeous stuff!
Oh, that's interesting to know. My house was built in 1901 and all of the door hinges have that finish.
Hi Kaleb your doing a fantastic job looks magnificent.👍
Love the nickel plating, my 1907 Columbia BI Sterling gramophone has a nickel plated morning glory horn and tone arm. Watching your process on restoring the hinges was very interesting. On your dad's project, I have an early 1960's GE "portable" TV that still works and I use an RF converter to allow me to hook up a DVD player to it. I use it to watch old episodes of Dark Shadows or have the unremastered special effects on Star Trek look state of the art (for the time) again seeing them at the screen resolution they were intended for.
The house is progressing nicely ! Hope to see it in.person someday I love old Victorian houses great job keep it up
Those doors you did are beautiful. You are so meticulous and it shows in your work.
Really loved watching the nickel-plating. I took a metalsmithing class at a community college about 35 years ago. While none of the projects I wanted to make required plating, it is something we learned about and I was amazed by the process. Really cool to see it again -- thanks!
The doors look great! I love the contrast with the yellow. Who knew you could do your own nickel plating? you are amazing at the skills you have learned. God bless you! glad the sewer system is done.
Those doors are beautiful. Y'all have a great week.
Congratulations on the New Plumbing! 🎉 Adulting perks we never thought we would celebrate! Just going through this myself but not on that scale... yard is a mud swamp and inside is about to get tore up. Oh joys of being an adult...
I work in lighting fabrication, where I get a lot of things plated. The best way is to get your brass as polished as you want the nickel to look. The plating is rather thin, so it’s super easy to burn through that plating if you try and adjust the finish after.
Beautiful job!
The doors are beautiful! Great job!
you're headed for your college degree of "Jack of all trades, Master of None" Keep up the great work! the hinges turned out beautiful!
you forgot the last half of that quote "a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one"
@@The2ndEmpireStrikesBack Oh I think by now you’ve a master paint stripper,master plasterer,etc.🙌🏻
The doors are stunning!
I never knew nickel plating could be a DIY project. Those door are really going to look gooooooood!
I'm so jealous your dad found a lustron! I love love love them
Doors look great & your dad's 1950s metal house idea is great. Been thinking about Hank, hoping he is rallying big-time against whatever ails him.
Yoshi Mizumake.
cool idea to restore a Lustron house.. I know that I have seen at least 2 in the STL metro area. nice plating. I am SO glad that your plumbing fiasco is settled.
simply lovely caleb the love you have for your home is always a joy to me thanks for sharing mate as always.
That nickel plating is really cool! Those doors look very good against that paint, it brings out the richness of the wood and the warmth. Looking good! Take care!
Oh boy, mud! It must be hard to keep the dogs from slogging around in there. That nickel plating was fun to see - that's the kind of project I would like to try.
Can't wait to see your dad's project. Hope Hank is doing well 🙏.
Love the nickel plated hinges and the doors, just beautiful. Can’t wait to see your dad’s house, my grandparents lived in one of those aluminum houses, the thing was solid metal, the reflection from the sun was intense. LoL
Hi Kaleb. Greetings from Toronto, Canada. I would like to start by saying that we have followed your entire journey. We love everything you have done so far. I must say however, I don't like the combination of the stained cupboard doors against the yellowish cupboard. All the best to you and Kim. Can't wait to see your next post.
Those Doors look Amazing !
Amazing job! The work you are doing is amazing!
Bing ding retarded Godzilla.
MAN I SO LOOK FORWARD TO THESE VIDEOS
THANKS FOR BEINV AWESOME
We love you too Caleb. Those two doors turned out really super nice 🤩 with that red stain
The yard is a total clean slate. See if any Community College or Vocational School has landscaping classes open to the public. They are normally not super expensive. And that could give you some ideas on the set up. Just a thought. Thanks for the channel. Totally appreciate it and the work you are doing.
They look so nice. What a great job you did. It is such a unique idea to nickel plate the hardware. It does look very cool. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Lustron homes are definitely unique, there are several in Iowa with a couple not far from where I live... under-appreciated for sure!
The doors look fantastic
Your attention to detail is amazing. You could purchase hardware but no, you nickel plate. Looks fantastic. Glad your sewer issues are over. A load off your mind for sure. Have a great week!
Dude, you nickel-plated Japanned copper finish. These things are super expensive to replace.
wow, i did not know you could nickle plate at home! super cool! great job on the video as always. ❤❤❤
Hi Kaleb good to see what's happening, I heard that your cat Hank is doing ok, he has heart problems. 🙏 I hope he recovers well. Thanks for sharing the project your showing today. Stay Safe.🙂 I think it was your Kim that gave us the message about poor Hank.
Great job as always Kaleb! Love the doors and cabinets, they turned out beautifully!
Wow, it looks great! A lot of work but the payoff is really nice! Also, nickel plating is SO cool!!! I could watch a lot more of that!
You should look into doing some decoupage. Find papers that do farm animal adverts, pets, or just zoo animals in victorian style to cover the back side of the doors.
Looks like my backyard when I bought my house new. But grass grows fast if you
can just wait it out till spring.
I watched a mini documentary about the Lustrons. They said it was more like restoring a car than a house. Beware the Bondo!
I read that too. They also said the homes fell out of favor because the banks would not give loans out for them - they feared they would lower property values.
