DIY GoPro LEGO Stabiliser Build Tutorial Producttank

  • Following the Lego stabiliser video I made, a few people asked for a build tutorial. This video shows you how to build a simple DIY Lego Camera stabiliser. I've used a GoPro Camera, but if you own another small video camera or a smart phone, you can easily adapt the design to suit what ever you have, as long as you understand the principles.
    I have greatly simplified this build from the previous design, so that it is easier to make and uses less Lego, so will cost less to build than the previous design if you don't already have enough Lego lying around from your childhood.
    I like making things and I like making camera stabilisers, they appeal to me because of the principles and the fine tuning involved. But if making things is not where your passion lies and you just want to get straight to the filming, camera stabilisers are now so inexpensive, it would make much more sense to just purchase one.

    Just want to point out that you should be using black connector pegs, not grey ones because the grey ones have way less friction then the black ones.

    I'm certain one could get some lightweight extruded aluminium and use a self-built jig to ensure equal distancing of holes to make the 'frame' of this sort of thing using all-metal parts.
    Retain the ability to adjust the position of things like the balancing weight (cantilever?), its offset on the crossbar at the bottom, allow for the use of heavier-duty springs and a larger, heavier camera, and have an overall more durable, longer-lasting and easier to 'take down and set up' system once one's done building it.

    producttank hi i like this idea its simple easy and cheap i wonder can you make some kind of stabilizer for mtb 🤔🤔🤔 like helmet and chest ????

  • @JD_Mortal
    @JD_Mortal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Built-in stabilizers have physical limits and result in lower image resolution and produce jittery video. This reduces the load and image quality reduction when used, together, with a camera's built-in stabilizer. Not to mention you get a much clearer shot.
    One way to make this better...
    1: Use a longer counter-weight attachment. (It should be at-least half the weight of the camera and the length of the whole unit should be nearly 2 to 3-feet or 60 to 100-cm.)
    2: Add some weight just under the camera, so there is an over-all greater mass to the unit.
    3: Make a spring tension adjustment.
    4: Use a low-friction "resistance dampening" connection for the joints. (Eg, shocks to go with the raw springs, to remove the "bounce".)
    5: Move the joint a bit further from the camera, downward. (Taking mind that #1 must also be done too.) Roughly a ratio of 1:6 or 1:10... If the distance from the camera to the pivot is 10cm, the total length should be about 60 to 100cm.
    This is why a broom-stick, with a water-bottle on the bottom, held about 6" under the camera, works well with just your arms natural "tension", as shocks.

    I tried building one of these rigs made with technics. The left/right and up and down were quite smooth but I couldn't get the back/forward to stop swinging.
    The part coming down was about 12 inches & the counter weight extended back about 16 inches. It balanced real nice. Any tips on reducing swing.

    • @producttank
      @producttank  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tim,, the counter weight is very long, suggesting something is out. Try moving the camera back towards the centre pivot point a bit which will allow you to greatly reduce the length of the counterbalance. Then keep adjusting weight where ever possible until you get that really slow swing.
