Reading Anne’s diary you really feel like you got to know her and the conditions she lived through - and the fear. And you want her to survive. They came so close to surviving but then were sent to the camps. But even then they came so close if they could have just lived a couple more months. That’s what really bothers me. But then, had she lived and simply gone back and gotten her diary, it would’ve just been another Holocaust survivor story. The fact that she died so young after her diary is what made her the most famous.
That is not entirely it. It is partly the fact she died but it was also the fact she wrote so well. It was a combination of factors.
Who knows what she could have contributed to humanity today, had she lived.
Her diary is just an indication of that loss and potential
Hax Anne not died, she would have tried her hardest to publish her work. And she more than likely would have succeeded as a result of her great writing talent. She would have continued to write after publishing the Secret Annexe, at one point or another the book would have received substantial publicity. Perhaps not as great as if she had died. The thought that her she is only famous because of her death is very ill conceived and short sighted.
Oh how wonderful if she had survived.
She was so full of the joy of living. Whether she became famous or not the world would have been better with her.

Eva Schloss is still alive and well and there is plenty to know about her! She emigrated to England where she married, had children, and became an international speaker and humanitarian. She spoke in Knoxville, Tennessee this year about her experience which she wrote a book about. Her father and brother were put into hiding separately, where they painted quite an extensive collection, which was put on display in America for the first time (in Knoxville!) this past winter. They were both murdered, but she and her mother survived. In her book and in interviews, she talks about knowing Anne before going into hiding.
She just passed away recently :(

Hey. You should do a name explain on the Scotland yard. Because, what's a Scotland yard? Why is it the name for a British investigation agency?

well that was much less exciting than I thought it would be.
After just looking it up, apparently the street was called that because it's where Scottish diplomats would stay when visiting England (obviously before the Union). So it was kind of like Scotland's embassy.
And "Scotland Yard" does have some jurisdiction over Scotland. Although the Metropolitan Police are primarily London's police force, they also have some UK wide responsibilities such as counter-terrorism.

"The Met" are London's police force (Metropolitan Police). Scotland Yard is the Criminal Investigation branch, with The Sweeny (Sweeny Todd) being the nickname for the Met's "Flying Squad".

It’s so dang sad that Anne and Margot died a few months before liberation 😔 She could’ve lived a good life, and so could’ve Margot.
My dad’s family fled Germany even before hitler came to power. They were Catholics living in cologne, Germany. After they left in the late 20’s and hitler came to power, they didn’t understand at the time what he was really doing. They knew he was the german dictator, which they thought “we’re never going back to Germany..” and started a pecan farm in Michigan and later took their lives to Alabama. After the Anne Frank book was published by Otto, they ended up keeping a copy which.. where did it end up today? The book was left by my grandfather in my grandmothers house and she’s pretty connected to her old things so she kept the book and stuff from the seventies, but by what I mean by he left he went to north Alabama away from south Alabama and married another woman and they moved out of state. When I go to her house, either she likes to read it to us even though it’s hard because the pages are rusty, or me and my cousins like to be dorks and find it ourselves. The Anne frank one is one fascinating story. I really wish the child got to see more of her life then ending up in a camp. It is one heartbreaking story that didn’t end well for anyone really.. I grieve over the lost Jews and Germans who died, 🖤❤️💛
They were very smart to leave then. So many Jewish people underestimated Hitler and assumed moving to the Netherlands would keep them safe. The signs were definitely all there after Kristallnacht.
Anne's family had actually tried to escape to America under refugee status was but denied. There's a larger amount of Americans today that agree with accepting Syrian refugees than Americans that agreed with accepting Jewish refugees during WWII era.
Had the United States allowed them refuge then Anne Frank along with her mother and sister would probably have survived the Holocaust and Anne may have lived a long life and may have even still been alive to this day. Yet the United States refused to help them which resulted in the deaths of Anne and her mother and sister during the Holocaust thus making the United States partly responsible for their deaths.

