    A casual hike on Dumpling Mountain Trail in Katmai National Park led to a very up close and personal encounter with a brown bear. What a wild way to end our honeymoon!

    I worked at Yellowstone National Park, and a little advice is don't giggle so soon just because the bear walked by. They have no problem circling around and coming from behind you after they passed by you the first time. Always have 2 cans of full bear spray, and wear something like a bell that alerts the bear that your there

    I’m in Northern Ontario and have had countless run ins with black bears. Granted, black bears are not nearly as intimidating as Grizzlies, but they could eat me for a snack all the same,....if they so desired. But that’s my point, they usually just move on, and don’t pay much attention to me. There was one occasion where I had a large male huff at me three or four times, but that’s because I surprised him. He too, then moved on. Most bears just want to be left alone, again.MOST, not all. Make lots of noise when out on the trails.

    I`m so happy to finally see a video of people doing the correct thing in this situation! I`ve watched several videos where people walk backwards on the trail and think the bear is chasing them. In those videos you can tell by the bear`s body language that it isn't angry or being aggressive. They are simply taking the easiest way through the terrain by walking on a path they've used hundreds of times before. In one video the sow was so relaxed that she allowed her two cubs to run out ahead of her. Not exactly the posture of a defensive mother.

      M RC Have you watched Backcountry? I’m totally for not making animals out to be dangerous especially when humans are by far the bigger threat in an encounter with any animal. But, the stories of the rare grizzly attacks are the stuff of nightmares. So, to say they came close to death is accurate. That grizzly could have easily turned those humans into the equivalent of the antelope in those lion hunting videos. I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t ever want to be the antelope. It’s a scary thought. Those people lived because that grizzly allowed it.
      Either way, they shouldn’t be hunted or bothered or feared but respected and protected.

      @kicka55 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joeskeptical4762 You can outrun a bear downhill. So when you camp in bear town make sure it's on a good incline. Bears are front heavy so they would fall over and roll chasing you. However, in 99% of the cases bears won't eat you. They just want to scare you away. If bears would eat humans they would be long extinct, so they must've grown an instinct to not mess with humans by evolution. (Like most animals actually) Exceptions prove the rule.
      Now if you really want to scare a predator away you have to act rabid. Open your eyes as much as you can like a crazy person and do all kinds of werid robotic movements. That triggers their rabid instinct to get the fuck out.
      Just imagine a mouse, normally humans have nothing to fear of mice. But if it comes running at you like a nut head you fucking start to scream and run, despite a 1000x weight difference. That's OUR evolved instinct kicking in to not mess with crazzed mice.

    A few years ago a friend and I encountered a large black bear coming back to our cabin late afternoon at Mammoth Lakes. We all surprised each other as we were walking up our driveway and the bear walked off of the front porch less than 10 meters a way and stood up to confront us. Weirdly neither of us spoke a word. We stopped, raised our arms in the air and started shouting at the bear. It stood there for a few seconds and suddenly dropped down on all fours and trotted away. I think it may have been hibernating in the crawl space under the cabin since it had been unoccupied for months. It didn't seem all that scary at the time, but if it had charged us I would have a much different story to tell that's for sure.

      I have bear bells on both of my mountain bikes, and also carry a small marine compressed air signal horn, (about the size and weight of a cell phone) which will work in windy conditions and doesn't need to be aimed. I got that tip from a long distance runner who lives in bear country, Alaska. the big thing is make noise all the time, most encounters are because the bears didn't know humans were there!

  • @schuylerjones2213
    @schuylerjones2213 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ok so..I had a close encounter with a bear before I knew anything about it. After,I researched and now KNOW. Bear spray is a must when going into the back country. Two cans very accessible and know how to use it. It has been proven that more people die trying to shoot a bear and bear spray is over 90 percent effective even with a charging bear. As far as bear bells,I used to use one but then I was told by my uncle who is around bears in his property daily..that the bear bells make them curious and they want to come see what that is..the best thing to do is make human noises. When hiking,if there is a turn or anywhere I'm unsure of I just say.."HEY BEAR!"....no encounters since. I have seen bears at a distance but no close encounters.

Were you climbing Dumpling Mountain for the view? There are plenty of trails like that one across the country where you don't have to worry about crossing paths with a brown bear. I'm sure you can get to many incredible sites and bear watching in Katmai NP while in the safety of a tour group or vehicle. Did you have bear spray? If not, why not? Great video though!
