The most significant win of Roger's career. What a performance that was, especially in the fifth set. Relaxed Federer is a marvel to witness, a true art form, and I think he was very calm in this match because he respects Rafa so much.
Having that 2009 heartbreak and the 2012&14 losses in his mind going into the 5th set and down 1-3 at the start...being able to clear all that and produce 5 magnificent games to seal the title is sth cant be explained by word. GOAT level stuff that was
@@carsonlei1457 true. And I feel the same about Rafa in the 2022 Final. 4 losses in his previous 4 Finals, lost first 2 sets e serve 2/3, 0/40. How he believed?
Wimb 2019 would have been bigger if he had converted the MPs. Beating Nadal and Nole back to back at neaely 38 years old would have been insane. This loss will be the most painful of all.
Exactly what I was about to say. Six years later and I'm there again. There's a long history between the two with lots of amazing moments and matches but I rank this match as top 3 of all matches I've seen, I'm very tempted to put it as the best match ever from an experience point of view, never ever will I forget this match.

One of the most epic wins ever. When he developed the neo backhand he really neutralized Nadal's forehand and beat him in big consecutive tournaments. The GOAT for me!
What a tournament this was, an injection of nostalgia. As a Fedal fan, it gave me everything I wanted. For a moment, we were back in the late 2000’s 🥹 Good luck in the future, Roger 👏
Yeah, and also quite a nostalgic women's final with Serena and Venus! Like it was the last slam to enjoy all of these past great champions playing truly great tennis
Dear Roger, most of your tennis career I have been too young to see you live, the last few years I have spent countless hours watching each of your matches, most of your great plays and great points I know by heart, your statistics , and absolutely everything you have achieved as a tennis player, I know. Unfortunately I haven't had the honor of attending a tennis stadium to see you play, it's something I've always dreamed of. Even so, I want to thank you for everything you have achieved, for what you are as a person, as a player, for everything you have given to tennis, for the number of tennis players you have inspired to improve and for so many joys, since I can remember you are my favorite tennis player and my idol, you are a turning point in tennis itself, since you entered the circuit you have revolutionized the way we see and understand this sport, you are the reason I started watching tennis, and the reason why I will continue looking into the future, and no matter how much time passes, you will never be a memory, you are eternal, the best of all time, it was never about the statistics, but about what you transmit in people as a tennis player, your game is so simple and perfect at the same time, it is something incomparable. I hope one day to have the fortune and honor to meet you and be able to take a picture with you, I would be the happiest person in the world, but even so, I want to thank you infinitely for everything, and also tell you that you will never be a memory, you will be eternal, the very tennis in person, The Best of All Time ❤️🥇👑
The NEO backhand, the best comeback of all time, the Fairytale, the most iconic rivalry & the greatest player Federer behind a million emotions & magic moments! ✨✨ You'll be remembered forever & you'll always be my hero ❤
Everybody remembers exactly where they were when this match was being played. Such is the significance of this match, what a final between two players who have elevated this sport to a different level. Thank you Roger!
My favourite athlete :(( the day has come, been through the ups and downs, I’ll never forget how he won the AO in 17, Wimbledon in 17 & AO again in 18. Proved everyone wrong & helped inspired a martial artists like myself. I’m now 23 years old but tennis was the first sport I loved growing up! Thank you for everything! All aboard the fedexpress!
The anticipation that these 2 legends create is really next level. Can't believe they played at RG 2019 and Wimbledon 2019 after this but never faced each other at US open in more than 15 years of their rivalry!
I always thought this was the greatest victory of Fed's career. What's interesting is that the match played out v similar to the 2009 AO open final ... except different result in the 5th.
Im from Europe and in 2013 i traveled to Australia to see him play ... not his best year but the two matches that i got to see (quarter finals and semis) were a total previlage to watch - also i got to see him practice ... a dream .... hundreds of fans floking around him (where as at the time when Djokovic was at his best (and at no 1 - there were about 50 people at his practise sessions) anyway you get the point ...
For me, it is an honour to have an opportunity to watch Federer and Nadal on court, doing things, they know the best: playing this wonderful game and entertaining millions of people. I simply cant imagine anything better in tennis, than these two playing against each other. This match was the best 3 and a half hours of my life....... I remember watching the final on TV like it was just couple of months ago. I cant belive it has been more than five years. The one thing that I have allways admired about Mr. Federer was his ability to stay insanely calm and cool during the points of the greatest importance. Saving matchballs vs Millman and Sandgren in AO 2020 was just another proof of him being the true G.O.A.T. of tennis. Thank you for all the memories Roger :)
Most epic battle! I will never forget this! Roger's NEO backhand is so devastating... His weak point has become the strong point and he beat Rafa... That's very emotional🥲
The king being the king. He conquered his generation and trained two of the best tennis player in history. Rafa and Nole that’s his biggest achievement.
@Australian Open TV - Now that Roger has retired, please try and consider uploading all his matches from Australian Open in this amazing quality. All of his matches should be publicly available now, they should be selected for preservation as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", just like the US Library of Congress does with classic outstanding movies.
Roger and Rafa ARE men's tennis. Over and over these two warriors would bring out the best and worse in one another. This match again revived the maestro. That was enough for Roger to keep winning more big titles. Then the knee began again to give Roger more troubles than his body could take. A player of unappreciated grit and hustle. Here Roger had to battle his mental demons to conquer his greatest rival and nemesis yet AGAIN! Now Roger will make the Laver cup his last outing as a pro. As much as I would've loved to have seen him comeback just one more time, I am happy for the man. He has nothing more to prove, and his all-round all surface genius will remain exclusively his to savor. I find it a telling time, not just because of the retirement announcement, but now the game has a new superstar in none other than Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz. He has idolized Roger and it shows in the kids explosive aggression and exquisite shot making abilities. At just 19yrs Carlos appears to channel not just Roger's everything, but Rafael's hustle and self belief, and Carlos is as acrobatic if not more so than the human Rubber band Novak Djokovic. Yes, I believe we have Roger, and Rafael/Djokovic to thank for this new kid on the block. To be the player he is at such a young age, cannot be possible without these 3 legends of this great game.. This complex and demanding game will continue to evolve and usher in new talents and hopefully, more legends. We have been very blessed for many years to have had unique and extraordinary talents like Roger, Rafael, and Djokovic. You will never be forgotten Roger. The world loves you. Be happy man, you have earned it. Now, on to different and new successes. You are a living legend. PEACE OUT GREAT WIZARD, YOU WILL CONTINUE TO SUCCEED! ✌🏽✊🏾☝🏽🧠🫀💪🏾👀
Probably the only loss in Rafa’s career where I wasn’t too upset over the result, considering we had a throwback Fedal final, considering Rafa’s struggles in 2015-16, and because Federer 100% deserved it.
What a trip on memory lane watching these highlights, one of the greatest finals ever. The speed of that court really suited Federer’s game especially his backhand! Wish hardcourts over the past decade were this way

Just watching the new gen guys play in 2024 and Sinner has just won the Aus Open. Tennis really has gotten so monotonous since Federer - Everyone is an athlete and less of a tennis player. Everyone is standing much behind the baseline and every rally is a matter or endurance than anything else. I so miss Federer playing genius points standing right at the line - I doubt anyone of the new players will be able to effectively play at such speed with the ball being taken so early. Many years later people might feel that the game was slower watching Federer play but it was indeed the opposite - the pt at 3:10 will underline this
