I would appreciate a review video on essential kit for new wild campers as I'm new to it all and would love if you could point me in the right direction, taking into account ease of putting stuff together and the least kit to carry for single night in spring time. So tent, ground mats, sleeping bag, cooking facilities, and essential waterproofs if needed and a decent pair of hiking boots. Obviously on a budget. What you feel is good enough to start to build on and ideal to gain experience with getting familiar
Showing the kit in action is the best way and I like the way you focused in on the tent logo, the viewer can gather the information they may want this way, but the enjoyment of the video and great outdoors isn't spoilt.
Great content as always, enjoyed watching that chilled out simple one for a change! Regarding content, I know this may not really be applicable to you as you have blue who seems to be made for camp life. But I’ve been wild camping for a bit now and I want to start taking my Rhodesian ridgeback as she loves the exercise, so all things dog kit recommendations would be much appreciated! Dog sleeping mat and blanket for my RR is essential 🙄😂
Blues lucky because his hair is so thick and a double coat so he’s good for cold conditions. I made his mat out of an old army Bivvy with loads of layers of foil in it. I might design something better for dogs soon👍
After you inspiring me to get out there, I positively escaped and went on a last minute walking holiday to the Isle of Mull - when I got back, I broke a 25 year habit going cold-turkey on cigarettes - nearly a month in and I'm feeling so much better, both physically and mentally. So, thanks so so much for exercising your mouth and the lecture, Al!!! 🤣 Still enjoying my bottle of vino at the weekend but even that's easier to cut down on now. I wouldn't say I'm particularly exercising more but when I am, I'm certainly getting much more out of the experience. Anyhoos, in summary, be reminded of how many lives you are helping to change for the better with your firm yet positive messages - thanks a bundle again, Al 🙏🙏🙏
Great stuff Al! Keeping it simple.. Yes! What more do we need? Don't apologise for thinking you might have come across as 'a bit preachy' ..You didn't. Wise words. Without going into my life story, I maybe 'enjoyed' my younger days a little too much. Ditching putting 'crap' (as you put it so well) into my body and getting out into the outdoors, I'm fitter and hungrier for life more than ever. The only problem is that now there never seems to be enough hours in the day or weeks in the year to satisfy my enthusiasm! SO many places to go, SO many things to see, SO many as-yet-unknown adventures to be had! I'm in the second half of my life now and without bragging, I'm more than a match for my younger friends (although I couldn't keep up with your dad!). Your message is spot on: Stop putting crap into our bodies, turn off the TV more often and get out there. Oh, and Al don't say things like 'an old fool like me', because you haven't even started mate!
What a great simple video 📹 👏 👌 Why dont you do a film on all of your kit? Where you keep it and just a simple explanation on what it does and what its used for? Summer and winter and so on 😊😊
Getting out in nature is definitely the best way to fill yourself with positive energy I couldn't spend my life without it. Another great feel good video Alan, all the positive best brother 👍🏻
Your videos are fantastic - such a good balance of all sorts of things…the kit, nature, adventure, exercise, benefits, company, weather, etc. Your positivity, attitude & outlook are inspirational - I hope you get as much in return from those who appreciate all that you give & do, as you give to others…you certainly deserve it! More kit reviews/ recommendations/ mentions would be amazing too. Would be great to know your thoughts on kit suitable for certain conditions/ seasons/ temperatures etc., & any advice/ kit you’d recommend based on different experience levels too (if you think that’d be helpful to others too, of course). Would be great to get your thoughts on building experience too…in case that helps others that are daunted about getting out due to fearing a lack of experience/ knowledge, to enable others to find a way to safely pursue the things they wish to & increase their abilities. Hope you don't mind me submitting my thoughts in response to your question about additional reviews...just hope they make at least some sense! 🤣
Brilliant as always! "Don't tell me....show me" as my old man always said! Your gear is seen where it needs to be seen, in the conditions it needs to be used in and that's more than good enough. That being said, knowing all the gear you have and where you have used it, doing your top choice kit reviews based on each season etc would be beneficial to many.
