    My Rainbow Kitty, Chynna, loved getting her nails trimmed. It was like a day at the spa for her. She would lay there, and let me cut her nails, both front and back, and then lay there and purr while I massaged her paws and toes, while she hugged my hand and gave gentle kisses and nibbles in return. The whole thing took about 30 minutes or more, and we both enjoyed the time together.

      SakuraEtsu2007 I would very much appreciate a reply if you see this comment. I just trimmed my cats nails for the first time. she is an inside kitty only so she doesn't need to worry about defending herself. I trim my dogs nails so I'm aware of the quick and how careful to be. I can actually see my cats quicks as her nails are clear. I just trimmed a tiny bit off the tips because I didn't want to leave her with nothing to scratch with. theres plenty of nail left before the quick. but how short should I trim them? I know with my hounds I try to get them as short as possible so we don't have to do it as often. thanks for any advice!

    i know this is an old vid, but telling me to use human nail cutters sideways was the best advice i could get! my cat's ingrown nails were too thick for her cat nail trimmers, and we just used a human toenail trimmer (straight blades)...and it worked perfect. no digging into her paw pads now!

    Video is helpful in understanding the technique for trimming nails. I added a simple behavior mod technique that works for us. I took trimming my cats' nails slowly. We sat together a few days and I pressed on the paws, released, and gave them a treat (Temptations). The next few times I trimmed one nail, release, and treat. Eventually, we moved to two nails and then four. I have not gotten to two paws at one sitting--yet, but my cats and I are ok taking it slowly and happily. Try it and I think you will avoid the cat-from-hell scenario.

    Yes. Styptic can even come in the form of like a soap bar and it was very commonly used back in the day of straight razor shaving. A drugstore, Walgreens, CVS, or an a local drugstore in the older part of your town would most likely have it. This in powder form probably works best on animals.

I didn't cut them too short because I was afraid of hurting them and it was my first time so I think I did okay. They definitely have to get used to it but they did well

    Im gonna be cutting my cat’s nails for the first time and if I remember correctly my mother would say that cutting the nail parallel to the curve ( 0:51 90dagrees from how its done here) has less of a chance of crashing the actual nail. i can’t remember if that’s actually what she said but I remember SOMETHING about cutting it a certain way to avoid the nail getting crushed aside from avoiding the vain inside it. does anyone have any information about that or am I better off taking him to a vet/groomer?
    his nails being sharp has never been an issue for his health and as far as his scratching habits go he’s more well behaved in that regard than any other cat ive seen so ive always just kept an eye on it to make sure he never got an ingrown nail and simply got used to the minor scrapes and cuts to my skin but he needs to take medication every day that he hates and coming up i may need someone to come in and do it for me since i may be away from the house for a day and id hate for the person coming in to get even slightly scratched by a somewhat stranger cat for trying to help out.
    To long, didn’t read:
    I know about avoiding the vain in the nail. im concerned i may crush my cats nail depending on wether i cut it like he did in 0:51 or if the clippers were rotated 90 degrees

    I am a new kitten owner.
    A friend says you only need to trim the front paws every 2 weeks
    to deter them from climbing and tearing up furniture .
    He says he only trims the back paws every month or 2.
    Our kitten is hard to hold still, so I am anxious to do this as quickly
    and with as little effort as possible.
    He also said to give them treats when it is done.

    Ah I have been terrified of cutting my cats nails too short. It seems I could cut more off than I am. I adopted her from a shelter two weeks ago (that apparently didn’t cut her nails) and they were like hypodermic needles when she would knead on me. Now they’re like less sharp hypodermic needles but it looks like I could make them so wearing jeans or something would keep the kneading safe and pain-free for her human friends. She’s not a huge fan of the nail trimming but is still relatively cooperative. I give her chicken & gravy baby food as a special treat for not fighting me during this task. She only gets this sort of treat when she does something unnatural (but necessary for her health) like let me handle her paws.

    • @NorBdelta
      @NorBdelta 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cats only scratch when they feel threatened or are frightened. IF you are careful with your body language, etc. Most of the time they dont feel safe, hence the scratching. Most cats are quite pliable once they get used to things like this. Some cats dont even blink.

