This the best 16 minutes I've spent in my quest to learn pickleball and share my new favorite sport with friends! Great job Lisa in demonstrating the REASONS why the rules are the way they are to make the game more fair! Everyone talks about the rules, but very few say why the game was made that way. I've never heard it explained so succinctly as you've done here, bravo!!!
As a club member and leader who has several aspiring and novice pickleballers in my club, this is an amazing video to have new players watch before training and club play can begin. Great work!
I’m in Canada and was just thinking two days ago about searching on You Tube on how to play pickleball. And here it is!! Thank you so much Michael and Lisa for doing this introduction to pickleball video. It looks like a fun game to play. I’m 60 years old and am looking for a physical activity to compliment my daily step count in walking. I hope everyone in my family’s favourite state (ever to visit) of Oregon is doing well. We hope to be back real soon!
I've only played pickleball once so this video is so very helpful for a newbie to this sport like myself. Thank you for making such a thorough and well paced video.
I live in Beaverton oregon. One of my coworkers has been trying to get me to play pickleball for months. I never looked it up. I'm addicted already! I learned to play badminton in the club in Suwon, South Korea & Madrid Spain and have been missing badminton greatly. I got an American version! Hooah!
Three questions: 1) What score are we playing to? 2) Do you have to win by 2 as in tennis or table tennis? 3) Is singles Pickleball a thing, or does it need to be teams?
1) The standard score to play to is 11 2) The standard is to win by 2 points 3) Yes. There is singles in Pickleball...either "skinny singles" which means you play just one side of the court or singles can play the full court
Wow, my family started playing this game on tennis courts when I was a kid. We didn't play tennis, but we used the wood beach paddles and instead of this ball, we used tennis balls. The rules were almost the same, and we used the same space on the tennis court. We also played in doubles. This allowed the older people to play, and we weren't shooting tennis balls out of the court, due to never playing tennis in our lives.
I'm a tennis player and just beginning at pickelball. Very good explanation of the basics, but as others have already commented the video would have been better if the basics of scoring were included. When do players switch sides? What's the reason for including the player number as part of the score?
You can only score a point when you are serving. If you serve and lose the point, the serve goes over to the opponent which is a side-out. In doubles play, both of you get to serve and lose the point before the serve goes over to the other team (side-out). Hence, the need to include which server number you are when serving.
Why did you switch from tennis to pickelball? The whole thing seems unnecessary to me. What am I missing? Or is this just another fad and way for sports equipment companies to make more money? Enlighten me.
Maybe I missed it, but it's important to note that you must be serving to get a point. Also, game is usually to 11 and you must win by two points. You should also clarify if balls hitting the line are in or out. Thanks!
I learned to play in the 80s when I lived in Washington State. My cousin's husband taught me. It was so much fun. I'd played tennis for years, but never heard of Pickle Ball. It's sort of like mini-me tennis. Very fun. Shout out to Brian Gray for learning me some PB. 😁
Great video, Thank You! I was a longtime tennis player and just started playing PickleBall. The toughest thing so far was keeping score,(the full body soreness the next day), but now it makes sense. Love it so far! Thanks again!
It's NOT mini tennis. It's a cross between tennis and ping pong. It's really fun! I am not an expert by far BUT if you have an athletic background such as I do, you will find it very satisfying for working out. If you don't have hand eye coordination, strongly advise against it as you can hurt yourself! Give it a shot though! It's alot of fun!
You two have made it so easy to understand, thank you! I have been struggling to understand the game and i feel like i'm walking away with so much more information.
I think it's great that the rest of the country seems to be learning to playing pickle ball now, whereas it's been huge in the lower Midwest for at least the last 30 + years. Have fun.
Excellent demonstration how the play rules are! For me Pickleball is completely new. I had an introduction today. Besides tennis and badminton I find this game is quick, and great for movement for the lower back. I think I am persuaded!
This video is wonderful it enhances my interest n knowledge I ve to study few more time about yourPickle ball vedio in order to improve my practice Thanks
Thank you! There needs to be more clarity about the score keeping, though. Do you only score points when serving? Do both players on a team serve before the other team serves?
Yes you only score points when your team has served, and yes both players get a turn at serving each turn except for the first turn. As Lisa explained, The first team to serve each game only gets one person serving. Then it goes to the other side when they have not scored a point.
This is wonderful information, we just got pickleball in our CCRC in So.Fl. With the easy way you explained the scoring especially helps. You all seem like such lovely people there. Thank all of you in the video.
Great explanation of of scoring! I'm a newbie and took an intro class last week. The scoring was very confusing but your explanation cleared it all up! Thank you thank you thank you!
@@thomasjedreski7885 unlike in tennis where the server gets 2 faults, in pickleball each server only gets 1 attempt to land a good serve. its kind of like innings in baseball or something. its like this - if you are on the serving team, the first server (#1) will continue to serve and score until their is a fault against their team. then the second server (#2) will do the same. in theory the person who starts the game could be the only server of the game if they score enough points in a row ;)

i've just started watching videos of PB because I want to learn how to play. Yours is one of the best i've seen thus far. There are still a few questions I have (such as what does "side out" mean but I guess I'll get that sooner or later.
Very clear and concise explanation. Maybe I missed this detail but, one thing I still don’t have clear is… does the server always have to serve from the right side of the court or can it serve from either side?

Basically, table tennis on ground, therefore looks similar to tennis, but in reality closer to table tennis. But simpler than table tennis, because it does not have spinning. Good from 5 to 85 years old. But still can be competitive among 20’s. Great sport.

Very good video. When a ball does land in the kitchen and you step into the kitchen to hit the ball , don’t you have to leave the kitchen area after you’ve it it? What happens is the person stays in the kitchen?
great question. strangely, the answer to your question is no. in fact, you could spend all game every game in the kitchen its just not a good idea. you want to get out of the kitchen so you dont 1. get hit by a ball or 2. volley a ball from the kitchen by instinct. the rule is in the name, its the NO VOLLEY ZONE, you can Stand there, Take a Nap there, Dance a Jig, do anything you like just dont volley the ball out of the air ;)