Did you say it was brewed in ALLEN. (Your name ?) I don't know how to listen anymore. My 77 years is starting to affect my brain I think. I don't put "crap" in my body I've been exercising "in place ", because of my not being able to walk. I DO feel better and I also can sense that my mental and physical body is rejecting the "foul" things of the world. Thank you for yourself, Blue and all your wonderful advice. I only wish that you had a magic exercise that would make me walk again. But I ❤ doing what I can and traveling with you, Steve. Foresty, Rudin, Xander, Jon and Erin, and the rest of you wonderful TH-camrs !!!
Agree with all of these words Al. I am approaching 40 and switching from bike racing over to running. Those 5k times of yours are impressive and something to aim for. Top work sir!
Been meaning to ask you if you can include reviews of your existing kit, so it’s great that you’ve raised this topic in this video. Aside from general camping and hiking kit, what kit have you got that suits your fast packing or trail running trips? How has that RAB jacket held up? What’s that lightweight blue insulated jacket you always pull out (not the phd one); even little things like wear-and-tear on stitching, or modifications you’ve made to kit. Really enjoy your videos and looking forward to seeing where you go with these new content ideas.
@rbaileyrb oh no, dont say that. Al is great if it wasn't for him motivating and showing us its good to go out and do things. I wouldn't be watching his videos. I appreciate him.
Al, what a great video. Solid looking tent and I’m always amazed how your mat stays in place as a seat back!! Love the advice and looking forward to seeing Blue back on the channel soon! Cheers from Nashville, Sully
Nice simple camp that fella with some great solitude time to recharge & reset, just like a old Nokia phone. 😂. Anyway, as always a pleasure to watch on a great journey. All the best Al lad. Take it easy
Great video. Always nice to reset things with a good stint in nature. You seem to have a knack for finding other people's trash. That is very frustrating for me. I hate finding trash when out in the wild as I am driven to pick it all up. Oh how I wish I could find the perpetrators and meet out a little justice.
another great vdeo! love all your vids and would be great to see some gear videos! Especially with winter on it's way. That's an amazing parkrun time too!
Now then Bushy!! Didn’t think I’d see you eating a pie, never mind two!! But if anyone deserves a treat it’s you. Missed Bluey, it’s like Ant without Dec when Blueys not with you. 😂😂😂❤❤❤
When it comes to gear I am mostly interested in why you use the gear you take on different trips. It can be as simple as "I like the colour". Also, it would be interesting with the different functions the kit needs to fill for different situations. Not a "this brand, this model" but a "you need a shovel for winter camping if..." This would be helpful for people to get out regardless of budget.
I'm coming up for the big Hawaii 5-0 shortly and have taken up fast shuffling very recently. My 5k times are nowhere near yours Al (almost double!!!) but I did a couch to 5k plan and enjoyed it. It usually takes me a while to get the dodgy knee and ankle warmed into it but once i'm off then it's all good! All my previous running was restricted to rugby which was short bursts of pace mixed with upper body exercise, so trying to actually run for a solid period of time is a very alien thing to me :)
Very inspiring video. Youre right, we all need more exercise, and although i cant run because of a bad leg, i will try and use the rebounder more, because a sedentary lifestyle is reallt unhealthy, and the hills and mountains really enrich the soul. Thank you for your words.
Great video. Would definitely be interested in some kit review videos. I'm in the market for some gloves/mittens and I noticed you're sporting some rab ones so that would be a good review. Perfect time of the year for it. Thanks for the video. Sets us up for the week!
You are out in so many different scenarios, I think kit specific videos would be great. What I'd like to know is what kit you would put together for a long distance hike.
I'm all but set for my first camp, apart from i stupidly bought a 3 quater mat lol. But a.question for the pros, is there a way to turn a 2/3 season tent into a 4 season tent, please bear in mind im 99% sure my old vango tent is discontinued
Would be great to see what gear you have for different hikes ….. would be great to see you on a 3day 2 night hike and what you would use on that trip ….. shame no blue this week great vlog
Now then Allan, another great video. Loving the positivity, exercise is indeed good for us all. The countryside where you were looks very similar to where I live, but then I live in Yorkshire too, near the North Yorkshire Moors. Speaking of that...have you ever been to Marske-by-the-Sea? My brother said that he saw someone who looked just like you in the Zetland Pub a few months back, with a dog that looked like Blue!
