    Hint: Swap out the PVC pipe as your mixer for the nutrient tanks & replace it with a short stiff hair broom. Use one broom for tank A & a second broom for tank B. Makes the mixing much faster.

    Thanks a lot for making and sharing these videos. Very helpful! I have few questions would like to ask:
    - Do you totally flush out the reservoir tank some time, or just add nutrient solution into it? If yes, how often you flush it?
    - How often you mix the new nutrient solution in the nutrient tanks?
    - Do you have any insulation for the reservoir tank? Do you monitor temperature inside of the reservoir tank and what is it in the winter time? (I am in Nova Scotia so I guess we have same kind of winters).

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you. I will try my best to answer.
      -Yes because salt builds up in the solution after the plants take in the nutrients. About once a month or more.
      -Depends on how much we are dosing. Every couple weeks or so.
      -No insulation for the tank but it stays warm with the solution contantly flowing in and out and through the greenhouse.

      It may pay to look into having the nutrient tested to see if you can gain extra mileage by amending the elemental content. If you can double the life of the solution with amendments you will reduce your overall chemical and water cost and as a bonus halve the impact on the environment :)

      @HomegrownPassion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot! That weird looking wall behind the tanks in our "air conditioner." I'm not sure if you've seen them, but water trickles down the little grooves while fresh air is pulled through by the exhaust fans at the front of the greenhouse. It does a great job in the summer time, although I'm sure it gets much hotter down in Texas. We only hit 90 - 95° a few times a year if that.

    fantastic video, thanks! does this system mean that there is one nutrient profile for the whole greenhouse? you couldn't grow 2 different crops that needed say 5.8pH and 6.3pH, and EC of 1.0 and 1.6? Second question; if the above is true, then do you choose crops that have similar needs to go in the same greenhouse?

      @@HomegrownPassion I almost forgot, the farm is about 5 hours away from me right now. It is 48 acres north of Springfield Mo. 18 acres are hay and the rest has cattle running on it. Not my cattle but a neighbors cattle. He keeps an eye on everything until I can relocate back down there. There is an old house on the front of the property, that my stepfather used as a base of operations for the farm. There is a moderately gentle slope down to the front. I would like to build a south facing greenhouse that starts out underground if that makes sense. We will see if I actually do it. I could see selling fresh vegetables and fruits from that old house though. A neighbor down the road has 9 hives of bees, I am sure I could sell that through the store. 😂

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When the EC needs adjusted, we can change the setting on the controller next to the tanks. It reads the EC in the reservoir with an EC probe, and will take the correct amount of nutrients out of the blue tanks and add it into the reservoir tank. We check the blue tanks often to see when we need to mix more nutrients.

    Hello and thank you for the vid! Quick question, The PH and EC works for lettuce but do you also use the same parameters for all the other veggies in the NFT system aswell? im assuming your range of veggies are also good with lettuce EC and PH parameters? One more question, any reason why you dont use a ready nutrient mix? like a lettuce masterblend formula NPK bag with added CalNit separately?

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good questions. We use the same formula for everything in the NFT channels, so lettuce, greens, herbs, microgreens. The formula we use was specifically made to go along with our source water. Ma'am for lettuce pH 5.8 and how much should be TDS for good plantation of lettuce??

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We us E.C. as our measurement rather than TDS. pH 5.8 is perfect and E.C. of 1.7 I found this chart that can hopefully help. hydro-gardens.com/ec-to-tds-conversion/

    • @rich53703

      i would think its your water. some water needs ph up some needs ph down

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, get your water analyzed but PH can be affected by other things you are adding to your system. Our PH starts at 7.5 so we always need to drop it. Some nutrients will lower or raise the PH

      We flush and clean the big reservoir tank every three weeks. We clean the inside of the blue tanks when ever the nutrients run out and before we put mix the new ones.

    • @HomegrownPassion

      They can work great. As long as the p.h. in the final nutrient solution is around 5.8 then you should do well.

      @@HomegrownPassion I heard that for tomatoes it's better to have PH between 6,2 to 6,5. What do you think about PH for the herbs?

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep the 5.8 is for lettuce. We have the herbs growing right along with the lettuce in the same nutrient solution and they seem to do well. I'm hoping to show the tomato nutrients soon. We haven't had to mix any for them lately since they are still small.

    • @HomegrownPassion

      I think it would do well. It can sustain a family because you can grow all year long and turn many more crops than you can in soil.

      Yes. I had my water analyzed so I knew exactly what was in my source water and then built a nutrient recipe on that analysis. That allowed me to mix up my own nutrients from bulk which saves a ton of money and gives you better control of your solution