I'm not sure if you have ever read Anne's journal, but making it sound like the world is leeching off of the fame of a Jewish girl who died in WWII is not a very accurate depiction of the actual facts here. In her diary Anne mentions, on at least two occasions, that she intends to publish her journal after the war. In fact, the idea for this developed right after she heard a minister on the radio talk about diaries and other official personal accounts of WWII that should be made available to the public after the war as a reminder that such a horrid thing as WWII should never happen again. The whole reason she even started honing her skills and editing her journal was because of this radio announcement. To then imply that her iconicity is a direct result of the world looking for a sad little victim is only half true. Anne intended for this to happen. Surely she didn't intend to die, but the diary was always meant to go public. Whether or not her diary would have made as much of an international impact had Anne survived is something we can only guess at. Probably not. But anyway, whatever the case may be, it remains important that her story be told and that the world is not necessarily leeching off of her. The Anne Frank Foundation is a non-profit organization, intend on keeping her story alive, keeping all of those victims alive through Anne.
Also, you make it sound like Otto only went back to Amsterdam to retrieve Anne's diaries. Which is again a half truth. Miep was the one who saved Anne's diaries. Otto had no idea those diaries had been saved by anyone until Miep presented them to him.
I don't want to sound too nit-picky, and I know you meant well, but as a Dutchy I couldn't help but want to set the record straight on this one.
Also, I realize your comment could also be interpreted to mean that WWII turned her into an icon; that if it never would have happened then we never would have been forced to even consider such a thing as a WWII icon. However, the way you phrased it made that whole part of the video rather ambiguous :/.
JustJacq he isn’t saying that we are seeking to pity an unwilling martyr. Rather he’s saying that due to the Holocaust and the sufferings brought, Anne wasn’t able to live and accomplish her dreams, but was hunted and ultimately leading to her death. I think he means Anne wasn’t able to pursue her dreams as she might have intended and who knows what potential she may have achieved has she lived. He’s really saying it’s a tragic loss, and this poor girl died over pointless hatred and prejudice.

Anne's book was published at the bookstore my grandmother was working at. She still has interview recordings About the release of the book with Otto. Otto was fluent in Dutch. When my grandmother got her first child she named Him Frank. Otto had passed away by then. My father was called Frank in honor of Otto and his lost family.

I went to Anne Frank House last week, even with being so familiar with the story I still cried!
If anyone didn’t know there were actually pages TAKEN OUT of Anne Frank diary that her father Otto took out when publishing the book! The father took them out because it didn’t paint their family in a good light (Anne would speak about the frustration she had with fights with her family) and she spoke of sexuality since she was in fact a budding teen. If anything it shows her to be more more of the normal teenage girl that she was, but it is interesting historically speaking to learn more about her life and thoughts, google it!
We took a field trip to see Eva schloss live and she was talking about her experience as well as Anne frank it was a beautiful and sad story

Eva Schloss is still currently alive today and was one of Anne's friends before her mother's new marriage or even before they went into hiding for that matter. She talks a lot about her life in the Holocaust and her and Anne's friendship in her autobiography "After Auschwitz." It's a beautiful novel, in my opinion. This was an amazing video though. Thank you so much

You made a common etymological error at 00:13, the name does not originally mean free or freeman, it derives from the old germanic root *freca meaning something like "fierce" and/or "greedy" (cf. Odins wolf "freki"). The common equation frank=free is a later derivation from the name of the franks themselves, because they constituted the free upper class in the franconian empire with its mostly non frank but gallo-roman inhabitants

The cousin/nephew (idk) of my grandmothers mother was Johannes Kleiman, one of Anne Franks helpers.
Maybe a bit far removed from myself, but still cool. My grandmother lived in amsterdam during the hunger winter. She sometimes tells stories about her childhood and it’s so interesting.

I read a book called “number the stars” about a family like the franks. I only remember one fact really, the fact that they used cocaine to numb dogs noses so they couldn’t smell them. They put the cocaine on a rag and the dog had to smell it (to check for weapons I think) and then their noses went numb.

Eva Schloss is actually still alive! She and Anne were friends when they were little and lived next door to each other. She went into hiding around the same time Anne did. She's 91 years old and lives in London and has three children :)
I am a relative of the Frank family from Amsterdam and my direct relatives are Otto Frank and one of his daughters. I am sad because a lot of the Frank family died, but happy that Otto Frank did survive. Miep Gies died in 2010, but is remembered by many because she kept all or most of the Frank family items in case someone and/or a few people survived.
When Otto Frank returned, she gave him Anne's diary and some other things from that unfaithful day when the family had been found by the Gestapos. As for the video, there are some Frank families, but I don't know how many of them are related to Otto and/or Anne Frank.
Eva S. is very much alive and is promoting her book about her life as Anne's stepsister-- after Anne's death. Eva has 3 grown daughters.