@@BUSHMANandBLUE I spoke to my brother and he told me that it wasn't recently, but nearly a year ago last Christmastime, when he visited me, so he probably did see you. He said that he patted the dog and spoke to you (if it was you). Last time you visited Marske, where you visiting a relative? My brother said that the man that he spoke to was visting a relative of theirs. Near, far, wherever you are.... 🤣
Another great video! You are absolutely right about getting out. You are passionate about it - same as me - so you want to talk about it because you truly believe the positive outcome. Very good, keep talking about it. I have many, many questions regarding winter camping. I see myself as an experienced hiker/camper with temperatures around 10-15°C degrees celsius for hiking and/or camping but I struggle to get into winter camping. We go out almost every weekend for a day hike around 15-25km for the last 3 years. We camp around 15 times a year in our trusted tent. The problem that I experience is that I would like to buy gear that will last me for many years. I don’t like spending €400,- to start with winter camping and then have the gear laying around for the rest of my life. I would like to spend some good money now but make it last. My sleeping pad will be the Thermarest Xtherm Large and my girlfriend bought the Rab Hotsocks and Mitts for me while we were watching your videos, same with the Rab Argon down pants. They are laying under the tree for Xmas for me haha! Problems I encounter: - Sleeping bags. I have a Decathlon sleeping bag rated for 15°C which I love for summer camping. With my medium Sea to Summit Reactor I can get this down to 8°C comfortably. But now I struggle which sleeping bag to buy for winter, my interest is going to the Rab Ascent Pro 600. For colder nights I could again combine it with the Reactor, maybe even the Extreme. - Winter down jackets. I find the hard to compare the winter jackets with each other since they have no limit ratings. My interest is going to the Rab Electron Pro. BUTTTT :-), this brings me back to my sleeping bag. If I combine the Rab Argon pants, Electron Jacket, Hotsocks and Mitts, isn’t it enough to combine this all with my Decathlon 15°C sleeping bag with temperatures down to -10°C? Maybe even with boiling water into my Nalgene bottle? - Winter GTX jackets. I love your ‘extreme’ video’s with the winter storm camps and I want to encounter them myself, but when do you need GTX jackets? Obviously in very rainy conditions, but what about winter? All the other gear like winter tents and stuff are clear to me. Next up, I never camped higher then 900m above sea level since I live in the Netherlands, I usually camp in the Ardennen, Belgium or Luxembourgh with my Golden Retriever named Cooper. Next year we will be making some trips and camps in the Kalkalpen, Austria and we are planning to sleep at the Hoher Nock around May or July as our first mountaineering experience. How are the conditions in the mountains in summertime compared to sealevel? And all my questions start over…. We will be visiting the Kalkalpen next year (2024), hike the full Tour du Mt Blanc the year after (2025) and I am now training to climb Mt Blanc in 2026. Personally I would really appreciate a video where you do talk about gear, more in-detail with most circumstances and situations. My apologies for my very long comment but I wanted to give you some insight on my tought process. Maybe something to consider while you are making another gear related video. Thanks a lot for reading this and I’m looking forward to your next video! Great job bud, I hope we, including Cooper and Blue are able to meet up in the next years because Lake District is definitely on my bucket list to plan a vacation! Keep doing what youre doing, and enjoy the outdoors!
The Argon pants are great👌 The Rab Ascent Pro will be spot on. Combine it with your argon pants and a down jacket and that will be suffice for pretty much every night in the UK. Maybe test your old sleeping bag first but the Rab one I promise you’ll love. For dry winter camps any decent shell outer layer will do mainly to protect the down and be windproof but if you’re planning lots of expeditions I’d look at getting a decent shell layer. Mainly you’ll get more idea of kit suitability by getting out there and testing it in safer circumstances before you take in some challenges. Enjoy mate👊
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Thanks a lot for your reply! Great to hear that I was on the right track there. I've just ordered the Rab Ascent Pro 600 including the Rab Electron Pro Jacket! Can't wait to have them arrive. We are heading to Luxembourg tomorrow for a hike at the Mullerthal, definitely a place you should look up. Truly amazing. Have a great weekend 😁
Now then Al. Certainly making the most of the nice weather. Unfortunately by time the weekend comes, it’s either raining or I’m house bound with food poisoning 🙄 For a winter camp in the snow, what would be your top 5 pieces of kit?