      I think cats are reflective of their living conditions/owners. My cats are the sweetest ever, and I baby them. The only time one of my cats scratched me was when I was messing with him, but he looked sooo guilty afterward. Otherwise, cats are only harmful if they feel threatened. You can also get softpaws for cats so you don't have to worry about them scratching up your furniture

    • @elvetrovfan
      @elvetrovfan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A cat will not scratch you unless you scare or hurt it. It will require a scratching post as they need to keep their claws down but will require a visit to the vet to get the nails properly trimmed, unless you can learn how to do it safely yourself. Be aware some cats will also scratch your furniture. Cat ownership comes at a price - be aware Don't get one if you are not aware of the responsibilities, vet fees, food costs etc. And you must be prepared to love it unconditionally!

      I would argue with that. If they have nails, they scratch you, even by accident. Every friend I have that owns cats and plays with them has a ton of scratches to show me. If you have your cat just to roam around the house then yes you only have scratches if you mess with it

    It's also worth mentioning that the claws of a cat can build up a lot of bacteria. This is common in outdoor cats but can occur with indoor cats from their litter boxes. If your cat's claws are sharp enough to cause damage to your skin, you could be at risk of a bacterial infection if it scratches you. My cat pricked the palm of my hand with his claws a while ago and as I type this the area is turning red and starting to numb a bit. I recommend washing your cat's paws regularly to prevent bacterial build up. If your cat ever claws you, wash the area thoroughly with soap to stop the infection from spreading. Worst case scenario, you'll get a fever and a build up of bacteria in the scratched area, causing a growth, and you'll have to be hospitalized for about a week or so.
    Cats are pretty dangerous :(

      Bambang Setiyawan If your cat is indoors one, you cant be a good cat owner.
      1.Cats clean themselves, only times you have to bathe them is if they are very dirty, and even then a little bit
      2.Cats dont have nails for no reason. So dont trim his nails!

    Dear Dr. Mike. I had always placed my clippers so that that blades held the claw between the blades with the top blade on the top of the claw and the bottom blade coming up to meet it from the bottom or underside of the claw, which seems to be what you are doing here. However, the young lady later on this video seems to been squeezing the sides of the claws between the two blades instead, which I thought might crush the nail when close to the quick and cause pain. Which is the proper way to clip: the top and bottom of the claw between the blades, or the two sides between the blades? Thank you, Deirdre Powers

    For anyone who's got a high energy demon cat lemme offer some advice:
    -put on music you know both you and your cat can relax to
    -play with the cat until it gets tired out. If it falls asleep somewhere else, slowly pick them up and let them fall asleep in your lap
    -pet them while they doze off, and slowly move down the leg and push on the toe pad slowly until the nail is exposed, and hold that position until they fall asleep again
    -bring the nail trimmer to the nail and cut off just the tip, where the hook happens. DO NOT GO FOR THE CUT IF YOU DONT FEEL 100% COMFORTABLE WITH THE POSITION OT THEIR PAW. DO NOT TRY TO CUT DEEP. Especially if it's their first time getting trimmed, they're going to struggle for a bit learning to adapt to life without sharp claws.
    -the hind legs are the same concept but it's a little trickier for you to get the paw in a good position.

      I have to my 10 week old kitten and I did it when I first got him when he was 5 weeks old. My vet said there was nothing wrong with it and it's better to do it while they are young because they get use to it

    • @XwolfbaneXx
      @XwolfbaneXx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      sure it's better to do it when they're young, however there are other ways to make them comfortable with cutting their nails. such as handling their paws at a young age.

    • @bmwvillan
      @bmwvillan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rowan Wolf I agree with you, But I was saying there is nothing wrong with clipping them at young ages like 3 weeks and up. Them getting use to it is a bonus.

    • @XwolfbaneXx
      @XwolfbaneXx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah! i just heard differently from my vet - but i think she was wrong.. i decided to read a little more about it and it seems like cutting the claws as early as possible seems to be ideal to get them used to it. plus, tiny needle-like claws can pose a risk to other kittens in the litter during play; so it's best to keep them trimmed early.
