Not really. As the other commenter said, he was number 1 for a very brief period, but I don't remember ever thinking of him as one of the true greats of his era. If memory serves, Sampras and Agassi were still regarded as the greats before Federer (say, in the first few years of the 2000s), even though they were in the twilight of their careers. I would classify Roddick, Hewitt, and a few others as second-tier players of that era.

absolutely, roddick lacked talent to be top tier, he was a fantastic server, one of the best in history, but when faced against a super talent like federer you could clearly see the gap between the two@@davidstewart1757 hewitt was the same, hard working but lacking talent, but Id say hewitt was below roddick because he wasnt a powerful player like roddick, didnt have a great serve or heavy hits like roddick. Roddick on a great day could beat anyone, hewitt couldnt, and roddick normal level was above hewitt's, particularly in fast surfaces, like wimbledon or the US open

@@juanaltredo2974 This is a great comment. I agree with almost every word you said. I think the only possible disagreement between us might be that I would rate prime/peak Hewitt a bit more highly than you seem to. Granted, he was never really "dominant" per se (it's difficult for a baseline player to dominate) and, like you said, lacked the power and perhaps athleticism of Roddick. However, during the brief stretch that Hewitt was at his very peak, I seem to remember him being in contention for Grand Slams more consistently than Roddick. But maybe my memory is failing me. It's been a long time.

aftwr typing my message I thought I was a bit harsh with hewitt, he was a sensation when he first appeared on the circuit. My recollection of him back then was like a better michael chang. Looking back he had something of Nadal, without his lefty trickiness and shot making ability from the back, but he shared his mental toughness and his ability to get to impossible balls@@davidstewart1757