I always look forward to new vids, this being no exception. The content, editing and presentation is always top notch. Only downside on this one is that you didn't take Blue - the main reason I subscribe! Joking aside, I hope you enjoy and keep on doing what you are doing for a long time - don't think I'm the only one that gets motivated to get active in the outdoors by your channel 👍
Seriously Allen, you're amazing. A simple camp out yet filled with positivity. I think your last 3 films have featured idiot people. It's a disgrace, what is wrong with these people?🤷♂️ Top film as per usual. The 🐐 ❤,no 🐶 😥.
Great little video… God I could spend a fortune on Fjällräven stuff if I won the lottery 😂 I got a pair of those boots you were wearing - they are bloody brilliant! 🙂
Coming from Australia I never realised El Niño in the Pacific Ocean affected you north in the Atlantic, not always welcome here causes so much havoc some years.
Fjallraven Singi anorak. It’s just a single layer but great windproof top layer. I bought that cheap 2nd hand. Generally get a size smaller than normal👍
I would be interested in which base layers you use. I switch between Rab Syncrino, Icebreaker Oasis 200 and Helly Hansen LIFA Merino - depending on how cold it is.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE I think you should. Nobody is even thinking about it. Would be cool for you to do a collections on videos with at least ONE oldschool item. I don't mean hiking up with a 5kg canvas tent. But you and blue with a cosy setup ❤️
Hey Al, always enjoy your videos. I personally would love to see some gear review videos as well, by now we trust you even if your not reviewing in the field. Also, what size Backpack did you use for this trip? 45 L? - thank you!
Is that "real" fur collar on your jacket? 3:47; noticed your PHD sleeping bag & PHD jacket so I KNOW you'll be comfy warm tonight. Which model? Hand made rabbit skin handwarmers-excellent gear that you can also slip into the handwarmer pockets of your PHD jacket. Please, just stick to telling us about the gear you have with you on each trip. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.
No it’s a fake fur collar that’s detachable. It’s the Minim 400 k sleeping bag. Ultralight for a -4 working temperature, no zip but once you’re in you’re warm.
Beer is only negative escapism if it becomes a dependency problem. Anything in moderation. If you drink it, feel looser, stay in a good mood and have a laugh. It's all positive baby! Oh yeah. 😎
Your 100 % about exercise, a lot of people wouldnt understand it. Great video.
Yes it’s only a benefit in life and we all need to find more time to do it.
I definitely prefer your current method of showing the kit as you use it. Keep up the quality content.
Yes I might do a more affordable set up👍
Showing the kit in action is the best way and I like the way you focused in on the tent logo, the viewer can gather the information they may want this way, but the enjoyment of the video and great outdoors isn't spoilt.
Great content as always, enjoyed watching that chilled out simple one for a change!
Regarding content, I know this may not really be applicable to you as you have blue who seems to be made for camp life. Dog sleeping mat and blanket for my RR is essential 🙄😂

Sometimes it's good just to get out somewhere local and have a nice simple camp😊as always Al...great video 👍
Great stuff Al! Keeping it simple.. Yes! What more do we need?
Don't apologise for thinking you might have come across as 'a bit preachy' ..You didn't. Wise words. Without going into my life story, I maybe 'enjoyed' my younger days a little too much. Bits of kit by scenario works for me!
What a shame, no blue. I still watched it. Scenery lovely, but there is no way i could do that.

The Argon pants are great👌
The Rab Ascent Pro will be spot on.
Good stuff again AL 👍🏕️
Now then Al. Certainly making the most of the nice weather. Unfortunately by time the weekend comes, it’s either raining or I’m house bound with food poisoning 🙄
For a winter camp in the snow, what would be your top 5 pieces of kit?
Can not find the jacket online you got a link to where I could buy one
I always look forward to new vids, this being no exception. The content, editing and presentation is always top notch.
Only downside on this one is that you didn't take Blue - the main reason I subscribe!
Joking aside, I hope you enjoy and keep on doing what you are doing for a long time - don't think I'm the only one that gets motivated to get active in the outdoors by your channel 👍
Thanks Trev. I aim to motivate others😬👍👍👍
Such a nice camp. Lately I’ve been more into hotel rooms but this looked cozy. I hope blue is doing well.
😂 I don’t mind the odd hotel room too
Me, myself and I ! 😂 I can't stop myself from laughing! 🤣🤪😜🤣🤪😜🤣🤪
It made it less lonely 😂
@@BUSHMANandBLUE 🤣🤣👍🤣🤣
What chair are you using Al?
Always love seeing your videos - so inspiring! Come to California & hike our sierras - but lots more wildlife here than the occasional sheep.
I’d love to👌
lovely video x
Please make some videos on kit for different situations. This would be a GREAT help.
👌
were did you get those pies from? they look so good
That’s a good idea
Use a balaclava to keep.your noise warm
Seriously Allen, you're amazing. A simple camp out yet filled with positivity. I think your last 3 films have featured idiot people. It's a disgrace, what is wrong with these people?🤷♂️ Top film as per usual. The 🐐 ❤,no 🐶 😥.
Thanks Mal. Always positive 👍
Near Brimham? No Bluey, d'oh!!!!!???
I would love gear videos a lot buddy! 🤗
Great little video… God I could spend a fortune on Fjällräven stuff if I won the lottery 😂
I got a pair of those boots you were wearing - they are bloody brilliant! 🙂
Yes I do love the fjallraven gear. I wear it all day to day too👍
Coming from Australia I never realised El Niño in the Pacific Ocean affected you north in the Atlantic, not always welcome here causes so much havoc some years.
Sorry if I missed it but what make is your jacket?
Fjallraven Singi anorak. It’s just a single layer but great windproof top layer. I bought that cheap 2nd hand. Generally get a size smaller than normal👍
I would like some videos about kit in different situations!👍
👍👍👍
I would be interested in which base layers you use. I switch between Rab Syncrino, Icebreaker Oasis 200 and Helly Hansen LIFA Merino - depending on how cold it is.
All too fancy for me. I just use Nike or under armour leggings. I’d like some merino wool👌
Yes please...... Specialised kit videos for differing camps is a deffo. ATB
👍
A external framed pack would have looked great AL, go full hardcore 80s look ❤❤
I might get my dads old one out😂
@@BUSHMANandBLUE I think you should. Nobody is even thinking about it. Would be cool for you to do a collections on videos with at least ONE oldschool item.
I don't mean hiking up with a 5kg canvas tent. But you and blue with a cosy setup ❤️
Enjoyed this video Lad 👍
👍
Eye covers with an insulated nose shield all-in-one!
👌yep
I would like to see some kit reviews/ comparisons by use , ie tents , mats, sleeping bags , stoves etc
👍👍👍
Hey Al, always enjoy your videos. I personally would love to see some gear review videos as well, by now we trust you even if your not reviewing in the field. Also, what size Backpack did you use for this trip? 45 L? - thank you!
Nice one Al’ I am expecting a video for search and rescue on the missing drone, ☹ or is it written off? ATB
I will go back to have another look even though it will be knackered now
Nice one Al great little camp.
Quick question I have the thermerest xlight is that pad you used more comfortable ?
Cheers Graham
No it’s not as comfy. I think the Xlite is thicker👍
Cheers to 50k subs
Thanks 👊
Please do the favorite kit, videos. enjoyed this
👍
Wot??? No Blue!!!!!!
Loving working my way through all the videos. What do you use to prop up your sleep mat? That looks so comfy
It’s a chair that I lay on its back. Made by Alite but not made anymore anymore.
@BUSHMANandBLUE thanks for getting back to me dude.
Love watching your videos.but were is our beautiful blue .?
The star was absent 😂
❤❤❤❤
Oh No! 😫😫😫
NO Wonder Mutt !!!!!😂😂😂😂
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Most anything made by PHD Designs is BOSS, the cat's meow, Best of the Best.
Just read The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter. Thought people watching this video would enjoy it.
Interesting thanks.
I know that place.. I can see it from where I work😅.. aye
Beer is only negative escapism if it becomes a dependency problem. Anything in moderation. If you drink it, feel looser, stay in a good mood and have a laugh. It's all positive baby! Oh yeah. 😎
Yeah you’re right with that👍👍👍
I meant......"I don't put crap in my body",.... for the first time in 75 years. (Ha-ha)
The food of kings.
